The "Inspiring Lyrics" thread......

  • The "Inspiring Lyrics" thread......

Lets have some fun with this.... *everyone* out there has some favorite lyrics.

For whatever reason.....trivial, meaningful, fun or otherwise....lets post some lyrics...it might be another fun way to discover some great bands and artists..

So - this is fairly trivial - but I particularly love the song Goin' Back. The Byrds and Dusty Springfield recorded versions...but my favorite is by The Icicle Works (anyone remember them?). A little known track tucked away on a B-Side somewhere.. So sadly cant share it on LastFM - if you find it though...its worth listening to this version..

A good philosophy on life - here is is:

    Goin' Back

Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin

    I think I'm goin' back
To the things I learned so well in my youth
    I think I'm returning to
Those days when I was young enough to know the truth
    Now there are no games
    To only pass the time
    No more electric trains
    No more trees to climb
But thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can play the game of life to win

    I can recall a time
When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend
    Now I think I've got
A lot more than just my toys to lend
    Now there's more to do
    Than watch my sailboat glide
    But every day can be
    A magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

La la la la la, etc.
    Now there's more to do
    Than watch my sailboat glide
    But every day can be
    A magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

    La la la la, etc.

Skiesrblue - "catch me if you can.....i'm goin' back"

Saga - Worlds Apart (Chapter 16)

Saga (Yeah I know, biased...) In their song that ends their The Chapters tell of an offer that aliens make to humankind... and the closing chorus rather sums up what I feel we should be doing...

Why do we do what we do now & what can we do?
That is part of the search between heaven and earth
Why do we do what we do now & what should we do?
We have come to the end, let's start over again

Why do we do what we do now & what will we do?
Would you like a new start?..........
    World's apart

DepotGhost - I wish we could start over.... ;-))

  • My Back Pages

Well, for me, it's got to be Mr Bob Dylan every time. This is one of his best ... and so true ...

    My Back Pages

Crimson flames tied through my ears
    Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
    Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
    Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

    Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate," I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
    Romantic facts of musketeers
    Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

Girls' faces formed the forward path
    From phony jealousy
    To memorizing politics
    Of ancient history
    Flung down by corpse evangelists
    Unthought of, though, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

    A self-ordained professor's tongue
    Too serious to fool
    Spouted out that liberty
    Is just equality in school
    "Equality," I spoke the word
    As if a wedding vow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
    Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
    Too noble to neglect
    Deceived me into thinking
    I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
    Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

    Accentuate The Positive

Come on you guys - aren't you getting a little too serious - I have lots of reminiscent pieces in my pages but, on opening up this particular discussion, immediately thought of an early song that has stayed with me through the years. It was obviously very impressionable on me in the post war period when I was growing up, listening to lots of swing, big band music, jazz and vocalists.... always there for me to listen to on AFN (American Forces Network)! This is it:

    Artist:Perry Como
    Album:Saturday Night With Mr. C.
    Title:Accentuate The Positive

    ( ac-cent-thu-ate the positive,
    E-lim-inate the negative,
Ac-cent-thu-ate the positive, an' latch on! )

    You gotta accent-thu-ate the positive,
    E-lim-inate the negative,
    An' latch on
    To the affirmative
    Don't mess with mister in-between!

You gotta spread joy up to the maximum,
Bring gloom down to the minimum,
An' have faith ( amen! )
    Or pandemonium's
Liable to walk upon the scene!

    To illustrate
    My last remark
    Jonah in the whale!
    Noah in the arc!
An' what did they do ( what did they do? )
Just when everything looked so dark?

( what did they, what did they, what did they do? )

    Man! they said
    You better accent-thu-ate the positive,
    E-lim-inate the negative,
    An' latch on
    To the affirmative
    Don't mess with mister in-between!
No, don't mess with mister in-between!

    ( to illustrate
    His last remark
    Jonah in the whale!
    Noah in the arc! )
    An' what did they do
    ( what did they do?
Just when everything looked so dark?
What did they do, what did they do? )

    Man! they said
    You better accent-thu-ate the positive,
    E-lim-inate the negative,
    An' latch on
    To the affirmative
    Don't mess with mister in-between!
No, don't mess with mister in-between!
No, don't you mess with mister in-between!
No, don't mess with mister in-between!

How many of you out there remember this one? I found it on Last.fm a short while ago if you care to listen - Accentuate the Postive (Remastered) Perry Como

Of today it's in my playlist.

