You guys are just taking your charts way too seriously...

My solution for this group: Stop listening to cheesy 70's prog rock with 20 minute mellotron solos.

Synchro - Javascript and Flash are run in the browser to render your web page, the server is not involved.

I don't think you realize just how much load would be created. Normalisr works, but on a smaller scale than the entire last.fm user base, and even then it's sourced from very fuzzy estimates (your play counts are multiplied by an artist's average track length, if i recall correctly).

  • _CaRtZ_

Umm.. just do what I do. Pad up your prog rock and instrumental etc artists by playing them all night or whilst you're out, that way bands like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Explosion In The Sky etc will be on your charts where they belong.

They could implement such functionality for premium users at least. Then they would avoid server overload and make subscription even more rewarding.

  • hailmarduk666

On that note, I've averaged 5:46 per track with over 190,000 scrobbles. Not too shabby :D

  • hailmarduk666

What I'd like is not a total time listening application, or even a total minutes per band chart, I'd just like to know what my average song length is based on my amount of scobbles, scrobbles per day, and base that on the time frame of scrobbling. That way, I can see whether or not I listen to tracks more like Monolithe with 50 minute average track lengths, or a random punk band like NOFX that probably averages 2 minutes per song... Would be interesting I think.

ELP, Yes, and Van Der Graaf Generator should be on the top-10 list !! They made some of the lengthier songs ever!!

  • Synchro!

you guys know what you're talking about, right? a simple addition of minutes on a weekly basis would be far from demanding compared too all the flash streaming and javascript which is going on here. but yea, you're right, it's probably never going to happen. since CBS took over this site nothing really happened featurewise but an unnecessary re-design and mobile apps.

I agree with the guy who posted below me...

  • the_Crowder

I hate to be a downer, but you guys should be aware that this is probably never going to happen (at least not while last.fm is free). It's not even remotely feasible. The servers are unreliable enough as it is, and you're proposing a change that would require them to constantly perform calculations for every user on the site. Normalisr does it, but not with nearly as many users and not in real-time. If you care about the discrepancy, put the normalisr widget on your page and let it update once every few days. That's all you can do.

Kind of annoying to have grindcore artists high in my top charts after 2-3 album listens when progressive rock bands tend to stay quite low due to the generally insane songs length. Actually, very annoying, considering I now mostly listen to bands that compose quite lengthy tracks. Somebody ought to tell last.fm staff what we really need, i.e. a system based on BOTH listening time and number of tracks listened, either separated or united with some kind of mathematical formula that gives people a better idea of what they actually listen to. The current system is outdated and inaccurate and not only because of this issue.

I'm surprised that this group isn't bigger. I've always been slightly annoyed with the misrepresentation my charts get due to track length differences.

@nick_InZoMNiAC you're absolutely right, like other options in last.fm: e.g duration time on which is based charts, it schould be also song counts or song durations. it's just obvious. i wonder why up to now there is no such options in last.fm. both options should be, and better, the third option which mixes somehow song length and song counts with some simple statistical weights.

  • al-ghul

you're right, it will be the best solution I think:)

Just downloaded the longest single track (mp3) in my collection so far, 152.32 by Diatribes et al, whose length is 2h32m32s (i.e. 152 min 32 sec, from which the name of the track). Haven't listened to it yet, though...

    September 2011
  • brazzk

@nick_InZoMNiAC considering the fact that last.fm team didn't introduce many new features in the last few years I wouldn't expect song length tracking at all.

This is needed... I listen to Miles Davis and Fela Kuti as much as Wire and Melt-Banana...

  • nick_InZoMNiAC

Sebsials, you can edit(delete) these tags of the pop song if you want! The official last.fm response to the question is that it is feasible, it might be implemented some time in the feature, but it's by no way in their priority list.

  • SebSilas

Ah so glad that there is a group for this. It is very irritating that I am told I listen to a pop group that I don't like, because some chick left them playing on my Spotify for an hour, when really I listen mainly to jazz, which quite often has tracks 40+ mins. Is there any suggestion that the Last.fm team might get round to implementing some kind of feature to satisfy us?

    August 2011
  • nick_InZoMNiAC

I think we should have both options - rank by track plays and by duration. I hope it's implemented sometime soon, the Normaliser uses Musicbrain or something for track lengths I suppose, which is not accurate because lots of tracks are missing

    August 2011
  • nospr

Because last.fm won't count my 20 minute long song as more than an entire punk album, sometimes I'll divide the track in half and it will count for more listens. Now if only Normalisr was on a track by track basis

  • Phage

Normalisr has two flaws, first it only works out stats for your /current/ top 50 artists so it's starting from potentially very distorted data anyway, it then goes and uses median track lengths for an artist. I really need to get back to work on my solution again sometime. @Teun666: No your right, number of plays is the correct way to rank individual songs. But artists need to be ranked by amount of time listened.

Not to be trollish, but I do like to know what tracks I listen to the most and features like that, maybe it would be good to have a function be able to switch between showing time or showing tracks played. Just proposing ;)

normalisr is not solution - too many mistakes with not counted albums (for groups with same names, for example) and some unrealistic counts for groups with too different length of tracks (for example, funeral doom artists may have tracks of 20+ minutes and 5 minutes too).

tried once for a while but later then i left it for i didn't like that it did not count one fo the bands i listen to (orcivus). and i didn't know it's working with the average lengths of songs so i don't regret not using normalisr now... :)

  • Scantily

Have anybody tried Normalisr? It gives you time-based charts for last.fm. To some extent it's good but I wouldn't say those statistics are better. It's really interesting to see though: http://www.normalisr.com/.

  • Neue_regel_

"Devil Doll - ..The girl who was.. death " --->76 minutes single track. Beat that.

    December 2010
  • Voffe

That "Normalisr" thingie would work if all the songs by an artist were of the same length or even if every album of the artist had the same average length of tracks. But it is not the case. For example: if you only listen to A Passion Play from Jethro Tull, it calculates them by the average length of Jethro Tull tracks, which is probably somewhere near four minutes - even though the tracks on A Passion Play are over 20 minutes long.
