Embarque (Collaboration with the itzu jitzu label and Video Glitch)

  • Embarque (Collaboration with the itzu jitzu label and Video Glitch)

Jason of itsu jitsu has agreed to be a part of a collaboration with zilch records.

itsu jitsu is no longer able to continue with the collaboration. It is now a Zilch Records/Video Glitch OST.

If you are here because you are interested in contributing via images, video, audio, samples, beats, vocals, poetry, social media, producing, touring, marketing or just interested in watching or suggesting then announce it on here brothers and sisters. You do not have to be affiliated in any way with either label yet you agree it is alright that you from here on will be connected with both labels due to your association with this project. At this point everything having to do with this project is free. You are joining because you are willing to put your stuff out there and agree that you are willing to let anyone use your work in anyway that they see fit so long as they request permission from you and mention you as the originator of the work being used. If they do not then you the artist can consider it stolen or not. I hereby state that any work completed for this project is up for grabs for anyone providing you properly attribute a Creative Commons licensed work. If you do not attribute any and all works for this project to the original legal creator you will be deemed a virtual thief by a panel organized democratically by all involved in this group. In other words don't take without giving proper credit.

Are you nervous yet? Do I have your attention yet? Essentially everything about this project is free. This project is not for profit.

The title of this working project while it is a working project is Embarque. Please refer to this project in the future as the title 'Embarque' for any subjects and correspondence regarding this project. In other words by no means does the final title of this project need to be 'Embarque'. It is only the temporary name of this project to keep us focused so that we don't have to use terms like 'our project' or 'the project', etc. etc.

Embarque is a Portuguese word meaning shipping. The relation is with the english word embark. Please read any ideas and correspondence between Jason and I prior to the beginning of this project.
It is important that no one is looked at as a leader for this project. It is expected that everyone involved will dig the path out for most of the ideas, discussions, organization and completion of this project.

At this point many things have changed. I recommend you scrolling down to the bottom or last page of the Discussion to see where we are with the project. All communication is being saved for archival purposes.

    1. There will be two album releases for this project. One on Zilch Records and one on Itsu jitsu.

    2. Each album will have a blending of all songs. In other words there will be no gaps between each song. (Unless of course it is an artistic choice to have a pause.)

    3. Each album will be sub-concept albums attributing to the concept of the whole project.

    4. Eventually there will be a visuals on a video for the project. For submissions I will be contacting members of the Video Glitch group on Vimeo and the Video Glitch Group on last.fm. The hope is that this project will become an Audio/Visual collaboration.

    5. The creation and ideas will come from you. This includes any marketing ideas to get the project out there. This includes the process and the completion. Allowing outsiders to follow our process will be a project of interest within itself. (So take notes and submit them. I would like for all aspects of this project to be traceable, so, try to submit everything on this discussion.)

    6. Any contribution will be appreciated and included i.e. audio samples, songs, visuals, videos, spoken word, poetry etc.

    7. Everyone involved will be credited and recognized on all literature presented with the project. Please take the time near the middle and end of the project to make a post on this discussion including everything you contributed.

    8. Submissions-Please submit the highest quality possible for this project. All submissions must be noted on this discussion and can be emailed to springbluemedia@yahoo.com and/or can be listed as a link on this discussion for easy retrieval.

    9. This project will be available for free for anyone. By joining this project you agree to release your songs under the Creative Commons License.
Might I suggest that you check out the labels and groups that may be involved with this project.

In the end we may need dedicated
    Video Editors

    DJ's

    Audio Mixers and Blenders

    Packaging/Graphic Artists

    Audio and Video Conversion Specialists

People that know how to move large files easily via the internet

Well, I sure do hope our labels can collaborate in the future. I am seeing a double album. One that your label features and the other that our label features. In time hopefully. Cause I know we are all very busy people.

    possible collaboration

Hey, I am just going to be dropping some ideas your way about our 'hopeful' record collaboration.

Years ago I was into comic books and I thought of this idea yesterday. You know how in the past there have been company crossovers i.e. DC comics doing a crossover with Marvel. They did an Xmen Teen Titans once.
Anyway, this is my idea. We do some type of super hero theme. Then we actually set it up so that someone from your label collaborates in a piece from someone from our label i.e.
Derek Lotek vs awaycaboose, Zilch Spacecasting Network vs SilverlagE. We could even add in villains.