The last song that 10cc ever recorded was called "Ready to Go Home"

On the street below these walls
    Where I used to walk
    Now I can barely crawl
    All this darkness rising tall
Lord shine a light for me

    I'm waiting to be called
    I'm ready to go home
    I'm ready to receive
    Forgiveness for my sins
    I'm ready to begin

Take this river to the sea
    Where the Delta flows
The tide is washing over me
Guide this soul to Heaven's door
    Show me where tomorrow lies
    I'm waiting to be born

    I'm ready to lay down
    I'm ready now to sleep
    A promise I must keep
    I'm ready to go home

    So tired I lay down
    With these memories
Breathe shallow deep inside of me
If time has run its course with me

    Then
    I'm ready to go home
    I'm ready to receive
    Forgiveness for my sins
    I'm ready to begin

    When the evening shadows fall
    When the time has come
    I'll let defences fall
    To surrender's to survive
    I will give up everything
    To those I leave behind

    I'm ready to go home
    I'm ready to receive
    Forgiveness for my sins
    I'm ready to begin

    I'm ready to lay down
    I'm ready now to sleep
    A promise I must keep
    I'm ready to go home
    Again

  • Marillion - Wrapped Up In Time

Particularly love this one from Marillion - in fact recommend a listen to the music as the melody line when the singer comes in is a killer.....methinks anyway :)

Things come wrapped up in time
Like the past in a present
Or the perfect line in a song

    They take their time
    And when they're gone
They take their time with them

And you can't have them back
Because the time for them has gone
And their time has gone with them

The time for them has gone.

    There's an echo of them
An echo of the time they were wrapped in
Sweet or bitter in the memory
But an echo is all, all I can reach now

    An echo of you
    An echo of you
An echo of you in your time

    Still echoing
Like a star in the sky
Like a star in the sky above me

And the story of it's life
Told backwards down this rod of light
    But at it's beginning..
    Long extinct.

  • OOooh.

Yes, skiesrblue, Wrapped Up In Time is one of the prettiest songs on HiTR. So relaxing.

This thread is a danger to me. I am very much a lyrics person, and will glomp onto styles I wouldn't otherwise touch if I like the lyrics. But, among my favorites are:

"Do you see the sun- it's a brand new day
Oh, the world's in your hands, now use it.
What's past is past, don't turn around
Brush away the cobwebs of freedom..."
-Phil Collins, Dance Into The Light

    "The dawn was breaking
    A new day was rising
    Shadows creepin' over the fields
    He watched the pink light
    Steal across the horizon
    He realized
    He saw with new eyes

These chains are all your own
    These chains are comfortable
    This cage was never locked
Born free but scared to be..."
    -Marillion, These Chains

    "Lie down in the flowers
In the blue of the air
    Open your eyes
Why use up your life for anything else?
No need to fight for what everyone has
    What do you need?
    It's already there
    It's already there

    You could love..."
-Marillion, A Few Words For The Dead

"Oh Mummy, Daddy, will you sit a while with me -
Oh Mummy, Daddy, will you jog my memory?
Tell me tall tales of Montego Bay,
Table mountain, flying fish, banana spiders, pots of paint...
And the sun on the equator
Setting like an ember thrown to deep water
    From crimson to black,
    But coming back
    Tomorrow....
    On the horizon."
    -Marillion, This Strange Engine

    "Something waiting to happen
    Something learning to fly
    On the edge of exploding
    Something wild and alive
    Something waiting to happen
    Any time that you like
I have waited to feel this
For the whole of my life."
    -Marillion, Waiting To Happen

"But believe in me baby and I'll take you away
From out of this darkness and into the day
From these rivers of headlights these rivers of rain
From the anger that lives on these streets with these names
'Cos I've run every red light on memory lane
I've seen desperation explode into flames
And I don't wanna see it again..."
    -Dire Straits, Telegraph Road

"Why worry, there should be laughter after pain
There should be sunshine after rain
These things have always been the same
    So why worry now
    Why worry now?"
    -Dire Straits, Why Worry?

...and there are many, many more but for the sake of this post getting too long, I'll stop here. Ha.

Won't you please talk to me?
    We can unlock this misery....
  • Inspiring lyrical thang...

Hey Errant!! Great examples there...I had almost forgotten that marvellous track from Marillion - A Few Words For The Dead.... Have to dig out my Radiation CD!!

