We know it's easy to discover music in the first place, but how do you come back around to what you've already found? Tips appreciated here!

Using a tagging system usually works for me, but plenty fall through the cracks. Sometimes you just want to kick back and listen, not work at labeling everything, y'know? Then there are the "untaggables" (the fun, weird stuff)...

  • Random shuffles

I have this really complicated shuffling system built over several years that does a pretty good job at keeping decent music flowing through the speakers. Unfortunately, there are always a couple records that I decide to like when I'm not really paying attention and that I forget about, sometimes for years.

I love my genres and I'm enjoying my education here in Last.fm but I don't really organise my music like that. I find I prefer to divide by tempos and then that way, I am more likely to hear what's in my stash.

I've narrowed it down to 3 basics: upbeat, midtempo and comatose. So that's any time of the day pretty much covered and without thinking too hard about what I want, I just fire them up and leave them to it. I find they're a good way of getting know new music as well as appreciate old favourites.

Upbeat: just a bit of fun, which was Rob Brydon's catchphrase in his short-lived chat show. Mainly artist-led.

Midtempo: chillout, yes, yes, a brainless name but that's the whole point: no thought required, everything I want when I want it. Mainly artist-led.

My precious: music to fall asleep to. How many people have a song dedicated to a tag radio? I can't liiiiive, if living is without yooooou. The original, by Badfinger. Mainly track-led.

  • I am still trying to work out a way of of identifying those artists I have found that I like to those that I don't. My basic thought pattern would be to give each artist a tag rating out of 10;

1 - Hatred (I really do not like this)
2 - Annoying (Please switch this off)
3 - Dull (This is boring, isn't there something better)
4 - Poor (I will listen to, but is it really worth it)
5 - OK (I have no real opinion on this band)
6 - Reasonable (I will choose to listen to, I may buy an album by them at the right price)
7 - Good (I will choose to listen to, I will buy an album by them)
8 - Very Good (Music that gives me a good feeling, I will own their back catalogue as eventually)
9 - Great (Really good music, I will own their back catalogue as soon as possible)
10 - Love It (I have to listen to this band as much as possible)

  • One problem with tagging artists you don't like is that they go into your library and may end up in your radio more frequently.

Just hitting the default button works best for me. I neither rate nor classify, nor do I do playlists or mixtapes. Almost always the unpredictable comes the closest to the perfect.

That is fine but I do have some rubbish in my library and I need a way to identify it. I could remove it but only to discover it again and that is why I need my rating system.

For artists/songs that I like when I am listening to Last.fm radio or someone else's library I just add them to a playlist so that I can easily find them later and listen some more. I have yet to work out a tagging system that works well for me. Sometimes I just randomly browse through my library and go back to an artist with a name or profile picture that I find interesting and 'rediscover' artists that way.

  • i listen to my library using

    generated urls

it's a little random but rather fun