Just an idea. Something to chew on

    Collab

I also have had people suggest an album on the Egypt subject matter and of course Libya.

Hey Jason! So, I am sitting here thinking about all the people I want to collaborate with and finally I figure if our labels collaborate together then it will knock out some of the collaborations with some other artists considering there are so many friends and collaboration promises that are on both of our labels.
This is my idea. We come up with a concept. Your label features part I of the concept and mine features part II or whatever. From that concept we have everyone submit the music. Then we have two to three people commit to mixing all the songs into one seamless big track, similar to what a dj would do, however, this will be a whole lot more interesting than your normal dj mix. We actually come up with one artist name, a new name that you and I or everyone agrees on (it would probably be a lot easier if you and I come up with that but whatever). Each artist will get their recognition as being a part of the project.
    Does this make sense?
Here is an example of a similar idea. http://www.last.fm/music/Argyle+Park

    Album name = Misguided
    Band name = Argyle Park
This was a collaboration of about 15 or so different artists. The cool thing about this is that we are collaborating between labels which isn't done too often due to legalities.
    Let me know your thoughts.

    Hi,

That's a fantastic idea and one which is perfect for the itsu bitsu (http://itsujitsu.wordpress.com/itsu-bitsu/) section of itsu jitsu.

There's been a lot going on with itsu and I have had to step away from it for a while. You can read about it at the link I've attached.

I'd be more than happy to embark (Side note everybody...This is where I came up with Embarque...Thank you Jason) upon this project with you though.

Because of current commitments it would probably be good for me if Part 1 was on Zilch and Part 2 was on itsu, would that be okay?

Have you had any thoughts on a theme?

    Cheers,

Sorry I haven't gotten back. I love what I have been reading about your label. So far I have been recruiting 'possible' artists for the compilation/collaboration. My guess is that I am as busy as you are as busy as I am, so, I understand that this will most likely be a lengthy process. I have some curious artists that are asking me more about what we are planning. Honestly I haven't shared too much information because I am thinking that we share our ideas in there basic form and let it grow and transform based on artists participation. That way it lessens the stress for us. We just make it clear that this is open for lots of creativity. As long as we present the shell/structure to everyone I believe it will grow with interest and the participation of others.
What I am thinking at this point is that we start a thread or whatever it is called within lastfm to get the discussion going at least. We could even blend it over to facebook somehow.
Are you ready for something like that?

Artist Silverlage Listen. I am way unorganized. Don't sweat it. The way I see it isssss....we set up the discussions and we let the artists work out the form. It will be minimal on our end. Trust me on that. All we have to do is figure out where we want to start the discussion of the project on last.fm. Honestly, I am so busy right now. I don't have the time or energy to devote a lot of time to this. I will keep it simple.

  • I appreciate the interest and PM's so far. We really need to start laying down some concepts. Here is the start of an idea.

"There is an old woman that sees everything in this small island town. She is one you would not expect her to be so close to the pulse of this area of the world."

Please feel free to give us any ideas for concepts. Give us your stream of consciousness.

Sorry if this is maybe a bit dull but perhaps it would pay off to outline a basic idea and keep it simple for this initial collaboration. I know that having a concept which is strongly outlined and easy to work inside would help get more of the people whom I have spoken to interested and it would make my life a whole lot easier as I am about to become very busy out in the real world and won't have time to monitor discussion threads, etc.

We have musicians, writers, videographers, photographers and artists amongst us (even if some of those are the same person/people) so how about we start with something along the lines of:

"Embarque" - an abstract short film and Original Soundtrack.

In terms of a concept, some synonyms for the word "embark" are "commence", "set out" and "plunge into".

So, we start with the video, the theme being: motion/movement (arrived at from commencing, setting out upon and plunging into).

If we can get 10 people who are prepared to submit 2 minutes of video footage then that gives us a 20 minute short film.

When we have all of the footage it would only take 10 musicians to write a 2 minute track in order to score the film.

