Practise.

  • Practise.

I was wondering, how do you guys approach practise? I need to get some ideas as my practise has started to become boring as of late.

My typical daily routine follows this: 2 hours of technique and scale practise. Then about 1.5 hours on repetoire. Then I'll practise improvisation for about 30 mins.

Any suggestions on how to mix things up a little?

  • I'll go out on a limb and assume that you like to improvise...

...in that case... add 30 minutes of blowin' and take away 30 minutes of rep

    (or play some new things)

do you improvise with play-alongs, other people, or nothing at all?

(maybe you should try to do all 3 of the above)

  • Yeah, improvisation is sweet. I practise all 3 of those methods.
Another 30 mins on improv? I'll give that a shot. But I have heaps of rep I need to learn. I recently joined a Swing Big Band style out fit and the leader slapped me with about 100 pieces to learn :s

  • only takes 4 minutes to listen to a chart... you know what I'm saying?

  • No, not really. I was wondering, could you explain how to do lip trills (man, I must sound like a dumbarse.)
