Description:
I've built 21 radios for my 22 groups, and I expect those numbers to increase. This is a listening room for all those radios, and will help the listener get a feel for the various groups. Enjoy!

~~~~~~ Ring Hub for The Radio Room Ring ~~~~~~
Futuristic RMF FM Headquarters in Krakow, Poland. Likewise, this group functions as the hub to all my groups.
Chez Musinum - from my Friends list, artists, listeners, & group leaders
Tim Doyle - my fanclub; artists similar to Tim Doyle, timpixi and The Chez Musinum Cabinet
ENTP - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving - a mix of ENTP artists and weekly group chart toppers
SlowSound, SlowerSound, SlowestSound, sharing one radio... New Weird America, alt-country, freak folk, post-rock, World, blues, arctic ambient, soundtrack+
Frame Without A Painting (Ambient Music Group) & Frame Without Another Painting: Japanese ambient, glitch, minimal, tape music, electro-acoustic, drone, field recordings, cutting-edge sounds
New Edge: New Age that's NOT elevator music!
Deep Listening: New Age, World, devotional, instrumental mastery
Light and Shadow: Soundtrack, jazz, darkwave, ethereal... Centered on Angelo Badalamenti
Chef Musinum: Chez M's artistic "kitchen"
Professor Longhair: New Orleans Plus: funk, soul, jazz, blues, roots rock, brass bands
Chappaqua: Ginsberg, Moondog, Ornette - spoken word, avant-garde, post-romantic, noise, drone+
Clifford Brown The immortal trumpet... Innocence & sophistication in every breath... the group, simply, Jazz Heaven
Chez Platinum Chez M's "deluxe annex"
Group For All People in This Group An "orphan" and the most amorphous of my groups. Connections are based on weekly group favorites, and will evolve.
Just Great Guitar! Based on a list of the greatest guitarists across all genres at DigitalDreamDoor. The best guitar sounds in the world!
Immortal Rock Vocalists Based on male & female rock vocalist lists at DigitalDreamDoor. Radio includes groups associated with the vocalists (and notable collaborations)
The Workroom A workspace for creation of new groups and for updating of existing groups
Woke up this morning... Blues (mainly older acoustic styles with some blues-rock and jazz blues) and a smattering of other (mostly rootsy) genres, including folk, jug band, gospel, Cajun, with Robert Johnson at the musical center
The Radio Room
There are two types of radios here.
The first is the traditional Tag Radio, where artists, albums, and/or tracks are given a unique tag (either personal, in which one user has complete control over the content, or global, in which anyone can apply the tag -- all of my tag radios are global), and the Tag Radio can then be played. (Formerly labels could also be tagged.)
There has always been a slight lag involved, but a big problem arose when non-subscribers could no longer play new tag radios.
The problem was eventually fixed, but meanwhile a solution was found: Library Bots. I was an early adopter, not an originator, of the Library Bot solution, but I do take credit for the name, which seems to have caught on, tho several other terms are also used.
The Library Bot is a dummy user created for the sole purpose of building a radio by putting the items (artists, albums, and/or tracks) into the dummy user's library, which anyone can then play.
The person creating the Bot has complete control over the radio content, there is no lag involved, and the last.fm Recommendations system is a very useful tool for extending the library by artist similarities and for filling in the gaps where appropriate items may have been overlooked, particularly now that recommendations are now filterable by tags (which are dynamic according to the current content of the library).
So even when the original problem was fixed, I found no reason to go back to creating more tag radios, and have continued to create Libary Bots.
The Tag Radios
Chez Musinum Artist Radio (tag )
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This station plays all artists connected to Chez Musinum and to Chef Musinum and Chez Platinum. Chez M. is my flagship group, open to anyone on my Friends list, and any members who have an artist presence are connected to either that group or to Chef Musinum or Chez Platinum, depending on the number of listeners and plays achieved.
Chef Musinum is the musical "kitchen" where artists are simmered and seasoned until they reach 200 listeners and 1000 plays, at which point they move over to the Big House at Chez Musinum; once an artist has both 1800 listeners and 9000 plays, they will move on to Chez Platinum. This division is a solution to the problem posed by the 200-artist limit for group connections.
Labels attached to members are also connected to Chez Musinum. In the case of certain small labels that are the member's own creation, the artists on that label may be tagged for the radio as well.
SlowSound (or SlowerSound or SlowestSound) Artist Radio (a.k.a. Music From Big Pink) (tag )
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This station plays all 600 artists connected to three sister groups: SlowSound, SlowerSound, and SlowestSound, which wrap a core of New Weird America, indie, singer-songwriter, alt-country, freak folk, post-rock, and a touch of shoegaze and slowcore with a mix of World music from Tibetan chants to reggae to Cuban son to MPB (Brazilian) to klezmer, blues, arctic ambient, soundtracks, artists like Sade, Alice Coltrane, Dylan, Neil Young, Melanie, Phoebe Snow, Janis Ian, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday, and more.