The writers/poets could submit their writing/poetry to be overlaid on the video footage and packaged with the OST as a pdf booklet.

Photographers/artists could submit their pictures to be overlaid on the video, to be used as artwork for the OST and included with the text in a pdf booklet.

And before you know it...et voila! We have a finished work!

Here then is what I reckon will work:

    1. We go with the idea which I've proposed or fairly quickly hash out a similar, easily graspable, easy to work with concept.
    2. We find enough people to take part to cover the numbers outlined above.
    3. Once we have the participants, four 'group leaders' are nominated.
    4. It is up to the leader of each group to collate and keep an eye on that groups work. The groups are 1. Video, 2. Audio, 3. Text, 4. Artwork.
    5. A file format should be agreed upon for all four media formats. Something like MP4 for video, 320Kbps MP3 for audio, .txt for text and JPEG for artwork.
    6. As the video and audio files will be at most 2 minutes in length, the file sizes won't be huge and will be easy to manage for the group leaders.
    7. We use Dropbox as the means of sharing all parts of the work and an agreed upon folder structure to maintain order and make each group easy to manage for the group leader. For example:

    Photographers/Artists folder hierarchy

    Pictures
    |
    |_Unused Photographs
    ...|_Jasons Unused Photographs
    |
    |_Unused Artwork
    ...|_Jasons Unused Artwork
    |
    |_Used Photographs
    ...|_Used by SilverlagE
    |
    |_Used Artwork
    ...|_Used by SilverlagE

All of the Photographers/Artists dump their work into the relevant folder (Unused Photographs/Unused Artwork), along comes SilverlagE who needs some pictures to overlay on his video. He finds two pictures which he wants to use in "Jasons Unused Photographs" so he moves them from their original folder to the "Used Photographs" - "Used by SilverlagE" folder. Those are then 'used' and can't be used by anyone else. That stops the same images from potentially cropping up here, there and everywhere.

This obviously requires a level of trust on all of our parts and also a level of competence. Both of which we should hopefully have.

    8. Once all of the files have been gathered we nominate three people. One to construct the final video, one to do the OST and one to make up the pdf booklet/artwork.
    9. When the project is finished and ready to release, we help spread the word far and wide by releasing the project on both labels.

That's my suggestion and my apologies if I've come off as sounding like a bit of a hard ass but SilverlagE is absolutely right about this thing needing to be a collaboration to the point where it doesn't need a guiding hand every step of the way. Also like I said, both I and some other people whom I have approached are insanely busy and keeping things simple is definitely the way forward for us.

Obviously I'm happy to further refine/re-outline the concept if there is someone who is willing to come forward with a better/more interesting idea but the rest of it I think makes a great deal of sense.

    Cheers,

    Jason

  • Checking in.

Hello, I am a long time collaborator of Silverlage's. I have been busy, blah blah...
Anyway, I am all in. Have some images to submit as well as music. Where are we at on the theme? Just wondering if there is a narrative. Always helps me to have a story in my head to keep me from just getting too abstract.

I will talk with my friends at Playful Skull, and see who is down. They have been banging out some pretty wild toasted glitch style video lately.

    Looking forward to it all,
    Derek Lotek

  • Everyone. I am trying to re-evaluate the project based on Jason's suggestions. Also, I have a bunch of PM's I need to send out to a bunch of people because at this point (and this is kinda funny) only Derek_Lotek and myself on my label is currently interested and Jason on his label. Everyone else that is interested (and I thank you so much) is not officially on either label. Sorry if you are and I forgot you. In the meantime let me throw this out. Get to know DropBox and start thinking about the needed leader positions. It won't be able to move much further until we get these volunteers.

    1. Video
    2. Audio
    3. Text
    4. Artwork
I mentioned a marketing specialist in the beginning and I still want a volunteer for this. This person will spend time on this project checking in with each leader and getting the word out on the internet. Everything my label does and I think Jason's to a certain extent is an experiment. I know that my label for sure is more focused on the process just as much as the final product (if there really ever is one). I am looking for someone to promote on last.fm, facebook google + anywhere on the internet in a very abstract way, using the work from each of the other artistic groups. If interested ask me more about it. And if you are involved currently please get the word out.
    5. Marketing

  • "We are having this conversation now, so that we will not have to have it in the future."
    Christian
  • Jason from itzu jitzu can not be a part of this project. The project is still moving forward at a snails pace:-] Let me know if you are interested.