  • Delivery Hill by Brian Dunn

I don't lightly compare musical poets to Bob Dylan ... and Brian Dunn's style is different anyway. But in terms of lyrics that pack a punch in terms of sound as well as meaning, (which is what good poetry does) this 'hick hop' song of his Delivery Hill, imo, is right up there.

Anyway, see for yourself ... as Brian himself would say: "He didn't see that song coming!".

One way into this life, and it's a rural route,
Like a daydream runnin’ off a hand-pump spout,
And if you figure too much you're gonna count yourself out,
From getting’ up and drivin’ home.

Well I'm a blank and blue yonder penned up in suspense,
A foolish carnival of riddlin', rhymin' nonsense,
I can show you how I fly, but don’t know how to land,
Hence you best arrange a ride to drive you home.

Well how deep you can reach is how far you can stretch,
But waste too much time warmin' up you just might freeze to death,
And you'll most likely lose sight of where you don’t give sight a rest,
    Exhaustion, it'll boss you home.

But if you double your bet just take care to think twice,
Cause with every choice is a sacrifice,
And it's the simplest seemin' things, that hold the highest price,
And designate to drive you home.

Bury me up on Delivery Hill,
Let the sun bleach my bones by the moonshine still,
Let soft rain waters bless the hard cider press and drain fool's gold mill,
Quenchin' all desires, caught pannin' for thirst or fever.
It's zero to beat on Delivery Hill,
Play or burn them stakes, lay down to hold off or draw to kill,
For a gamblin' man don't ever die until, he's shot down by his maker,
    Whose holy plan's in stride.

    Certainty certainly depends,
So gather up your broken secrets and teach 'um to bend,
And if I lay down in traffic for a family of friends,
They better get me up and drive me home.

Twelve apostles are more than one Judas Iscariot,
Everybody's bringin' baggage, it's just a matter of how they carry it,
And the back bone of a body can get hidden in the thick of it,
Look both ways before you drive on home.

But spend too long a time lookin' in the mirror,
And you'll start seein' things that aren't really there,
Conceit begins to tremble, paranoia starts to flare,
Images can never drive you home.

So when one man does but a job half-assed,
Another’s gotta make up with an ass and a half,
And the time for you to shit or get off the pot is passed,
Can't wait no longer just to drive one home.

Malnourished martyrs square off with pyramidal health,
Hollerin' humans tug and war on what's communal wealth,
Need I say, not anymore, humility don't announce itself,
It just gets you up and drives you home.

Bury me up on Delivery Hill,
Offer my passin' as the sunset of our friendship,
Until tomorrow folds her warm hands over yesterday’s chill,
And we're lifted on high by the maker.
When you're buried up on Delivery Hill,
You realize the real lie is the I in really is.
Runnin' over what could be decides your own free will,
    Met halfway by your maker,
    The holy plan’s in stride.

Now goin' down is all uphill,
And best believe you goin’ down if you think you're sittin’ still,
See you can't take your u-haul to heaven when you spill,
You're drivin' home with nothin' in tow.

So while virgins vow and patriots pledge,
Helpless hearsayers harry what good-doers did,
And promises keep breakin' over jealousy's head,
Enough to get you up and drive you home.

So God creates what man critiques,
And the meek look for strength where the strong stay weak,
And you lose what you've got not findin' what you seek,
To get you up and drive you home.

There's one way to afterlife and it's a rural route,
Where a match made in heaven, is more than just a bout,
From any ray of hope will always cast a shadow of doubt,
Two by two they drive on home.

So bury me up on Delivery Hill,
Life is no more than the opportunity to feel,
And the pains you grow into, they gotta hurt to heal,
    But they're always sized perfectly,
    Fit by the maker,
    The holy plan is stride,
    The holy plan's in stride,
    Whose holy plan's in stride.

    Delivery Hill

I have invited Brian to join The Soundlings. I hope he does!

  • Fine Frenzy writes beautiful songs ..this particular song offers hope to all and that is why I love it.
    "Ashes And Wine"

Don't know what to do anymore
I've lost the only love worth fighting for
I'll drown in my tear storming sea,
That would show you, that would make you hurt like me

    All the same
    I don't want mudslinging games
    It's such a shame
    To let you walk away

    Is there a chance?
A fragment of light at the end of the tunnel?
    A reason to fight?
Is there a chance you may change your mind?
Or are we ashes and wine?

