@rectifyingcalm it matters because, how people will listen to music that appeals to them if they just listen music that are on tv, radio and mtv, those medias dont show a huge amount of sub-genres, genres and artists. A example if a person would really love or if heard, but he has not heard yet because he just look on tv and radio, this mean that he dont listen music that he really like, just the music that he like from the tv, and radio list, that can be really far from the type of music that he would really like if he discovered artists and type of music that are not om media. That is why most of the world people listen the sames thinks, people have different tastes but they listen to the same thing because they dont know anything outside the tv list and have to choose from this list of artists (that is very small)

For a group whose aim is to listen to obscure music I find it hilarious that the two highest artists are The Beatles and Radiohead. However it pleases me immensely to see Pixies so high up.

OH hoy, I forgot this group for a while. But somehow, there are not very many people here?

You are 0% mainstream. How about that?

I'm kind of curious as to what it matters how mainstream an individual is. People listen to music that appeals to them, and engineering charts in some facade of superiority-via-obscurity seems to fly in the face of what's awesome about music. Do individuals just have so little depth to their personality that they feel they can define themselves only by their listening habits? That seems to unnec

I'm back. It's back. But I've lost all my obscure stuff from my PC because it decided to die on me whilst I was on holiday. Please continue, however. Good work, proteges.

Me = 19.81% mainstream. Since when should listening to music be a competition?

    June 2007
  • brainwash79

so with your rationale, you expect from pathetic creatures who are uncool to start listening to music they do not like just to lower their mainstream.. pretty smart..

    June 2007
  • Thebum06

0.47 % mainstream :) And I haven't been listening to artists I normally don't listen to just to get it down

0.01% and I didn't suffer too terribly. I thought about shooting for 0.00% this week but instead I'll just see what my natural result is.

You know the difference between <1% and 2.something% is actually phenomenal! Nonetheless that is impressive!

  • DarknessFish

Didn't know about this group, and I got 2.49% mainstream last week, even with one Bjork track. I might be a natural.

Good work, fellow travellers! Just got back from a two-day bender and saw this weekly roundup. I was deliberately not trying this week, by the way. And I won't for the coming week either. I'll need my semi-mainstream steez for this exam week!

  • natalalaa

God, if you think that gives us cred then you should surely check out the weekly chart for albums; I have never seen a group effort so immense! http://www.last.fm/group/The+Last.fm+Mainstream+Challenge/charts?charttype=weekly&subtype=album&range=124

I take such immense pride in looking at who the group's top artists are - much better than the usual Coldplay/Arctic Monkeys dirge on group pages! I mean they're all crackers! Kudos please.

Nice work to all. Have you noticed how the challenge has acted like a neighbour repellent!? I only have 2 neighbours based on last week!! That's not so fun. The price you pay for being cool...

    May 2007
  • Maroder

I was 0.03% mainstream last week! YAY!

    May 2007
  • TimeShapers

A thousand thanks. That was fun and challenging. Like some kind of sonic detox (hey - I think I'll use that for a track name in future, no pilfering). I'll aim to do it once a month.

    May 2007
  • natalalaa

Ha. Indeed your task is over, you may now return to normality! Mine aren't updating even though my last.fm weekly charts have done, I'm getting impatient.

Oh man. I did not even click on that drop-down list. One would think that I am not an IT consultant. Sheesh! Can I quit now?

    May 2007
  • natalalaa

What are you talking about, I just looked at your weeklies and you've got 0.62%! Quite the feat. The page hasn't updated for me yet so maybe you looked before it did. But bloody hell, well done!

    May 2007

Two hours to go and I've ended up at 9.47%. I'm waving the white flag!

Good for you! I recently dug up some CDR's with really old shit that's extremely obscure!

    May 2007
  • xAim33x

Ok, I'm starting on Sunday. Look at my charts and prepare to laugh at how badly I'm going to do ;]

    May 2007
  • natalalaa

I'm still 15.82% on the main charts but that's unsurprising as it's not like I'd expect them to change that much this week. I switched on the radio this morning and heard a snippet of Pulp then felt like a traitor so turned it off immediately. Am enjoying today much more than Wednesday, I'm having to be a bit selective about it though!

    May 2007
  • TimeShapers

Oh mama - I'm down to 10.2% on the M-O-M. But a whole stack of mainstream CDs is looking up at me whispering, play me...play me.

    May 2007
  • Shotton

I know what you mean, although I've not got anything really on, I do like to listen to music before I go out but music I can sing too. This week it just hasn't happened, i've felt empty. My brain has compiled infinite dreams for me to inspire my mind though which is excellent.

You know we couldn't have picked a worse week for this, I've lost my only solace!