  • If you have an interest in becoming a part of this cross genre/art project? then leave us a message...

  • UPDATE!!!

The bottom line for this project.

I would like to see this project expand and cross-over into many types of artistic media.

Keeping the project free to all listeners I would also like to capitalize on so much of the current advantages that we have on the internet/web i.e. social media, blogs, word of mouth and so on.

All the while 'archiving' (for historical reasons) as much as we can as this is an experiment.

The experiment: To popularize this project as much as possible without ever losing artistic integrity. Offering this project as a free project to all will help us keep this integrity.

I would now like to open this thread up to a random stream of consciousness for ideas. I don't care how long this project takes to complete, I just care that it stays alive.

If anyone can tell me a better way to start this stream let me know. At this point I can only think about continuing to use this thread.

  • Creative Commons info.

    Adapted from our FAQ:

How do I properly attribute a Creative Commons licensed work?

All current CC licenses require that you attribute the original author(s). If the copyright holder has not specified any particular way to attribute them, this does not mean that you do not have to give attribution. It simply means that you will have to give attribution to the best of your ability with the information you do have. Generally speaking, this implies five things:

    * If the work itself contains any copyright notices placed there by the copyright holder, you must leave those notices intact, or reproduce them in a way that is reasonable to the medium in which you are re-publishing the work.

    * Cite the author's name, screen name, user identification, etc. It is nice to link that name to the person's profile page, if such a page exists.

    * Cite the work's title or name, if such a thing exists. It is nice to link the name or title directly to the original work.

    * Cite the specific CC license the work is under, and link to the specific CC license, ie. for CC Attribution you would link to http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0.

    * If you are making a derivative work or adaptation, in addition to the above, you need to identify that your work is a derivative work i.e., “This is a Finnish translation of the [original work] by [author].” or “Screenplay based on [original work] by [author].”

In the case where a copyright holder does choose to specify the manner of attribution, in addition to the requirement of leaving intact existing copyright notices, they are only able to require certain things. Namely:

    * They may require that you attribute the work to a certain name, pseudonym or even an organization of some sort.

    * They may require you to associate/provide a certain URL (web address) for the work.

If you are interested to see what an actual license ("legalcode") has to say about attribution, you can use the CC Attribution 3.0 Unported license as an example. Please note that this is only an example, and you should always read the appropriate section of the specific license in question...usually, but perhaps not always, section 4: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode

    I'm in!

My stuff is out there, over 100 hours of it, free to be cut, pasted, snipped, sniffed, batted around, etc., with, of course, attribution.

I don't know where everything is with the project at the moment but I understand there was a need for 2-minute snippets around the subject of movement. I have a 24-minute "perpetuum mobile" piece called Motivation that might suit... it's a left-handed piece in that the bass is doing most of the work and is more dense than the treble, and it gets quirkier as it builds, so a 2-minute snippet from somewhere near the end might be good.

I have another idea for a collaboration, just throwing it out there. I have a 60-minute piece called Winter Haiku. I've wanted to use that as a base for actual spoken haiku (the haiku in the title is the plural)... would need some number of mystical significance, particularly in Japanese culture, somewhere between 48 and 81 I'm thinking, and would divide it into equal segments assigned to different artists. Not all artists would necessarily read an actual haiku (though those that are read should be winter haiku)... some could do a short musical overlay that would be a musical equivalent of a haiku. (My piece is a landscape that will accomodate such overlays well.) The visual artists could each take a segment as well, perhaps in collaboration with the audio artist, perhaps chosen independently to let synchonicity blossom.

Don't wanna hijack the current project or sap any energy, justthought this might be a fertile place for my long-fermenting haiku idea.

  • Moving forward or 'Gearing up to Embarque'

Even though Jason and his label are not able to continue I believe we should move forward with his suggestions. I will lay it out as organized as possible. Now that Tim Doyle is on board that makes about 10 musicians which fills the bill quite nicely. So here goes...

