June 2011 Mix -- Desert Island Road Trip

  • June 2011 Mix -- Desert Island Road Trip

Apologies for my significant delay starting the thread. FYI, in the future, if I haven't started the thread after a week and you're ready to post, by all means feel free to start it, I promise I won't mind.

    Now, where were we?

    Here's your theme results:

    Desert Island Disc 11 32%
    A Journey To... 9 26%
On the Road Again 11 32%

So once again, we have two options to pick from.

The Desert Island Disc -- the tracks you couldn't live without. I believe I put an 8 song limit on it. This will definitely be a difficult theme, having to choose your favorite 8 songs, but fun when you get there. Add a book if you'd like.

On the Road Again -- Road trip songs, yo! I warned you about the likelihood I'd front a big southern rock mix, but that apparently didn't scare you away.

Here's your partners, so be sure to say hi, decide what you want to do and all that good stuff:

    Tom_Meade - vitreus
    _218_5_ - ponchosqueal
    scatterboo - anemonlaut

  • Hi all, here's my Desert Island Disc for Calaveth. This is the music I'd take with me if I were to be marooned on a desert island today. At another time, who knows, the list might be different .... but not much different.

    Desert Island Disc

    01. Martial Canterel - Other Half
    02. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - From Her to Eternity
    03. The Glove - Sex-Eye-Make-Up (RS Vocal Demo)
    04. The Fall - Glam-Racket
    05. Rowland S. Howard - (I Know) A Girl Called Jonny
    06. The Smiths - Reel Around The Fountain
    07. Suicide - Che
    08. Tom Waits - Hang Down Your Head

On track 3: for anyone who doesn't know this, RS refers to Robert Smith (of The Cure)
On track 5: the girl singing with Rowland S. Howard is Jonnine Standish (of HTRK)

According to the BBC radio's D.I.D. show, there's supposed to be a luxury item and a book, in addition to the music.
I'd forgo the luxury item, and take my daughter with me instead, and the book would have to be something we'd both enjoy reading, so The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

It's a rather short mix this time and here's where you can get it:

    http://www.divshare.com/folder/879722-314

  • My mix was made for beautifulwaste, who gave me a very nice mix, both with some favorites of mine as well as some new acquaintances (how could I have missed the Fall? Fantastic song).

My mix ended up a bit different than most mixes I've made for this group. A lot more established artists, for one. I wanted to stay true to the Desert Island theme (shouldn't it be Deserted Island? Why a desert? Anyway...), which for me meant going back to a bunch of old favorites (and a couple of new ones, got to mix it up a bit), most of which I listened to long before last.fm existed. And since I still listen to them, I figure I could go for quite a while on that island without getting overly tired of them.

A book would have to be something I haven't read, would take a long time to finish, and something I'd be reasonably sure I would enjoy. With that in mind I'll bring Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon which can double as a blunt weapon. Not sure about luxury item... A laptop with a satellite modem? A bit of a cop out, but how I could I survive without an internet connection? I'd be bored to death in half an hour... Which accidentally is how long the mixtape is, give or take a few minutes...

  • Yodel and I both went for the road mix. Here is mine - more of a "modes of transportation"/ train mix than a road mix but what the heck...

    Move it

    1. La Bottine Souriante - Sur La Route
    2. Papas Fritas - Way You Walk
    3. Swansway - Soul Train
    4. Brown Recluse Sings - Midnight Train
    5. John Lennon - Watching The Wheels
    6. Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper
    7. The Colorblind James Experience - Considering A Move To Memphis
    8. Anajo - Gleis 7, 16 Uhr 10 (=Platform 7, 4.10 pm)
    9. Elbow - Station Approach
    10. Sharon Tandy - One Way Street
    11. Frank Sinatra - I Went Down To Virginia
    12. Marilyn Monroe - Runnin' Wild
    13. Luna - California (All The Way)

    15. Kettcar - Die Ausfahrt zum Haus deiner Eltern (=The exit leading to your parents' house)
    16. Fanfarlo - I'm A Pilot

After 2 months without getting a mix, I was kinda demotivated. Luckily, I got paired with Jewce this month, who proposed making a mix for both themes.

I've done an "On the road"-mix before, but I kinda didn't like it anymore so here is On the road, again.

