Venice, CA is a southern california city within Los Angeles. The city is unique in that African-American, Latino-American, and Caucasian cultures all merged together in what was known as the “ghetto by the sea.” Within this wild cultural amalgam, emerged a whole set of West-Coast contributions to the burgeoning psychedelic rock, punk-rock, crossover-thrash, crossover hip-hop, and funk-metal music scenes that derived from bands or artists that either resided in Venice, CA for a period of time or were influenced by its culture.

Some bands that have Venice, CA influence are:

1. Suicidal Tendencies: a notable thrash metal band from Venice and Mar Vista area.

2. Neighborhood Watch: a Venice area punk band.

3. Immature: LA natives, and hip-hop trio, now known as IMx used to perform at Venice Beach for money and notoriety when they were kids.

4. The Doors: Jim Morrison held an apartment in Venice and lived there when he formed the band.

5. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Flea had an apartment and the band would promote in the area and play in and around west la area.

6. Jane's Addiction: Perry Farrell has an apartment in Venice. Porno for Pyros, which Perry Farrell created with Stephen Perkins, also lived and toured around this area. This was the band that Jane's Addiction formed into, after a feud between Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell.

7. Infectious Grooves: This group contains two members from Suicidal Tendencies, Robert Trujillo on guitar and Cyco Miko as lead singer. They also featured a member from Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros, Stephen Perkins, who played bass. Those three live in and around Venice, CA to this day.