BTW, I am not concerned about doing video first or audio first or what have you.

If we can get 10 people who are prepared to submit 2 minutes of video footage then that gives us a 20 minute short film.

So we need 10 people to do some video footage for us still. I am working on that with my video glitch group on Vimeo.com as I write this. I will also send a message out to the members of the video glitch group here on Last.fm.

As far as musicians I don't see why we couldn't have more but for the purpose of trying to stick to tentative plans...So far we have
    a. Ethnotronic
    b. GeorgeDrucsen
    c. yalphaath
    d. HealeyIsland
    e. silverlage
    f. BruecknerSound
    g. volta1995
    h. LOSTFREEQ
    i. DEREK_LOTEK
    j. musinum

When we have all of the footage it would only take 10 musicians to write a 2 minute track in order to score the film.
    a. (nocturnomotoculto@hotmail.fr) Nocturno Motoculto
    b. (aaron.willman@gmail.com) Aaron Jacob Willman
    c. (info@giorgiomagnanensi.com) Giorgio Magnanensi
    d. (jovialjellyfish@gmail.com ) Jovial Jellyfish
    e. (romanocaro@gmail.com) CAROL^error
    f. (vestry37@sbcglobal.net) Sasha Gransjean
    g. ()
    h. ()

The writers/poets could submit their writing/poetry to be overlaid on the video footage/music and packaged with the OST as a pdf booklet.

Photographers/artists could submit their pictures to be overlaid on the video, to be used as artwork for the OST (Original Sound Track) and included with the text in a pdf booklet.

And before you know it...et voila! We have a finished work!

Here then is what I reckon will work:

    1. We find enough people to take part to cover the numbers outlined above.

    4. A file format should be agreed upon for all four media formats. Something like MP4 for video, 320Kbps MP3 for audio, .txt for text and JPEG for artwork. However, it wouldn't hurt to go for higher quality and then dumb it down for the internet.
    5. As the video and audio files will be at most 2 minutes in length, the file sizes won't be huge and will be easy to manage for the group leaders.
    6. We use Dropbox or 'Sugar Sync' as the means of sharing all parts of the work and an agreed upon folder structure to maintain order and make each group easy to manage for the group leader. I think you get more space with Sugar Sync and not a lot of people use it which means if you use it for this project for the first time then you should have plenty of space.

    B. Used and edited by SilverlagE

    5.Misc Folder-Unused
    A. Used and edited by anyone
    B. Used and edited by SilverlagE

All of the Artists dump their work into the relevant folder i.e. Pictures, Videos etc....along comes anyone, involved in the project, to edit and manipulate and then to drop in the A. 'Used and edited by anyone' folder then along comes SilverlagE who needs some pictures to overlay on his video. He finds two pictures which he wants to use so he moves them from their original folder and/or the 'A.' folder then drops into the 'B.' folder "Used and edited by SilverlagE" folder. Those then can't be used by anyone else. That stops the same images from potentially cropping up here, there and everywhere.

    8. Once all of the files have been gathered we nominate three people...
One to construct the final video,
One to do the OST and
One to make up the pdf booklet/artwork.

    9. When the project is finished and ready to release, we all help spread the word far and wide by using whatever networking process they have at their disposal i.e. chatting with friends, Facebook, Google +, Vimeo, email...you get the picture. We also don't have to wait till the project is completed. We can promote during the process as well.

At this point I will be waiting for some video artists and hopefully poets and stream of consciousness writers to join.
In the coming days/weeks I will get started on setting this all up with, well, Sugar Sync. It just seems like the best idea for now. I just have to make sure we can share folders the same as dropbox. Here is the download if you want to go ahead and check it out... SugarSync ...Looks like you get 5 Gigs free.

(BTW, Tim, I am contacting some poet friends to see if they are interested in your Haiku project. Love that idea and am willing to help with that as a side project for sure. I am all about collaborating and so on so feel free to keep dropping ideas about that as well)

  • I need emails from everyone involved in the project. Please post them here with your username from last.fm and or Vimeo.

  • A few people have asked me to be clearer about the project. This is my attempt to explain the project in a minimal way.