    1. Josh Ritter - Leaving
    2. Warren Zevon - My Ride's Here
    3. Goldfrapp - Road to Somewhere
    4. Dr. Dog - Worst Trip
    5. Chris Robinson - Ride
    6. C-mon & Kypski - Bumpy Road
    7. Soul Asylum - Homesick
    8. The Black Crowes - (Only) Halfway To Everywhere
    9. Tom Waits - Ol' 55
    10. Admiral Freebee - Always On The Run
    11. Matt Mays & El Torpedo - Travellin'
    12. Jack Johnson - Country Road (with Paula Fuga)
    13. Cake - Wheels
    14. Liam Finn - Wide Awake On The Voyage Home
    15. Yael Naim and David Donatien - Come home
    Get it here.

Then the desert island mix. I liked that one, I really had to think about it. Lonely at a desert island, I want to hear the singing voices I love the most, telling me comforting (and sometimes not so comforting) stories to keep my spirits up.

    1. Beastie Boys - Sabotage
    2. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Sink Ships
    3. The Black Crowes - I Ain't Hiding
    4. dEUS - Secret Hell
    5. Mumford & Sons - The Cave
    6. Jamie Lidell - Multiply (In a Minor Key - Piano by Gonzales)
    7. Josh Ritter - Wings
    8. Acda en De Munnik - Lopen tot de zon komt
    Link.

A book! A book! The unbearable lightness of being by Milan Kundera, because I can read it over and over again and it doesn't get old. Or the collected works of John Irving (which is probably what made the ship sink). As a luxury item I'd take a coffee machine (OF COURSE there will grow coffee beans on MY island).

    ♫ the music's never loud enough ♫
  • Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

My road trip themed tape for [user]muzikizum[user]. I went for modes of transport, because I don't associate any particular genre or artist with driving. Despite the title, no planes were used in the compiling of this mixtape. I did use a horse though.

    01. Shut Up And Dance-Lamborghini [1991]
    02. Gold Panda-Snow & Taxis [2010]
    03. Black Kids-I Wanna Be Your Limousine [2008]
    04. Adam and the Ants-Car Trouble [1979]
    05. XTC-Helicopter [1979]
    06. The KLF-Last Train To Trancentral [1990]
    07. Hanayo-Joe Le Taxi [2000]
    08. Cars & Trains-Asleep On A Train (bomarr Remix) [2009]
    09. Gary Numan-Cars (Dave Clarke Remix) [2006]

Here are my mixes for Knirrie

My road trip mix is just a group of songs that are MUST haves when on a road trip for me. The journey would be incomplete without any of them.

    1. The Beatles - Drive My Car
    2. Sam Roberts - Hard Road
    3. Tom Cochrane - Life is a Highway
    4. Paul Simon - Boy in the Bubble
    5. The BoDeans - Paradise
    6. Ferraby Lionheart - A Crack In Time
    7. Ben Kweller - I Gotta Move
    8. A Goofy Movie - On The Open Road
    9. Paolo Brian & The Steamclocks - Prisoner
    10. Mason Jennings - Keepin It Real
    11. John Williams - Indiana Jones Temple of Doom
    12. Bob Schneider - Getting Better
    13. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again
    14. CCR - Up Around The Bend

    King of the Road

I totally forgot to number off the files for you, I apologize. I know its pretty random. Some are just tradition, some are classic road trip, and some are just plain fun. The Indiana Jones theme while you're going down a bumpy road is always a good time.

My island mix is basically songs that I could never grow tired of. They would remind me of all the love I've come to know in life, I would never feel alone with these tunes.

    1. Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamonds
    2. Bob Dylan - Red River Shore
    3. Mason Jennings - Sacred Place
    4. Mason Jennings - Ballad For My One True Love
    5. Sigur Ros - Staralfur
    6. Sea Wolf - The Garden You Planted
    7. Bob Schneider - The World Exploded Into Love
    8. The Beach Boys - Sloop John B.

    My Island

    Hope you all enjoy :)

  • Desert Island Discs + BBC Radio 4 mix

I don't know what my mixtape partner jacquip will make of my desert island discs, nor any of the rest of you. I've expanded the brief by including themes and stuff from BBC Radio 4, the at times highbrow spoken-word radio station from which Desert Island Discs comes:

