As autumn is upon us, and we finish September and head into October, 'tis the witching season for me: my personal peak season for the heaviest of metal! All this week, I'll be highlighting a few of the most defining tracks from black metal, and more recent offshoots of pagan metal and viking metal!
Today's selection shifts to the early 90s and Norway, the peak period and ground zero of the second and most-infamous wave of black metal. I don't profess to be as knowledgable as devoted black metal fans (and they are devoted), but the solo project of Varg Vikernes (a/k/a Count Grishnackh) is, I believe, one of the most critical (and infamous*) influences in all of black metal.
The name "Burzum" itself is derived from the "Black Speech of Mordor" that was invented by J.R.R. Tolkein: "burz" meaning "dark" and "um" being a suffixed "the" - thus, "the dark" or literally, "darkness."
