"Trip rock", "doom rock", "cosmic rock", "neo-psychedelia"... so many possibilities of good tags for The Gathering and you still do the "gothic metal" non-sense...

Everyone who disagrees with...

Tagging The Gathering "gothic metal" is wrong.

Their music fits many different categories - their sound is very atmospheric, trippy, sometimes psychedelic/avant-garde... sometimes heavy... progressive... sometimes touching alternative pop... "cosmic doom rock" << that's an example of a good tag for The Gathering :)

They started as s death/doom metal band, and If they ever played something maybe a bit "gothic" it was on their second album "Almost a Dance" << but that's really not their most listened album... Yes, the may have influenced the genre. That's right.

But for many years everything about The Gathering is far from the "gothic" trend and I find this label very unfiting for my beloved band.

I just want the people who visit The Gathering's page here at last.fm to get a different perception about the band than "gothic". If you agree JOIN! And feel free to discuss in our forum and write down your opinions...

Here's how I see it. Always (and before) was death/doom metal, Almost a Dance was melodic doom metal, Mandylion was melodic doom metal, Nighttime Birds was melodic progressive metal. As far as I'm concerned, everything after that is some kind of atmospheric trip-rock.

Gothic ? No. but they used to be until 98/99. Mandylion and Nighttime birds had definite goth elements either you like it or not

Gothic metal is a bit of a vague genre. Most bands labelled as gothic metal don't think that they are playing gothic metal anyway.

hey, hey now. they have at least 3 or 4 metal albums. i agree with oroshii, mandylion is atmospheric metal not gothic metal.. finally someone agrees. and always is not gothic metal, it's a doom album.. atmos/melodic doom imo. almost a dance is their only gothic metal album.

Mandylion is a famous atmospheric metal album, which inspired gothic metal. (the next one is atmo metal too, maybe a bit less) But... it doesn't matter. Just Last.FM tags... As the band has changed, it may be complicated for some listeners ^^! Death/doom => atmospheric metal => mix of experimental atmospheric trip rock

Horrible group, this is a group for people like Leyasu who has such a holy and passionate mission to get things right, but it's just not worth it, not worth the time nor worth the effort.
