I think this band is signed to Sony Music Japan. It doen't sound very indie to me.

How many dl's does it take to get in the 75 these days. This group has 500 members (max?) if most of those bought the song (you know who you are if you didn't) then surely that would get it in at 75. Shame.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  • fakesensations

Oh well folks, we did our best! Thanks to everyone who supported our bid: we raised a bit of money for War Child and had some festive fun on the way - and to those who got in something of a lather about this, it was supposed to be a bit of fun ok? :) Happy holidays everyone.

Wow - that's one serious disaster! Surprised that Malcolm Middleton charted so low given the amount of backing it's been given, and I'm also quite surprised that this campaign hasn't even dented the Top 75. Usually with a co-ordinated effort behind it, a track can at least make some impact on the singles chart these days. Shame.

Isn't it a cheesey tradition that the Christmas Number one is as bad and as kitsch as possible? I say someone should re-release Mistletoe and Wine or even Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the west). If one of those quality classics was re-released I would move back to England just to buy it. I say buy the Christmas kitsch, and have a sense of humour about these things. And those videos are getting

I think I might even care if I lived in the UK. or listened to the radio or followed charts. Speaking of... and just as a matter of clarity: Since I don't, would my purchase even count towards the charts? if it does then that does seem like an ideal way to game the system. More power to making the UK charts reflect American taste. (with all due sarcasm)

I fucking hate this stupid video invasion in every single Last.fm page. I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaate it, please take it off.

Does anyone know where LS are in the midweeks? x

  • tintin192

I think it's great that someone's really going for it to get these guys to #1... Last.FM + LS were brave to do it. Now we should support them - doesn't matter whether you like the track or not - it matters that you're passionate about original music and doing something a bit different. Why should we settle for having dull MOR stuff at #1 every xmas. I've just bought a copy of the track - Go LS!!!

just bought it, sounds very good. And any way to beat Simon Cowell at his own game is good :)

I'm all for the last fm xmas single idea. LS are a great band who won a democratic vote to be the last fm sponsored single. Anyone who can get worked up about an email and a notice on the dashboard clearly has too much time on their hands. x

Our targetting went a little haywire here, obviously a bunch of people got an email that they didn't want and wasn't relevant.. Sorry :(

  • blossomtoe

So...LastFM, how does it feel to get it so wrong? Terrible song, dreary band (seriously, I've been in better bands than this and that's not saying much) and as for the spammy emails...words fail me! Still, you'll learn from your mistakes, right?

  • MaxwellEugene

This is an interesting idea, but followthrough was obviously poorly executed. As someone below me said, last.fm is about defining your own musical tastes rather than having them defined for you. A better way to apply the idea of spotlight unsigned musicians would be to put a section for them on the dashboard perhaps. It's a shame that this backfired on them because their intentions were admirable.

I agree with the users below. I thought the point of this site was to allow people to develop their music tastes of their own accord and encourage the individuality that makes the music industry as varied and interesting as it is. We don't want to be fed bands and told to make them number one, we should be doing it of our own accord.

My initial thought was that some spammer was masking their return-path to make it look as though this spam was coming from last.fm. I'm actually quite sad that it *did* come from last.fm - doesn't this email that tells millions of users to buy a single by an artist they've never heard of before just make this site like an indie version of X-Factor?

What kind of favouritism took this band to be so sponsored by lastfm? Why users should take them to the top of (which) chart? There are many ways to do charity, I prefer to choose how to do it and whom to give it.

  • danvanherrmann

please do not send spam mails to my e-mail account to promote this band! We need your help to take Lucky Soul to the top of the charts this Christmas i'm don't need it!

I didn't really need two emails to tell me to buy this. The first one was spammy enough thank you.

i don't want that spam in my inbox .. please shut it off. also i don't want to buy music to get it to the top of some charts (which charts?!) but because i like that music. and this artist is definitely not my style..

  • psuedonympho

This is the first really sad sick thing I have seen on Last.FM How perfect to send this out on hanukka- so world inclusive. it is extremely embarrasing that you have assumed everyone is english and christian. If this isn't topped every religion/lifestyle should get a shot at these charts. if we can effect global radio charts please post so all can enjoy. lets find a place to start shit abo

I agree, this is annoying. I dont want to buy everything just because it has something to do with charity.

Last.fm has how many users, and this is the best they could come up with? It's ok, but there's got to be a hundred other new bands the community could be getting behind.

Cor it's a bit bloody Housemartins isn't it? Isn't forcibly marketing a particular song to be number one exactly as bad as manufacturing a pop artist?

    December 2007

so how much of every 40p goes to warchild? i mean, by 'profits' i guess they mean after marketing and whatever..

Take it to the top of WHICH charts?

    December 2007

I like catchy pop and I love the retro sound of The Pipettes and Camera Obscura, but Lucky Soul just sounds tacky to me...

  • nuclearwombat

Personally, I'm not very fond of this 60's bubble gum pop revival fad in indie music at the moment. I don't find this offensive, but I definitely wouldn't pay for it; sounds pretty generic to me (perfect for the radio I guess).
