  Somebody wrote an algorithm, and some Last.fmers decided to have a bit of fun with it. I wouldn't take it too seriously. ;) As you say, it's no indication of diverse taste in music, but whether a select few artists dominate one's listening time or not. My AEP was around 4.30 last month, and around 4.10 the next time I checked about five weeks later. Now it's 4.03, and I expect it to fall further because I just received a bunch of CDs by my favourite artist for Xmas. If I'm excommunicated from the group, I promise not to cry about it. :D

  Also, despite my relatively high AEP, I don't think someone looking at my charts is likely to think that my musical tastes are particularly diverse. Folk Metal, Doom Metal, Symphonic Metal, Classic Metal... Sure, there's a smattering of other things in there, especially at the lower end of my chart, but it still reminds me of that scene from The Blues Brothers: "We listen to BOTH kinds of music here: country AND western!"

  3.71, but I don't understand why listening to more artists is more "virtuous" than listening to fewer. What's wrong with everyone just listening to what they like? Is "playing the field" always more virtuous than "committing"? I do tend to listen to a lot of different artists, but I don't really understand how that's better than someone who spends 60% of their time listening to their top band. They probably know that band's music a lot better than I know any of the music that I listen to.