    1. The Pips
    2. Radio 4 UK Theme - Andrew Vintner - used to be played at the start of each day on R4
    3. Desert Island Discs (Theme Tune Radio 4) - the sleepy lagoon - Carl Davis, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
    4. The Queen Is Dead - Smiths - the rather unpatriotic start to my 8 desert island discs
    5. Long Island - Wave Pictures
    6. I'm On Standby - Grandaddy
    7. Crawl - Wedding Present
    8. Temptation - New Order
    9. Woman - Durutti Column
    10. A Wooden Horse - British Sea Power
    11. Rock 'n' Roll Suicide - David Bowie - my last desert island disc, then it's back to R4...
    12. Journey of the Sorcerer - Eagles - theme to Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy on R4
    13. Minute Waltz - Frédéric Chopin - theme to Just A Minute on R4
    14. The Typewriter - Ian Sutherland Orchestra - theme to News Quiz on R4
    15. Barwick Green - Sidney Torch and his Orchestra - theme to The Archers on R4
    16. In A Party Mood - West End Orchestra - theme to Housewives' Choice (not on R4 but it suits)
    17. Sailing By - BBC Radio 4 Theme - Carl Davis, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - played late every night on R4
    18. Sleepy Lagoon Waltz - "Katy Lou" Wurlitzer 153 Carousel Band Orchestra - the Desert Island Discs theme played on an organ, for fun

I don't know what book or luxury item I'd take. It was hard enough coming up with the mix.

  • Here's my mix for jonny_m. We opted for the road trip theme -- at least in my case, the hours of agonizing over which 8 songs to include would have taken me much more time than I had at my disposal this month.

That said, it's been a while since I've made a good road trip, but like riding a bike some things you never forget. Some of these are literal launching points, some of these have the mood of being out on the road. Some of these are plain goofball. Either way, I like it -- I'll be testing it out next weekend.

So without further ado, get it here:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?yhgbpabikjp5pfr

    The playlist:
    01 Convoy - C.W. McCall
    02 Texarkana - REM
    03 Passenger Side - Wilco
04 Won't Be Coming Home - Golden Smog
05 Secret Knowledge of Backroads - Pavement
    06 Lower 48 - The Gourds
07 The Road - Frank Turner
    08 Trust Jesus - Slobberbone
09 Out of Gas - Modest Mouse
10 Six Days on the Road - The Flying Burrito Brothers
11 Wiser Time - The Black Crowes
12 Road to Home - Girl in a Coma
13 Roads Girdle the Globe - XTC
    14 Can't Hardly Wait - The Replacements
    15 $1000 Car - The Bottle Rockets
16 Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel
    17 Wheels - Steve Earle
18 King of the Road - Rodger Miller
19 End of Miles - Frank Black
20 Holiday Road - Lindsey Buckingham
21 Going Mobile - The Who
22 Roll Another Number for the Road - Neil Young

Convoy?! Yes, I went there. Enjoy!

Here is my mix for georgethe23rd. I thought about the Desert Island Discs, but found I am far too indecisive. So respect to those of you who have managed it! • Cormac McCarthy's Road Trip Mixtape

recrapulated and I weren't into the deserted theme, so here's my road trip mix. This is from an idea I failed to work out last year while waiting for the movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" to be released.

It came together nicely after I stopped trying to edit down Godspeed You Black Emperor's F♯ A♯ ∞ for interstitial sound bites.

    02. Help, I'm Alive - Metric
    03. Hard Time Killing Floor - Buddy Guy

    This is for you, ponchosqueal!

    Desert Island Disc
01 Håkan Hellström - Känn ingen sorg för mig Göteborg
    02 The Jayhawks - I'd run away
03 Neutral Milk Hotel - In the aeroplane over the sea
04 The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out
05 The Supremes - You can't hurry love
06 Vega - Shake up your soul
07 Belle and Sebastian - Mary Jo
08 The Hidden Cameras - The Man that I am with my man

I think I may have used all these songs in mixtapes in this group before, but well, there is a reason; I love them!

    The 8

01 I think everybody in Sweden knows this song. Håkan is one of the most loved artists here. And yes I know, he can't sing. Maybe you just have to know swedish to understand the magic about him... This song is from his debut album from 2000, the title means "Don't feel bad for me Gothenburg".
02 I got this on a mixtape from my Dad last year. When I moved last summer I listen to this in the car on repeat for about an hour, something I rarely do with any songs.
03 I just resently found about the album with the same title, now it's like a girlfriend I wish I had met earlier, especially this song.
04 Take me out tonight... Who doesn't like this song?
05 I listen to this when I feel lonely I guess, always makes me feel better.
06 Vega is a swedish band, not sure they still play together though. This is such a beautiful song, with the boy vs girl singing.
07 I listen to this when I feel loney I guess, always make me feel a bit worse.
08 "I sit, while he stands/over me, I can hardly see/that he is peeing on my shoulders and knees/a warm, wet, yellow breeze", if that's not love, I don't know what is. Seriously.

  • Hey all, here is my mixtape for _218_5_ I hope you enjoy it very much.
