Feb 19 2009, 19:06 di cruz992If I was smart, I would've been a soul music aficionado. My teenage years would've been so different: tailored clothes; coordination on the dancefloor; clove cigarettes; maybe a cool ivy cap (my head's too big to pull off a porkpie hat). But nerd that I am, I decided to devote my devotion to power pop.
For many grooveless years in the 80's-90's, Big Heat's one and only release "Watch Me Catch Fire" was one of the few soul records in my collection. Big Heat were a retro r & b group from mid 1980's England. The nerd connection was this: they were a quasi-supergroup that included Bill Hurley (The Inmates) and Drew Barfield (The Keys) on vocals, Chris Parks (Any Trouble) on guitar, and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions) on drums, among others. An 80's power pop/pub rock nerd's wet dream...
This band had the goods, though. The songs on the 12" single were gritty soul doppelgangers echoing out of dark London alleyways…

So, what you likely don't know about me is that although I spent the first 27 years of my life as a Midwesterner, the last seven have proven to me (without a shadow of a doubt) that I was really a Carolina girl from the beginning.
Around here, there are "shag" clubs and thousands of people from five to 60 who love to dance to that good old "beach music," and who remember fondly summers spent at Myrtle Beach and the old Pavilion.
These are the songs we all dance to and know word for word. These are our summers spent burning our feet in the sand and running into the surf.