This is a cross collaboration with

    1. Video/VisualArtists, 2. Audio/Musicians, 3. Text/Poets/Story Tellers/Stream of Consciousness, 4. Artwork/Still Images/Photographers

Zilch Records ... http://www.last.fm/label/Zilch+Records ... my online label
    i s c o l l a b o r a t i n g with our group
    Video Glitch ... https://vimeo.com/couchmode/groups/videoglitch/sort:date/47786188

We will be communicating on the Video Glitch Forum ... https://vimeo.com/groups/videoglitch/forum/topic:256723 ...

and Zilch Records Forum ... http://www.last.fm/group/Zilch+Records/forum/242845/_/1015019

We will be dropping our works in many of the same folders via SugarSync ... https://www.sugarsync.com/

Each artist will submit their original work/s in a folder marked video, audio, text, artwork.
Once submitted all will have the opportunity to work/manipulate/edit each others works then to be dropped in and edited folder
I will complete the final audio/visual mix.

This is an original soundtrack that all involved will have the rites to publish, promote via social media, or any other virtual, digital or analogue media forms and formats.

No one is allowed to make any money off of it as the entire work is owned by all those involved.

    Hi !

    For intance :

    - I have no right to judge anyone's value untill I become this one ;

    - added to the fact that, if ever I let to anyone the opportunity to tell to oneself : "ah ! what a good moment ! I will drink a beer", I would go fully against the obviousness of my life, nothing less.

Consequence in simple words : for all collaboration (always possible), I just have to make 101% sure that the [absence of immediate verbal caution on my work, part or full] = [totally impossible]

Asset of this method : each one has her/his full and independent responsability, nothing more nor less.
    And everybody's still happy :)

Conclusion, question : have you got the possibility to increment such option, or is it, let's say, uncomfortable to you ?

    ...

Generally speaking : your great idea to gather horizons is just the ultimate idea, bright in its target, a nightmare to organise.
Well, what I humbly invite you to try, if you're ok, is simply that we effectively come near here, we try to think of the correspondance(s) between apparent possibilities and detailed personal differences between shy artists (or any other "slowening characteristics").

In this way, whatever the following of events (if we indeed make, for first example, the soundtrack, or not ?), anyway therefore, we can go further on something interesting and the first merit (and responsibility) comes back to you naturally.
Indeed fortunately someone had this idea, and maybe I need an adaptation time to have a millimetric idea of the particular pattern you would like to create on the basis of fragments. Since you seem a universal artist, I can understand if you are also on the line of letting come and take precious inspiration from some novelty or speciality of the stuff. Normal. In consequence, maybe a logical way for you to express an answer to my question is to imagine a few possible examples...

If I had to detail quickly this question... I'd say : which sense, which direction, which intention as very core of the future work you intend to concretise ? Which assets and drawbacks did you expect just at this step, the step of now, of the process, and does anything surprise you ?
Maybe, also : approximatively how much time do you have to give to this project, what are your technical (personal and material) possibilities... = experience, ambition (it counts so much, yes), ...
And, maybe a very important point : what do you want to avoid as far as possible concerning the several points and steps of the projects ?

If another similar project exists, even in another domain, it could be useful concrete image...

    Friendly yours

    Greetings

"where are we going? and what are we doing?"

I agree with Bertrand's final questions, but
if maybe yes, it's a complex task to organise; at the same time though
i'm already done with the constant dipping
on surfaces of networking dreams no matter how focused they
are or seem to be (mine included), and I would rather
see the work go out no matter what as I don't find
    "organising" is necessarily a good thing to do;
especially if the work embodies not just labor
    but also a progressive energy.

Moreover, people speaking to each other about this...

-(as creativity has been already coopted in many ways
    by fascisms of various kinds)-

...it could be already a good exercise of attention, which is always
good, at least for me. You all seem already well engaged on some
"political" activities, on last.fm or elsewhere,
so while the "polis" is very large,
it is also caged by the limits of its own availability.

I wouldn't have clear answers to your questions Bertrand,
but I would happily give this a try bringing to it whatever creative/political
energy we wished to share and give, or not... and if so, why?

    Ciao,

    Giorgio
