  • Another Holmes Brother is gone- Bye, bye Wendell Holmes

    Giu 23 2015, 7:48 di Bluesman24

I´m honoured that I have seen these Guys live in a small intimate Frame in November 2013 and had the Chance to talk to them as well.( You may have a look at my Blog back then).

The Following is taken from Alligator Records:

Alligator Records News, Blues & More
    WENDELL HOLMES, DECEMBER 19, 1943 - JUNE 19, 2015

Wendell Holmes, vocalist, guitarist, pianist and songwriter of the critically acclaimed soul/blues band The Holmes Brothers, died on Friday, June 19 at his home in Rosedale, Maryland of complications due to pulmonary hypertension. Earlier this week, Wendell addressed his fans and friends in an open letter as he moved into hospice care. He was 71.

Wendell retired from touring earlier this year when he was first diagnosed. Holmes Brothers drummer Willie "Popsy" Dixon died on January 9, 2015 of complications from cancer. Brother and bassist Sherman Holmes continues to carry on The Holmes Brothers legacy with The Sherman Holmes Project featuring Brooks Long and Eric Kennedy.

Wendell, the man Entertainment Weekly has called "a timeless original," was born in Christchurch, Virginia on December 19, 1943. He and his older brother Sherman were raised by their schoolteacher parents, who nurtured the boys’ early interest in music. As youngsters they listened to traditional Baptist hymns, anthems and spirituals as well as blues music by Jimmy Reed, Junior Parker and B.B. King. According to Wendell, “It was a small town, and my brother and I were about the only ones who could play anything. So we played around in all the area churches on Sundays.” The night before, though, they would play blues, soul, country and rock at their cousin’s local club, Herman Wate’s Juke Joint. “When he couldn’t get any good groups to come from Norfolk or Richmond, he’d call us in,” Wendell recalls. “That’s how we honed our sound. We used to say we’d rock ‘em on Saturday and save ‘em on Sunday.”

Once Wendell finished high school he joined Sherman, who had already begun playing professionally in New York. The two brothers played in a few bands before forming The Sevilles in 1963. The group lasted only three years, but they often backed up touring artists like The Impressions, John Lee Hooker and Jerry Butler, gaining a wealth of experience. Sherman and Wendell met drummer Popsy Dixon, a fellow Virginian, at a New York gig in 1967. Dixon sat in with the brothers and sang two songs. “After that second song,” recalls Wendell, “Popsy was a brother.” They continued to play in a variety of Top 40 bar bands until 1979, when the three officially joined forces and formed The Holmes Brothers band.

The band toured the world, releasing 12 albums starting with 1990's In The Spirit on Rounder. Their most recent release is 2014's Brotherhood on Alligator. The New York Times calls The Holmes Brothers "deeply soulful, uplifting and timeless."

In September 2014, The Holmes Brothers were honored with a National Endowment For The Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor the United States bestows upon its folk and traditional artists. They won two Blues Music Awards including Blues Band Of The Year in 2005. The Holmes Brothers are featured on the cover of the current issue of Living Blues magazine.

Wendell is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Felicia and Mia, brothers Sherman and Milton, and three grandsons.

Memorial service arrangements have not yet been announced.

  • Running on Empty

    Giu 8 2015, 11:44 di Bluesman24

Sa., 6. Jun. – Jackson Browne

What a Week! Monday Knopfler and last Saturday Jackson Browne. Row 3, about three, four Meters from Jackson Browne and his great Band, what a Difference an intimate Location makes!

I listen to his Music since more than three Decades and o.k. some of his Recordings could have had more Uptempo for my Taste- he is definitely a Live Musician and a Storyteller.

His Voice is the same than ever and he looked fit and youthful, too. And he has something to say and he takes a Stand- still.

He came a long Way from Running on Empty 1977, which was my first LP from him and I guess, he has a Long Way to go, still- like Forest Gump, couldn't be a better Song for backgrounding the Run from Forrest troughout America.

    Cheers, Markus

  • An Evening with the Sultan of Swing

    Giu 2 2015, 7:46 di Bluesman24

Mo., 1. Jun. – Mark Knopfler

Yesterday he came to Town, one of the Best and probably most relaxed Guitar Player of our Time- Mark Knopfler. Sold out Venue about 9.500 People. Everything was prepared for a great Night out.

Mark and his seven headed Band played themselves down through a great Setlist from Dire Straits to the new Tracker Songs. Sometimes four Guitars on Stage gave a full bodied Sound as well as the many celtic- sounding Instruments played by the Multi- Instrumentalists.

I saw him a few Years ago together with Emmylou Harris, this Time for me he had much more Power.
But the big Disadvantage this Evening was: Trough the whole Concert you heard an Echo/Feedback from the original Sound in the Venue, at least there were we have sat. That was frustrating for me.

