• On The Bone Records

Just read Wintermute's news (myspace blog) that their Wizard With Stencils EP release is cancelled. They say the label has collapsed. Is this true? A pity because On The Bone was shaping up to be a really good label.

  • "Collapsed"? Sounds very dramatic. I'd wager the reality is far more mundane. Not that I know anything. I'm just guessing.

Point of order: ain't it meant to be "Fun With Wizard Stencils"?

There are those who frequent this neck of the woods who will know more. Of this I am convinced. Even if they don't want to post stuff public-wise I'm sure they'll message you and tell you the full SP.

    Euphemisms, Audrey, euphemisms ...
  • I expect running a label, promoting gigs and being in a band who are in demand must make life very difficult. And in these times when labels and bands and gigs seem to cost money rather than make it, things must get especially difficult.

It must have been a bit of a blow when This Et Al stopped operations just as their EP came out.

I don't recall any current diy or independent labels releasing sales figures. But the fact that some releases are very occasionally (rarely) described as "sold out" suggests that most are not - and that some/many of the typical 200-1000 that are manufactured do not get sold.

My review of the EP is at:

    http://www.whisperinandhollerin.com/reviews/review.asp?id=5633

I note the release date on that is June 16 2008

I would guess that it is very hard to shift copies for money, however good the music is, and that sales pick up when some other factors enter the fray. People do seem to like the idea that they are buying into rising stock, getting in early to artists who are expected to be much more widely known later on.

  • Realising how little I know about the tedious complexities of trying to earn money from CD releases I just did a bit of Googling and found a site that seems to have a lot of well-researched material.

    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep07/articles/recordlabel.htm

Is the address for one of their articles. There are plenty more. The first one I bumped into (from 2002) featured interview material with David Gedge of Wedding Present and Cinerama - which gave it a nice West Yorkshire angle.

Generating 200 CDs to sell/give away at gigs is one thing. Setting things up so that publishing and performance rights are collected and that copyright is protected for the long term looks very much more demanding.

  • I think "hiatus" might be a better term for On The Bone. It might do something in the future. But it might not.

James is just dead busy with Pulled Apart By Horses and he already takes on too much.

  • i run a label and i'm a millionaire.

I'd like to sign a band like the libertines, if any bands are interested please email; sminglacken@thesimonglackenexperience.com

    Contract waiting.

  • Seriously...

in positive news, wintermute are releasing their debut album with awesome label Big Scary Monsters!

    Go the mutes! x
