    Smoking in pubs, restaurants, etc.

Today in my country came out a law which forbids smoking in pubs and restaurants. Now if you want to smoke you have to go outside, beacause even smoking rooms are not allowed! I'm sooooooooo irritated and angry. It's winter time so I often pop to some bar to drink a coffe and to smoke a cigarette, what am I gonna do now? ;/

What's the situation in your country?

  • We have the same law in Norway.

It's been that way in America for some time. I have mixed thoughts about those laws. I think there should be a smoking side and a side for non-smokers. But if you smoke anywhere in a restaurant, a non-smoker will be able to smell no matter where they sit depending upon the size of of the restaurant.

Personally don't care for smoking and eating at the same time. But like you said, Neige-blanc about going into a pub for a smoke and a coffee on those cold days or any day for that matter, that would be nice. So perhaps I could compromise for smoking allowed in some places and not others.

We had smoking and non-smoking places before this law, but ye, the stench was still all over the place.

I would like a law that forbids bringing little children to restaurants, it's better to smell a smoke than to hear screaming and whining!

    Hah. Right on.

  • Uhm ...in Romania the laws are very relative ... and lots of laws are unenforced ... so it might be illegal but noone gives a flying fuck if u do it or not ...
Smoking laws are really unenforced ...I think 70% of the population smokes ...if you ask for a light on the streets it's weird to hear "Sorry, I don't smoke" ...
None of the bars in my town have a non-smoking room/place/whatever .
Most of the restaurants have a non-smoking section ... but that's the smallest section most of the time ...2 out of 10 tables are for non-smokers)...
We can't smoke in McDonald's :( ... guess that's the same everywhere in the world ... not even Krajikistan(made up country) wouldn't allow smokin in it's McD's restaurants ...
We can't smoke in trains ... altho if u give the train inspector about 2 euros he'll let you smoke till u drop ..
Smoking in schools is also forbidden but again unenforced(few schools have strict laws against smoking)...
What else would u like to know ?
ah yes ... you can also throw your cigarette butts wherever you want to ...u can litter as much as u like .. noone's gonna stop you altho u might hear "Fute-ar pa curva de masa in pizda!" ...
Romania ... a nice place to smoke ur cig ...(not rly...)

  • law passed in jersey over the summer, or maybe earlier. all i have to say is that eating in the diners is not the same. i think it lost some of its charm by removing the luxury of enjoying both coffee and a cigarette, perhaps with a meal. nevermind bars and shit. that's just wrong.

To quote Eddie Izzard: Soon no drinking and no talking!

  • Still legit to smoke in pubs or restaurants here - well, most of them, but such restricting laws are a trend, and I'm sure Hungary will join the club in the not so distant future :(

Every cloud has a silver lining though ... this helps people socialize more. I read somewhere that when this law was introduced in Ireland (or was it another northern country?), smoking has become more of a community event. Being forced to smoke outside, in winter, when its cold and it snows, created a sense of camaraderie between people, and sharing in this "suffering" with others became in fact rather enjoyable :)

I lived in places where smoking was forbidden in the entire building, and when I went out for a smoke, if there were others there, and weather conditions were harsh, we shared this sympathetic look, and eventually, engaged in conversations we would never had if we could smoke in our rooms or in the bar.

The worst thing though is having a coffee without a cigarette - that's really sadistic.

Yeah I noticed that this does increase social interactions, it's like smoking during the recess near the school, hiding and so on. exciting and really unites.

hey there weasel. romania, romania, what a pitoresque country! like he said, many laws exist but they are barely enforeced (and i don't mean only smoking).

but since we're a new mUE (sorry, EU) members bars are forced to have both smoking and non smoking rooms. not that it would matter much, the non smoking rooms are always empty and, when "money" calls, they let you sit there and smoke ure ciggie, no questions asked.(as long as you bring a profit).

still, being a smoker in romania is quite ok, eventhough they raised the cig prices, it's still bareable.

  • ohhh that's cruel!!! i mean i CAN'T imagine a coffee without a cigarette...

in czech rep. still completely legal, but not for a long time i'm afraid. about a year ago came out a law that forbids smoking in public places, like bus/tram stops etc. and i think the restaurants/cafés will catch up soon. how sad.

  • its the whining that comes from the anti-smokers I can't stand and these are the people that produce laws like this. A few years ago there they had the that pubs should be properly ventilated to solve any smoke related problems, 2 or 3 years later the government has not done a single thing to use this and now they're complaining that it does not work... I think that if the Dutch smokers population was to march to the Hague to protest its a problem easy solved...

There are the same problem in Lithuania. It was very difficult to adapt to new laws. It was unusual to go outside for a smoke.
I have to refuse pleasure - drink coffee with smoking cigarette in my favorite art cafe.
I think that in some places such as in pubs or cafes shouldn't be forbidden to smoke cigarettes. There are no pleasure to smoke outside in winter time or when raining... :) Besides I don't think that such laws can prevent smoking... In Lithuania its don't prevent smoking...

    the past is the prologue
  • well, i must agree that it probably will make people smoke less... like for me, the cigarette is connected with sitting comfortably in a café, drinking a coffee and smoking... not standing outside, freezing, don't know what. i think i'm more likely not to smoke at all while visiting a café then to go outside...

but still these laws suck that's sure. so far our parliament always refused such laws, but it wouldn't surprize me if one day we have it prescript from Brussels xD

well, one year later (after my last post in this thread :P) i'm happy to announce that nothing really changed in romania, but for the prices and some ugly pictures on the cigarette packs. event the cafes that we're forced to make smoke/non-smoker areas barely have non-smoking peeps hanging around.

until the next report, byez :)

The Law entered in my country and it sucks. But wanna know something funny?
Restaurant owners are now complaining because of a trick pulled of by many people. They ask for the chance to go for a smoke outside after finishing his meal, then they don´t come back to pay. Haha! funny

Utah, where I currently live, recently passed a similar law. Bars and clubs used to allow smoking (if the owner's wanted it, of course) -- but now nobody can smoke in any building, anywhere (residences excluded).

Utah had an ad campaign against smoking which stated "80% of Utahans don't want smoking in bars." Now, while Utah is a Mormon state (with about 45% of the state being LDS), this greatly influenced it. The problem is, 80% of these so-called Utahans don't go to bars.

They also upped sales tax so soon cigarettes will cost close to $6+ a pack (while they are around $4.30 now).

I personally feel it should be up to the discretion of the establishment's owner. I like smoking, and can understand that certain people do not, but I really liked smoking in the local pubs.

It's going to suck for bands who aren't headlining who want to play for a crowd, but everyone is outside because they want to smoke and socialize.

I'm moving to California though, where this law has been around for ages, so can't complain much.. but... it definitely changed the bars. Some bars are better without the smoke, but my usual haunts now suck.