The Big Pink Pillow Radio
Frame Without a Painting (or Frame Without Another Painting) Artist Radio (tag )
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to two related groups, Frame Without a Painting (Ambient Music Group) and its companion Frame Without Another Painting: Japanese ambient, glitch, minimal, tape music, electro-acoustic, drone, field recordings, cutting-edge sounds from everywhere
The Library Bot Radios
Tim Doyle Artist Radio (user tim_doyle's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This station plays all artists connected to Tim Doyle, the fanclub for my artist presence Tim Doyle. This was previously a Tag Radio and was previously driven by weekly group charts, but I have changed the format so that the connections are now based on similarity to one of my three artist presences here, including timpixi (with vocals by Pixieguts and The Chez Musinum Cabinet, which is remixes by other artists. The radio has 500 artists and is based on similarity to the entire pool of connections.
ENTP Artist Radio (user e_n_t_p's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This station plays all artists connected to ENTP, a group for those who test as Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving in the Meyers-Briggs Personality Inventory (and anyone else who wants to join). About 130 of the connections are artists who have been "typed" as ENTP on various sites or in various forums devoted to the MBPI or specifically to ENTP. Of course it's a somewhat subjective and inexact matter, and very few fall squarely into one type or another, but I was inclusive rather than exclusive. The list contains quite a few comics as well, and a few scientists, philosphers, poets, and statesmen as well, where there are representative tracks on last.fm. Bands associated with ENTP artists are also included. The other 65 or so connections are based on weekly group charts going back to the beginning. Those included were on top of a weekly chart in no more than a five-way tie (with at least three listens) in at least one week. Others will be added as the weekly charts evolve...
SlowSound (or SlowerSound or SlowestSound) Artist Radio (a.k.a. Music From Big Pink) (user SlodioSlowRadio's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the three sister groups above, and adds another 200 or so for around 800 artists total. This was the "overlap" period, the first of only two stations in both tag and Library Bot form.
The Big Pink Pillow Radio
Frame Without a Painting (or Frame Without Another Painting) Artist Radio (user fwap's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to two related groups, Frame Without a Painting (Ambient Music Group) and its companion Frame Without Another Painting, plus another 72 related artists: Japanese ambient, glitch, minimal, tape music, electro-acoustic, drone, field recordings, cutting-edge sounds from everywhere. This was the "overlap" period, the second of only two stations in both tag and Library Bot form.
New Edge Artist Radio (user new_edge's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group New Edge: New Age that's NOT elevator music. ~~~~~~ Brian Eno: "The problem with New Age music is that there's no evil in it". This group is for those who like New Age without the bland pseudoclassical sound I call "New Age Lite". Keep the evil!
Deep Listening Artist Radio (user deep_listening's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group Deep Listening: Somewhere at the juncture of New Age, World Music, Devotional, and sheer musical mastery lies a font of profound wonderment and evergreen spirit... Experience Deep Listening. (Again, not elevator music, but "relaxing" and "soothing" aren't dirty words here, as they may be at New Edge.)
Light and Shadow Artist Radio (user ThruGlassDarkly's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
"Donut touch that dial!"
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group Light and Shadow: The intersecting worlds of Angelo Badalamenti, his similar artists, & theirs, & theirs... a river delta of soundtracks, neo-medieval / darkwave, ethereal, jazz, ambient, trip hop: worldly & otherworldy, awestruck to jaded.
Chef Musinum's Edible Artist Radio (user chef_musinum's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the group Chef Musinum, the "kitchen" annex of Chez Musinum, for artists with fewer than 1000 plays and/or 200 listeners (see first tag radio). Since those artists are also tagged to play on the Chez Musinum Artist Radio, they stay in rotation there while at the same time having their own "small-fry" venue where they are not overshadowed by the artists with more of an established audience.
Professor Longhair Artist Radio (user ProfessLonghair's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group Professor Longhair: I was astounded to find Professor Longhair did not have his own fanclub, so here it is! Rooted in, but not confined to, the sounds of New Orleans, our still-beating musical heart.. Funk, soul, jazz, blues, roots rock, brass bands, Memphis sounds, Motown, and more.
