Who's a better song writer? Bob Dylan or Tom Waits

  • male singer-songwriters goes

    waits
    bob
    Townes van Zandt
    van the man
    Cave

  • It's obvious in this group Tom will win but if you ask the same question in Dylan's group answer will be diffrent ;)

  • Tom for sure!

That's like fighting over who is the stronger super hero, Batman or Superman...

  • Waits - or maybe Dylan!

Tom Waits is more consistent - I'm hard pushed to find tracks I don't like. Dylan is superb at his best but I can give you quite a long list of songs I just don't want to listen to. Both write good lyrics but Dylan probably wins on the count. I favour the two headed dinosaur theory.

  • Tom has aged way better and is still pushing his boundaries and reinventing himself (or at least honing his vision) with every new album. Dylan has released some great material in his time but unfortunately his more recent efforts have failed to grab me plus he's apparently a very hit-or-miss live act these days.

  • If you just read lyrics off a sheet of paper then I would say Dylan. But Waits wins for me because of how he delivers his lyrics.

(PS. Superman everytime, batman is just a regular guy with crap gadgets)

  • Never been a Dylan fan... though I appreciate why people are so my choice is obvious, Waits for teh win!, as the kids say.

  • Superman everytime, batman is just a regular guy with crap gadgets

ha, and that's the exact reason I say Batman rules!!

Kind of a weird question to ask on a Tom Waits Group xD. Of course it's Tom!!

  • Tom Waits 1,144
    Bob Dylan 48

Guess that gives an answer to who I hold in higher esteem.
Dylan has written some of the best songs in history and I think Blonde on Blonde is one of the best albums ever. But who speaks more to me, it's Tom by miles.
Also, Dylan hasn't made a song I really really like since the 60s.

  • Dylan hasn't done anything you like since the sixties? What about "Desire" and "Blood on the Tracks"? They're amongst his best albums. Even in the 80s he did some great tracks. "Blind Willie McTell" is one of his best songs as far as I'm concerned. Maybe you haven't done your homework here buddy.

  • It's got to be Tom. Dylan's getting so dried up he's in danger of being blown away. Tom goes from strength to strength where as Dylan's recent recordings are very poor compared to his early stuff.

  • Bob Waits :D

  • Dylan said tom waits is one of his secret heroes, and tom waits said bob dylan was a very important influence.
I need tom waits stay clear headed, but i need dylan to clear my head.
And i need CCR to rock out!

i also nodist many people mentioning leonard cohen.
I only listen cohen when i'm really drunk, and i think tom writes song about why one would listing to leonard cohen, and Dylan is where they meet.

i like bob's lyrics better because there beyond good, his insides can look in ones soul. Tom's lyrics are more creative and poetry like. but, he is musicly better en more original.
overall, it all depends on your mood and i don't think i could ever choose between them. but, since bob's behind, +1 for bob!

Spillin whiskey and learning song about the one that got away
  • And in reply to the superhero thing, it's got to be Batman.

Superman is just a big pussy with superpowers. As soon as someone gets out the Kryptonite and slaps him around a bit, he starts crying like a big girl.

    you compare bananas with apples

I think Tom is the best entertainer ever, and bob is (was?) the best songwriter.
Besides: Kathleen Brennan is co writing the TW-Songs...
And there are (were) still others to count in like Leonard Cohen...

    the godies
  • Tom Waits!

  • Tom Waits for sure. I like Dylan and all but Tom's lyrics hit me in a way no other can. He knows the mind of a wanderer.

sometimes i think it is tom, sometimes bob..depends on how i feel. both are great.
but at the moment it seems tom waits

  • TOM!

and i'm packing my bags for the misty mountines,
over the hills where the spirits fly...
  • Tom Waits

I love Bob Dylan and Tom references him as someone who had a profound influence on himself as a music writer, but I think Tom is undoubtedly the better songwriter due his superior knowledge and use of harmony. Much more sophisticated than Bob's simple folk chord progressions. Who's the better lyric writer??? That could go on forever, but I'd probably still take Tom.

I love the weird and the simple and the noise.
