the best 'worst' singing ever

  • Either The King of Carrot Flowers part II by Neutral Milk Hotel, or The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth, by CYHSY.

  • Why, by Yoko Ono

Ever heard a band called Waltari? Their vocalist has so incredibly awful voice (Or rather: He has a good voice but sings badly) that it's just awesome.

And you know what's funniest? He can sing properly and very well.. If he wants to :)

  • napoleon solo by at the drive-in. you really cant sing that poorly even if you try. it is so off key...but its still a good song.

    I LOOOOOOVVE YOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU JEEEEEEEESUS CHRIIIIIIIIIISSST

hahahaha. that is EXACTLY what i thought of as soon as i saw this thread title. whenever i play that song around other people, there are all sorts of weird looks, but i don't care, Jeff Mangum is awesomeee. ^^

  • The (banned?) user's comment the page before is absolutely right:

Honour to whom honour is due:

    The Shaggs:

    "Philosophy of the World"

ps. evil google shows some ways for (illegal!) prelistening before buying...

    "I'm the transmitter - I give information,
you're the antenna - catch the vibration."
    (Kraftwerk)

  • ps.

Mr. Numminen from Finland is not so far away...

Here's a rather philosophical one - if you understand German (philosophy):

    M.A. Numminen sings Wittgenstein

    ;)

    "I'm the transmitter - I give information,
you're the antenna - catch the vibration."
    (Kraftwerk)

  • dinosaurs

True Love Waits should be added, i believe. one of the 'worst' yorke vocals
Elliott Smith is bad enough, too

    Quod scripsi, scripsi.

    Xiu Xiu - Fast Car
Múm - The Ghosts You Draw on my Back
Neutral Milk Hotel - I will Bury you in time

  • "Entity card." by Inanimate objects do sweat!

  • Nothing beats Jeff Magnum

  • heyheyhey leave jeff alone, hes great, kimya dawson id say she mearly sings its more like receites..

  • PFF jeff..its called lo fi ya know

  • He wasn't insulting Jeff Magnum.
Tom Verlaine's voice is really warbly and kind of weird and I completely love it.
Either that or Eric Paul's crazy falsetto vocals in Arab on Radar would be my choices.

  • I just thought of one: Kim Gordon's vocals on SY's "Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit" have to be some of THE most atonal caterwauling I've ever heard, and yet I love it. In fact, it's my favorite song on Dirty.

I guess I like it because it just taps into that visceral spot in all of us that we all want to express at some point or another but can't because we'd look like lunatics.

  • All of Okay's Huggable Dust album is incredible.
I really love Strugglin' by Tricky.
And of course Ys by Joanna Newsom.

I think my all-time 'weird voice' highlight would be the end of the Bright Eyes album I'm Wide Awake It's Morning. As Road to Joy climaxes, Conor Oberst delivers one of my favourite ways to end an album ever.
"I could have been a famous singer
If I had someone else's voice
    My failure's always sounded better!
Let's fuck it up boys - make some NOISE!"
    God damn yes.

Régine Chassagne singing In The Backseat, going off-tune several times with that frail but at the same time so powerful voice of hers. she tries to reach notes she definitely can't reach, but I absolutely love that song.

either her or... Nico! I'm surprised nobody had mentioned her yet.