Chappaqua Artist Radio (user aHowl's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group Chappaqua: A group built around Allen Ginsberg, Moondog, Ornette Coleman, radiating everywhere. Needed name: turns out all 3 were part of a 1966 film, "Chappaqua" (as "Messiah," "The Prophet," & "Peyote Eater"). The connections may be unexpected... ended up with less spoken word and jazz than I expected, and a lot more avant-garde / early modernist and late classical / post-romantic, noise & drone, and quite a bit of New Weird America. What the artists seem to have in common is that they are not afraid to go out on a limb, to take the risk of abject failure, to be misunderstood or even reviled. Each artist here creates distinctive sounds and occupies previously uninhabited artistic territory.
Clifford Brown Artist Radio (user IRmembrClifford's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group Clifford Brown: A celebration the pure joy that was Brownie's horn. In a tragically short career, he left his mark forever on jazz trumpet & on the improvisor's art. Innocence & sophistication in every breath!
These 200 artists are an oasis of life-saving jazz.
Chez Platinum's Artist Radio (user Chez_Platinum's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the group Chez Platinum, the "deluxe" annex of Chez Musinum, for artists with at least 9000 plays and at least 1800 listeners (see first tag radio). Since those artists are also tagged to play on the Chez Musinum Artist Radio, they stay in rotation there while at the same time having their own "established artist" venue.
Group For All People in This Group Artist Radio (user group-4's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays, along with similar artists, all the artists connected to the group Group For All People in This Group: I was asked to take over this group by the exiting leader, so I obliged, and am now giving it the Radio Room Ring treatment (artist radio, link to the group hub here, etc.) For the connections I went back to Week One and added any artists who topped a weekly chart with at least 3 listeners in no more than a five-way tie. There are only 60 artist connections at this writing, but they will evolve as the group grows and changes. This group is the most amorphous I've led, so we'll see where it goes!
Just Great Guitar!'s Artist Radio (user theoldgringo's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the group Just Great Guitar!, The source for the 200 connections is the list of greatest guitarists (all genres) edited by George at Digital Dream Door: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_guitar-all.htmlTo quote him: "These are the greatest guitarists of all genres of music and styles of guitar. They were picked for their importance in the guitar world including innovation, respect from other guitarists, influence on both other players as well as on styles of playing, impact, legendary status, and overall importance on shaping the guitar world. Plus for the playing abilities including technique, creativity, versatility, musical depth & expression both in composing & performing, live energy and improv skills, and originality."
Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke
Immortal Rock Vocalists' Artist Radio (user rockvocals's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the group Immortal Rock Vocalists, The sources for the 200 connections are several lists of the greatest rock vocalists edited by various contributors to Digital Dream Door: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com The connections are to individual vocalists, while the radio includes the groups (and notable collaborations) associated with them, as well as many runners-up
The Workroom's Artist Radio (user workroombot's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the group The Workroom. This differs from all my other groups in that it is a “dummy” group explicitly for my use in setting up new groups and maintaining existing groups with a minimum of downtime for updates. (For example, I may redo the connections of a group from scratch and then compare the old and new connections and find that only a fraction of those connections have changed. At that point I need only to delete the outgoing connections and insert the incoming connections, with far less impact on the group.) The Artist Radio is also a dummy and is not necessarily aligned with the connections. (At this writing the connections are for Woke up this morning... and the Artist Radio, the library of dummy user workroombot, plays the new Quarter 3 lineup for The Radio Room.) Anyone may join this group, but it will be much like peeking at a construction site. As a matter of fact, this very text will pass thru the description of the group to make sure it’s formatted correctly.
Woke up this morning... Artist Radio (user wokeupam's library)
play on page~~~~~~play in software
This radio plays all the artists connected to the group Woke up this morning.... Blues and roots, with Robert Johnson as a starting point. Mostly early blues, some contemporary artists, some other rooted artists, Appalachian, jug band, a few hard to pin down
The Radio of Radios
The Radio Room Artist Radio (user TheRadioRoom's library)
    Radio is now complete with the new artist lineup!
    Quarterly reshuffling is done...need to fo the radio lineup but the connections are complete... 29 holdovers and 171 new artists here. Here's the new breakdown: 28 from Chez Musinum radio (up one), 19 from Deep Listening, 19 from the two "FWAP" groups, 16 from the three "slodio" groups, split beween Tag & Bot radios, 15 from Light and Shadow, 13 from New Edge, 10 apiece from Chappaqua, Chef Musinum, and Clifford Brown, 9 each from Chez Platinum, ENTP, and Professor Longhair, 8 each from Tim Doyle (down one), Just Great Guitar! and Immortal Rock Vocalists, 7 from Group for All People in This Group, and 3 from Woke up this morning... (Our very newest group, The Workroom, is not represented, as it is exactly that, a workspace, a staging area for the other groups.) For those who were dropped this quarter, it is a simple twist of fate. (I myself have not been represented for the second quarter in a row.)