    What a Setlist:

Fr., 20. Mär. – Southern Rock & Bayou Soul
I t was my First Night Out for a Concert in 2015 and I choose a Double Package with Marc Broussard and J J Grey & Mofro at the Kaufleuten Club in the Heart of Zürich, which was sold out. It was a real Double Concert, which each Band played the same Time.I didn't know Marc Broussard before:

Marc Broussard is an American singer-songwriter. His style is best described as "Bayou Soul," a mix of funk, blues, R&B, rock, and pop, matched with distinct Southern roots. In his career, he has released five studio albums, one live album, three EPs, and has charted twice on Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks. ( from Wikipedia ).

He played a little more than a Hour, backed by Mofro, great Voice and Songs like Gibby's Song, Weight of the World and Home.

After that J J Grey & Mofro entered the Stage, great Performance, hot and sweaty, the Kaufleuten Audience get mad with Songs like:
    Every Minute,
    Everything Is A Song
    Brighter Days
    Country Ghetto
    Everything Good Is Bad
Orange Blossoms and Encore together with Marc Broussard
    Ol' Glory

J J Grey could play longer than 1.15 Hours and I missed his famous Harpblowing, but not bad at all:-)

    Cheers, Markus

  • Joe Bonamassa live in Zürich

    Ott 2 2014, 7:34 di Bluesman24

Mi., 1. Okt. – Bonamassa opens for Bonamassa

Yes, yesterday he made it! Joe Bonamassa came to Zürich, the biggest Indoor Venue in Switzerland, 13.000 People Volume. Yesterday just 3500 got Entrance, I was one of them. Joe wanted a kind of a Club Feeling and he got it.

I had a great Seat, Row six, middle, about five meters away, from the Stage direct in front of me Joe Bonamassa

He played two Sets .One Acoustic, about 60 Minutes- wow, what a Sound and what Musicians, the One and Only Lenny Castro on Percussion, from the Dubliners Gerry O Connor on Banjo and Fiddle, Mats Wester on Nyckelharpa and Derek Sherinian on Piano. Personally, I like this unplugged Thing a lot- great, clear Sound, many different Instruments.

Than 10 Minutes break and the Plugged in Gig started and now he rocked the Stage with Castro, Sherinian and new Carmine Rojas on Bass and Tal Bergman on Drums. Loud and Clear the Sound here, too. Playing Time: 1.40 Hours.

Joe Bonamassa is for sure one of Best Guitar Players of this Time, that is no Secret and he is a sympathetic one too backed from really great Musicians- what a Night in Zürich! Hopefully he come back with Beth Hart!

  • Great Concert from Richard Bargel & Dead Slow Stampede

    Set 19 2014, 14:19 di Bluesman24

Do., 18. Sep. – Richard Bargel & Dead Slow Stampede

  • Jimmie Vaughan & The Tilt-A-Whirl Band/ Tedeschi Trucks Band

    Lug 22 2014, 11:08 di Bluesman24

    Mo., 14. Jul. – Jazzopen Stuttgart 2014

    Hi Folks

I`m back from Germany and it is Time to write a little. The little Amphitheatre at the Mercedes Bent Museum is a tiny and fantastic Location for an intimate Concert. 1000 Seats and sold out:-)

I liked Jimmie Vaughan and his Band a lot as well as the famous Lou Ann Barton. They played a relaxed Gig right into the Sundown. A few more uptempo Numbers could be played, but so I cooled down in a positive Way.

The second main Band was the Tedeschi Trucks Band and the Expectations were high. I have almost every Recording from that Band. The 11 Head Band started brilliant with Songs from their new Album Mad up Mind and I liked their powerful Performance.

In the second Half of the Concert they drifted for my Taste too much in that Freejazz- Improvisation- Endless Jam -Indian Raga- Thing. I have to admit, that I`m not that Kind of Jazzman:-)

They were little too focused on Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, too, in my Opinion, but Taste is different and in the most Printmedia and in the Net they got just the highest, excited and best Critics for that Concert.

Finally, the Opener The Ramblin Puppets were great, here a Link to their Performance: http://www.theramblinpuppets.de/#news

and "Don`t miss me" from Tedeschi Trucks Band:

  • Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters for free!

    Lug 11 2014, 7:29 di Bluesman24

I won two Tickets for the Opening Concert of the Live at the Sunset Concerts in Zürich, which is known as a first Class Open Air, because it is very small and the Location is great. The Weather wasn`t ( 10 °C and Rain ), but we had best Places covered so we were safe at least from Rain.

The Artist, which I was able to see was an "old Fellow", Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin with his new Band " The Sensational Space Shifters". I have seen Robert Plant in the 90`s twice before.

He is 65 Years now, but still a real good Frontman and Singer. He had a great Band and a even better Sound. The Arrangement of the Songs were wild: A Blend from Hardrock, Blues, Worldmusic, Bluegrass and a Shot of Psychodelic, wow!

If you will see, which Song was the Opener, you know in which Way the Journey in that Night went. At the Beginning Robert said, that he played almost everywhere: on Funerals and Weddings, etc. but he played never in Front of 2500 Condoms ( the People in the first 15 Rows did wear all the same Raincoats, which were free to get there:-)

All in all a great Night out, just the Playing Time was too short for me: 1.35 Hours. If I had to pay for the Ticket, that would be really much too short.

    Cheers, Markus
