Last.fm beta! Please read

  • Last.fm beta! Please read

So it looks like True Current Stats is reaching the end of its usefulness. The Last.fm team has just released Last.fm beta for testing by subscribers and yep, the rumours were true - it supports live chart updating! So when this goes fully live there will be no more point to the True Current Stats tool. As a consequence, I will no longer be bothering to build in new features and support multiple servers like I was hoping to.

The official announcement can be found at http://blog.last.fm/. There is a group devoted to the testing and bug reporting at http://www.last.fm/group/Last.fm%2BBeta. If you're a logged in subscriber, you can check out the new site at http://beta.last.fm.

I actually don't think the overall charts are instantly updating just yet, they seem to take a few hours or something. But from my experience so far, the weekly charts are pretty much instant.

Frustratingly, the other major feature that this new release includes is the "library" feature, which shows every band you've ever listened to and how many plays you've had for every song by that artist...which replaces another tool that I had made (http://lastfmstats.livefrombmore.com/statsbyartist.php)! Oh well...

Thanks everyone for your support in making this tool, and really just for enjoying it - that's why I did it in the first place.

    Cheers

  • Hmmm, just had a thought. Maybe I'll scrap all the processing power used to update the stats, and turn this tool into a devoted server to mark what your milestone tracks (i.e. 10,000th, 15,000th) are? How would everyone feel about that? It's the kind of thing you wouldn't use as regularly as TCS, but something you'd be very thankful for when you forget to take notice of what your 100,000th track was!

(I'd wait until after the beta version went live of course, for those non-subscribers)

(And no, this would not be able to retrospectively find out what your previous milestone tracks were, only ones in the future)

Yeah, milestone tracks would be nice :).

Cheers~ Sorry I wasn't able to help much recently, been really busy off hand to setup a server for TCS myself.

exams are next week, time to go back to studying

    :)
  • Well thank you, it was a great service, which I was using from the very beginning. It was really the most useful last.fm tool ever.

TCS was great work, i'm glad last.fm could incorporate it. you have been a pioneer.
    milestones would be great.

  • I found this thread while investigating why my stats are currently stuck. I echo the sentiments expressed above: TCS is by miles the best last.fm tool. Thank you!

  • What are you planning to do with TCS now that the new site is live? Personally I'd still find use for Current Weekly Stats. I really like watching how they develop during the week. Anyway, I've really enjoyed TCS, this tool has made my Last.fm experience a lot better. Thank you :)

You can do that with the new Last.fm - that's why TCS is now obsolete!

The only use I see for True Current Stats now is tracking who I listened to just for this week. TCS is different from the weekly rolling charts in that its weekly stats exclude last week’s plays and really functions as an evolving weekly snapshot (if I am not mistaken). I still check my page daily, though, and I really appreciate all the hard work OnDistantShores put into developing this wonderful tool. Thank you so much. =)

Also, is there a possibility that the artist milestones list will eventually stop cutting itself off and actually show more than 50 tracks on my TCS page? So many names are missing.

    Hey guys,

what do you think about that: TCS will never die. But some changes would be nice (not only to me, I guess). What about removing the movement columns and displaying the current artist milestone on the right? Instead of listing the artist milestones separateley it were nice to see the milestone tracks there from now on?

    Regards from Germany
