December 2011 mix -- Best of 2011

Howdy everybody!

December is now upon us, which means we have a lot of news. Which to do first?

Well, let's first say -- please make sure you've got your November mixes wrapped up and shipped off to your partners. Please share them with everyone else at the forums. There are some killer mixes up there already, but there's still room for yours, I promise!

And, being December, your theme this year is the Best of 2011. Whether this is music released this year, or just the standouts from what you stumbled upon or what ruled your players this year, share your favorites. Partners will be included below.

But now on to the big news (not to bury it)! As I mentioned a few months back, I'm stepping down as leader of the group after this month (message). It's been fun and I hope I haven't ruined the place. Thanks to all the support you guys have given over the year and I hope I did the gig justice by you.

And so, as I mentioned before, there is now a new leader to announce, and believe me, I couldn't be happier that he volunteered. He has been a giant help to me over the past year, and is more than qualified to lead this soiree.

So without further ado, let me please introduce your all-new for 2012 group leader, artephiusfm!

I have no idea what sort of plans or expectations he'll have for the upcoming year, but hopefully we don't have to all make one-track mixes!

Please lend him a hand when you can...this is an easy job, but that doesn't mean it's always easy. To paraphrase something I'm sure I said at the beginning of my reign of terror, this is your group, regardless of who's in charge. Please feel free to voice your opinions any time, and shape it as you see fit. And who knows? Maybe this time next year, artephiusfm may be making this same message about you.

well some wires got crossed or something and i didn't get a partner this month, but really it's not that big of a deal considering the theme, so i figured i'd go ahead and post.

this year i opted to only do a top ten, instead of doing top ten metal and top ten not metal, because i wanted to insure that i got my picks up on my blog promptly this year, instead of taking until august to get my reviews written. ;]

so here you have it. the number of the track is it's place on my list, and is also (where possible) the coinciding track on its respective album, as i don't like playing favorites.

there's a bit of variety here, from trip hop to black metal to dubstep to progressive metal to slowcore (man i fucking hate that "genre" name) to indie folk, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

Getting older and older

I tried something different this year and compiled the 25 artists that I added the most this year. I know that the concept favours artists with an impressive back catalogue (making it easier to add a big number of songs).

Nevertheless, the results were quite an eye opener for me, making me realise that this was probably the year that I finally drifted over into "mature" music. Apart from really cool stuff from Africa and Haiti, most of the rest is roots music, i.e. folk, country, Americana, Western swing. And most is slow to medium stuff.

Here's my mix for knirrie, my last mix as group leader (well, I already abdicated, so asterisk away if you must!).

Knirrie and I share a high musical compatibility, which for most months can work in your favor. However, with such a specific theme, of course, we had a lot of overlap. And she beat me to it, so I was kinda stuck having to rethink my list. So, what I ended up with isn't a 'Best Of' the year, but just a general retrospective of artists she hadn't included.

And even without that, I would have had a hard time with a best of, when really the big takeaway for me this year was more disappointment. Wilco had another album out and even though I have been losing interest with every passing lackluster release, I found The Whole Love to be pretty good. But not great. The Jayhawks reunited and released their first album in like 15 years with both Gary Louris and Mark Olsen, and while it sounded like it was just on the heels of Tomorrow the Green Grass, it still wasn't up to the heights of that or Hollywood Town Hall (or even Rainy Day Music, for that matter). But I still loved the hell out of that one for a while.

And, for the rest, well, it was another year of a bunch of music coming across my desk, but not getting to dig in and really absorb these albums for long. So, a best-of album ranking is pretty tough for me this year, but I still know a good tune when I hear it, so that's what we got here. Hope you enjoy!

and ps. to my partner and everyone else, I'll hopefully be catching up with making mixes today. I'm behind for a good reason though! My computer had a minor disaster, and my bf managed to save all my music BUT none of the itunes ratings or playlists...so now I can't even FIND the music I like. this is what I get for having over 20,000 songs in my itunes.
