Vale, Amy. It was not unexpected, but sad nonetheless. On another note, there are no words for how envious I am of my international friends who can listen to Pandora and Spotify. Love, a jealous Australian.

He was so much more than The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. It's a huge loss.

We must be looking at different charts! Aretha at #1 and Winehouse at 4.

I didn't write that out very clearly... I know it's a cover. ;-D And what a gracious performer Otis was! I recall him mentioning at Monterey pop Festival (which I watched recently) something about Franklin's version having topped his but that he liked to continue singing it anyway. I was wondering if I could think of a better cover song (of anything) than Aretha's version of Respect. wow I didn;t know Watchtower was on Battlestar Gallactica...

So I'm listening to Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" album, which begins with Respect, and I'm trying to think of a remake of any song that I consider to be better than this is. The only one I can think of, offhand, that even comes close (and it's not a soul song) is Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower.

And you're right about Sam Cooke not being Southern Soul too! ;-D

Yeah I think you got it right when you said the sound is often perceived as being dated - that's how it seems to me. And that's even with my favorites... Anita Baker - definitely will check out, Teena Marie too... I've actually listened to a fair amount of Badu but it's been awhile... I'll give it another go!

What I mean is, who are your favorite artists of the 80s and 90s? I've been trying (off 'n' on) to put together a favorite albums by year list - the kind everyone's tired of seeing - but I get bogged down in the 80s and barely gain momentum in the 90s. There are albums I like, certainly, but when I compare them to the choices of the other decades they (with an exceptoion or two) just don't measure up. So, I'm hoping that there was music made in those years that I will, basically, like as much as I do in the other decades and that I just haven;t found it yet.

EDIT: I'll amend that to "soul and related sounds" - I'm not being a purist here.
