Rafael Nadal US Open Champion. Completes the career Grand Slam - only the 7th man to achieve that - and all at the age of only 24. Amazing. And well worth me staying up past 3am for :o)

Rafa has just won his first round match at the Australian Open - he beat Aussie world number 78 Peter Luczak 7-6 (7-0) 6-1 6-4 in around 2 and a half hours. Luczak was 5-3 up in the first set, but Rafa fought back to take him to a tie-break which he won easily. Credit should be given to Luczak who played very well, but Rafa proved just too good for him.

Rafa will not be defending his Wimbledon title due to tendonitis in his knees. He announced his decision to pull out last night, calling it one of the toughest decisions he has ever had to make in his career. As disappointing as it is, I would rather see him take the time to get fully fit for the US hardcourt season, than have him play at Wimbledon and make the problem worse.

Rafa lost in the fourth round to Robin Soderling 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 6-7 (2-7). It is the first time that the 4-time defending champion has ever lost a match at Roland Garros, having previously won a record 31 consecutive matches. Rafa simply could not find his best level against Soderling who played probably the best match of his career. Rafa will now have a week at home in which to celebrate his birthday (Wednesday June 3rd) and prepare for the switch to grass courts.

Rafa is now through to the fourth round of the French Open after thrashing Australian Lleyton Hewitt 6-1 6-3 6-1. Rafa's performance was considerably improved compared to the first two rounds and as hard as Hewitt tried, he was made to look ordinary by the world #1.

Rafa has just beaten Temuiraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-1 6-4 6-2 in his second round match. It took over two hours and was raining lightly by the end, but the umpire was happy that the rain was not heavy enough to cause problems for the players. Once again, Rafa was not quite at his best, but he is working his way into form as he progresses through the tournament.

Rafa beat Brazilian qualifier Marcos Daniel in straight sets, 7-5 6-4 6-3 in his first round match. He didn't play brilliantly to start with, but seemed to find his rhythm in the second set after having his serve broken - almost like that prompted him to step up a gear. Daniel gave a good account of himself, he didn't appear scared of Nadal at all like some players can be and he gave Rafa a good contest but ultimately the world #1 was just too good for him. A solid start to the tournament from Rafa. The match lasted almost 2 and a quarter hours.

Rafa is set to play his 1st round match at the French Open tomorrow (weather permitting obviously). Fingers crossed I should be able to watch that on TV and put a full report in here.

Rafa has regained the Rome Masters title after he beat Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 in yesterday's final. Rafa has now gone 30 matches unbeaten on clay courts since his defeat last year in Rome when he was affected by foot blisters. As a result of his defeat, Djokovic is set to lose his world #3 ranking to Andy Murray next week.

Rafa is through to the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo after beating Nicolas Lapentti 6-3 6-0 in a match that was started yesterday, but suspended due to rain. As a result Rafa is one of several players who will have to play two matches in one day with the quarter-finals scheduled for later today.