    OK! Radio went from 399 to 491 with the new connections, and I added 49 similar artists to top it off at 540. You can see the full lineup at aHowl's library, the source of the radio.
    The biennial reorganization of connections is complete for Chappaqua! Generally speaking, the turnaround for one of these things is about one third of the connections, or somewhere in the range 60-75, but this was more extensive: just over half, fully 102 of the 200 connections replaced by others, close the the totals for Professor Longhair earlier this month. The Hawaiian and rockabilly strains are gone, and the new group, by and large, hews more closely to the three artists who spark the group: more poets, more jazz artists, more early experimental music. There is also a significant expansion of symphonic and other classical music. As always, the deleted connections remain on the Artist Radio, which will expand with the addition of the new connections (some of which may already be part of the lineup), and a dollop of similar artists added to round things out. I will be back when the radio expansion is complete. Enjoy!
    Reorganization is complete for Professor Longhair. The turnover was quite high: 106 of the 200 artists in the connections were replaced, and the music became even more strongly influenced by artists known mainly in New Orleans and less familiar to the rest of the country and the world. After the new connections, there were 503 artists on the Artist Radio (as always, dropped connections remain on the radio), after which I added another 43 related artists to round it off at 550 artists. To see the lineup, check ProfessLonghair's library. Enjoy!
    Quarterly reshuffling is done... still making the new connections but the radio lineup is complete... 28 holdovers and 172 new artists here. Here's the new breakdown: 27 from Chez Musinum radio, 19 from Deep Listening, 19 from the two "FWAP" groups, 16 from the three "slodio" groups, split beween Tag & Bot radios, 15 from Light and Shadow, 13 from New Edge, 10 apiece from Chappaqua, Chef Musinum, and Clifford Brown, 9 each from Chez Platinum, ENTP, Professor Longhair, and Tim Doyle, 8 each from Just Great Guitar! and Immortal Rock Vocalists, 7 from Group for All People in This Group, and 3 from our newest group, Woke up this morning...     OK, reorganization is complete for Light and Shadow, my group based on the associations of Angelo Badalamenti, (soundtrack / indie / instrumental / jazz / lounge / electronic / female vocalist / ambient / ethereal / rock). The turnover was very heavy: 125 of the 200 artists in the connections were replaced, and a few new themes emerged, including an unexpected thread of Celtic music. There were 475 artists already on the Artist Radio, and as always, the "dropped" connections remained on the radio. Of the 125 new connections, only 8 were already present, so I added 117 artists to bring it up to 592, after which I added another 33 related artists to top it off at 625 artists, of which 150 are brand-new. To see the lineup, check ThruGlassDarkly's library.
    I've just completed my biennial rotation of the artists connected to our second-largest group, Deep Listening. From its 2011 reorganization, I've replaced 62 of the 200 artists with a new set of artists (a few of whom may actually be re-connected after being rotated out in 2011). All the artists dropped from the connections remain on the Artist Radio, and of the 62 new connections, 21 were already on the radio. I've now added the remaining 41 artists to the 600-artist lineup, and then added another 59 related artists to round out the radio to 700 artists. So you have 100 new artists to listen to! Enjoy!
    Connections have been deleted in our quarterly ritual, very shortly to be replaced with new artists or in some cases to return. Here's the new breakdown: 28 from Chez Musinum radio, 20 from Deep Listening, 19 from the two "FWAP" groups, 16 from the three "slodio" groups, split beween Tag & Bot radios, 15 from Light and Shadow, 13 from New Edge, 10 apiece from Chappaqua, Chef Musinum, and Clifford Brown, 9 each from Chez Platinum, ENTP, Professor Longhair, and Tim Doyle, and 8 each from Just Great Guitar!, Immortal Rock Vocalists, and Group for All People in This Group.
    41 of the new artists were added to the radio, one in two spellings, raising the total to 642, which I have now expanded (using last.fm recommendations for virtual user IRmembrClifford) to 720 in the radio lineup.
    The biennial shakeup of the connections at Clifford Brown has been done, with 66 artists out and 66 in. All of the artists removed from the connections remain on the radio, and many or most of the newly connected artists are already in the much larger radio lineup (600 artists). I'm off to add those that were not already there, and probably to expand the lineup somewhat beyond that
    I've planned that in odd-numbered years I will redo group connections for all those groups where the connections are based in some way on last.fm Similar Artists, one group per month except in the months (January, April, July, October). This month's group is Tim Doyle, and the re-do is now complete. There was a turnover of about 50 artists amid the 200, and the 38 of those that were not already connected to the Artist Radio were connected, bringing the Artist Roadio roster to 538, which I then rounded out with similar artists to a full 625 count. I invite everyone to sample the new radio! (See above.)