Don't know if our fate's already sealed
This day's spinning circus on a wheel
I'm ill with the thought of your kiss
Coffee laced intoxicating on her lips

    Shut it out
I've got no claim on you now
Not allowed to wear your freedom down

    Is there a chance?
A fragment of light at the end of the tunnel?
    A reason to fight?
Is there a chance you may change your mind?
Or are we ashes and wine?

    I'll tear myself away
    That is what you need
There is nothing left to say
    But

    Is there a chance?
A fragment of light at the end of the tunnel?
    A reason to fight?
Is there a chance you may change your mind?
Or are we ashes and wine?
The day's still ashes and wine
    Or are we ashes?

Somewhere someone is singing the perfect song...... We just can't hear it yet.

    Queen - Life is real

My favorite band, my favorite quirky lyric, not my favorite song... yeah!

    Guilt stains on my pillow
    Blood on my terraces
    Torsos in my closet
    Shadows from my past
Life is real life is real
    Life is real so real

    Sleeping is my leisure
    Waking up in a minefield
Dream in just a pleasure dome
    Love is a roulette wheel
Life is real life is real
    Life is real oh yeah

    Success is my breathing space
    I brought it on myself
I will price it I will cash it
I can take it or leave it
    Loneliness is my hiding place
    Breast feeding myself
    What more can I say?
I have swallowed the bitter pill
I can taste it I can taste it
Life is real life is real
    Life is real

    Music will be my mistress
    Loving like a whore
    Lennon is a genius
    Living in ev'ry pore
Life is real life is real
    Life is real so real
Life is cruel life is a bitch
    Life is real so real
Life is real life is real yeah
    Life is real

  • Don´t marry her - Beautyful South

Well, it´s not my favourite band, but this song was recommended a few days ago by a last.fm friend and I like the lyrics so much. Very funny but with a bitter truth behing it. Enjoy!

Think of you with pipe and slippers
    Think of her in bed
    Laying there just watching telly
    Think of me instead

I'll never grow so old and flabby
    That could never be
    Don't marry her,fuck me
And your love life shines like cardboard
But your work shoes are glistening
She's a PhD in "I told you so"
    You've a knighthood in "I'm not listening"

    She'll grab your sweaty bollocks
    Then slowly raise her knee
    Don't marry her,fuck me

And the Sunday sun shines down on San Francisco bay
And you realise you can't make it anyway
You have to wash the car
Take the kiddies to the park
    Don't marry her,fuck me

    Those lovely Sunday mornings
    With breakfast brought in bed
Those blackbirds look like knitting needles
    Trying to peck your head

Those birds will peck your soul out
    And throw away the key
    Don't marry her,fuck me

    And the kitchen's always tidy
    And the bathroom's always clean
She's a diploma in "just hiding things"
You've a first in low esteem

When your socks smell of angels
But your life smells of brie
    Don't marry her,fuck me

And the Sunday sun shines down on San Francisco bay
And you realise you can't make it anyway
You have to wash the car
Take the kiddies to the park
    Don't marry her, fuck me

And the Sunday sun shines down on San Francisco bay
And you realise you can't make it anyway
You have to wash the car
Take the kiddies to the park
    Don't marry her ,fuck me

    Don´t Marry Her

  • Crop of the Cream - but not funny anyway....

I can´t hold off to point at - in my opinion - best political/anti-war lyrics ever written. Bob Dylan´s Masters Of War.

    The most touching verse:

    "You've thrown the worst fear
    That can ever be hurled
    Fear to bring children
    Into the world
    For threatening my baby
    Unborn and unnamed
    You ain't worth the blood
    That runs in your veins"

There are even a few great covers of this song, for example from Pearl Jam or Roger Taylor.

  • Inspiration can have it's dark side too !

Just to follow up on Helena's "Dylan" theme, I love the opening couple of lines to It Ain't Me Babe:

    Go away from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed

Wouldn't it be nice if one day, in the midst of a heated argument, you could retain your cool sufficiently to incorporate that second line rather than just resorting to the ubiquitous "Oh, **** OFF !"

  • May It Be... Enya

These words always hit my heart...

May it be an evening star
    Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
    Your heart will be true
    You walk a lonely road
Oh! Oh how far you are from home...

Mornie ut li (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
    Mornie alanti (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now...

May it be the shadows call
    Will fly away
May it be you journey on
    To the light of day
    When the night is overcome
You will rise to find the sun...

Mornie ut li (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
    Mornie alanti (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

A promise lives within you now........

    Hauntingly beautiful song... from LOTR
