  Having said all that, I'm (unusually) in agreement with most other year end polls about Animal Collective's album as I honestly think they've made some of the most exciting music I've heard over the past few years (and think that MPP is up there with Loveless as a perfect, fully realised blend of experimentation and accessibility).....and of course, if I hadn't read a comment Simon Reynolds made about AC in The Wire back in 2003, I wouldn't have come across them either!

  Obviously we should attempt to 'make our own choices' and take anything in the music press with several pinches of salt (particularly year end polls) but the fact is that magazines like the Wire are incredibly useful at bringing music to our attention that we'd never have come across otherwise and year end lists still act as a reasonably good way of discovering stuff you'd missed (if you don't have the time to trawl through the press and the internet 24 hours a day, all year). If I hadn't read the Wire and Melody Maker in the early 90s I'd never have heard of any of the bands that this group celebrates. The Wire are undoubtedly pretentious but at least that means they don't just post the same end of year lists as everybody else and give a bit of balance by highlighting some of the more interesting artists that don't get mentioned elsewhere.

  I like The Wire. But then again, I'm not opposed to pretentiousness. I was pretty disturbed by the little blurb by Ben Frost in that issue though, where he talks about killing fish with his bare hands and how he's an Ayn Rand fan. Glad I've decided to avoid By the Throat, even though I really liked Theory of Machines. The whole concept behind that album seems uber lame. Wolf sounds! Oooh, scary.

  I finally got round to listening to the King Midas Sound album and it’s ace. I have to admit, I never totally got into the Bug stuff (aside from the comedy value of tracks like ‘Angry’). It’s probably because Dancehall never gelled with me at all (I guess I always associate it with bigoted twats like Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton) but the KMS stuff is an entirely different level.

  Well, apparently, we're becoming a bit of a "listen to my band" spam magnet. In other news, the most significant UKPR-related release of the year is King Midas Sound's Waiting for You. It's Kevin Martin (God, Ice, Techno Animal, The Bug) doing a fusion of dubstep and lovers rock and it's awesome from start to finish. Also, everybody needs to hear the incredible mixtape KMS did for FACT magazine, which features tracks by MBV and A.R.
