After a year long hiatus, the #1 fourth album from the undisputed King of the game - Beyoncé - is titled 4.
NEW YORK, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records will release "4," the fourth solo studio album from Beyonce on Tuesday, June 28, 2011.
The album was recorded over a year between the spring of 2010 and the spring of 2011, while Beyonce took time away from the spotlight. She engaged in what she describes as simple things, including listening to every kind of music she truly enjoys. Her mixed musical gumbo will be displayed on the upcoming album.
The title signifies not only the artist's fourth solo offering and the day of her birth but it is also a personal gift to her fans. For over one year now her fans around the world took to their social media pages urging her to name the album for her special number.

The critics give "4" RAVE reviews!!
Beyoncé is such a force of nature that it's easy to overlook her trump card: She's a bit of a weirdo. Not a weirdo like her stiffest competition, Lady Gaga. (Wearing sirloin to an awards show isn't B's style.) Her weirdness is musical - it's in the idiosyncratic way she syncopates her vocals, the odd melodies she floats over rugged beats, her sui generis mix of rap bravado, gospel sanctimony and old-fashioned showbiz razzle-dazzle. -Rolling Stone (3.5 / 5 stars)
Beyoncé is aiming for something a bit more challenging with 4: love the one you're with, and have some fun doing it, too. The album's relative riskiness extends to its music, which side-steps Top 40 radio's current Eurobeat fixation for a refreshingly eclectic mix of early-90s R&B, 80s lite soul, and brass'n'percussion-heavy marching music -Pitchfork ( 8.0 / 10) *highest rated review ever for a female popstar
Happily, Sasha Fierce takes five elsewhere on this often-gorgeous collection of ballads and mid-tempo cuts rich with echoes of late-'70s/early-'80s pop-soul. -SPIN ( 8 / 10)
At its best, “4” pushes at the edges of pop, but unlike on her best songs, “Crazy in Love” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” she does this more with seduction than sauciness. The first four tracks are ballads, each of a different variety, and each striking in its own way. “4” is a surprising, confident turn, even if the surprises are of a subtler variety. - LA TIMES ( 3 / 4 stars)
From the opening lines of the crushing "1+1," Beyoncé's voice is ripe and, well, full-bodied, and the glow continues through until the climax of the album's first single -Slant (3.5 / 5 stars)
The music of “4” is often this subtle and surprising, certainly more creative. Front-loaded with cool keyboards and easygoing melodies in the first half, then marching through a Caribbean parade at the end, “4” smacks of an artist with clout casting about for fresh inspiration but ultimately doing what she wants and not letting a record label dictate many artistic decisions (thus the panic now). -Chicago Sun-Times ( 3 / 4 stars)

Beyoncé's new single, "Best Thing I Never Had," co-written by Beyoncé and Babyface was immediately released to radio & iTunes on 6/1/2011. The song is a riveting & powerful midtempo ballad kissing off an old lover. About her songwriting partner, Beyoncé had this to say: "Babyface is one of the most genuine icons I've worked with and also one of the best songwriters in the world." Critics weigh in on "Best Thing I Never Had"!
It is outstanding to hear Beyonce experiment and push her fans and critics in new directions, and then it is also always exhilarating to hear her return to a comfort zone. Look for "Best Thing I Never Had" to return Beyonce to the upper reaches of pop singles charts this summer. -About.com
Things are looking way up for Beyonce... Once again, our hero takes her time dismissing a former lover, this time in language ("Sucks to be you right now") agreeable to a nation of tweens and in a manner agreeable to anyone who likes yelping along in unison to ascendant pop choruses. -New York Magazine
While the first two tastes of the album, ‘Run the World (Girls)‘ and ‘End of Time,’ were raw and seemed to abandon B’s normally slick, polished production, she dips her toes back into the larger-than-life, cleanly produced pop song pool with ‘Best Thing I Never Had'. But despite the sheen and high production values, Beyonce’s attitude asserts itself in this kiss off to a piss-poor ex-lover. (4/5 stars) -Pop Crush
“Best Thing I Never Had” feels like the kind of crossover hit that will help 4 join the rest of Beyoncé’s discography in multiplatinum land. -Entertainment Weekly
Fresh off the fist-pumping reception of "Run the World (Girls)", Beyoncé just dropped the second single from her upcoming album 4, and this time, it's a ballad. But not just any ballad: a vengeful ballad. "The Best Thing I Never Had" is quite affecting, and Beyonce does an amazing job with the vocals, as always. 4 is shaping up to be quite a well-rounded collection of songs, so far. -MTV
KiNG B ROCKS Glastonbury as the FIRST Female Headliner EVER!
RATED: 5 STARS
Fireworks, slick choreography and all the hits – Beyoncé didn't put a foot wrong during her Glastonbury headline set.
Beyoncé's headline slot has attracted none of the this-doesn't-belong-at-Glastonbury controversy of her husband Jay-Z's headline performance a few years ago, but there's a definite sense of curiosity in the air before she takes the stage: what is the biggest R&B star in the world going to do? The immediate answer appears to be everything at once: let off fireworks, rise out of the stage on a hydraulic platform doing a choreographed dance routine while singing her biggest hit Crazy in Love.
It's a pretty gobsmacking opening that leaves you wondering what she's going to do next, but more gobsmacking still is that the show doesn't sag afterwards. She hurtles into Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It). More fireworks. More dancing. Aside from a faintly baffling guest appearance by Tricky – who seems as confused by his arrival onstage as the audience – she never puts a foot wrong, rattling through Destiny's Child hits and covers of Alanis Morisette's You Oughta Know, Kings of Leon's Sex on Fire and Etta James's At Last, the latter over footage of the civil rights movement and president Obama, the sheer visceral power of her voice chafing thrillingly against the slickness of the show.
Moreover, she engages with the festival itself – Halo is accompanied by footage of Glastonbury goers in the mud, which doesn't make an enormous amount of sense but is at least a nice thought – and looks genuinely taken aback by the reception: "You are witnessing a dream! I always wanted to be a rock star!" she shouts, clearly utterly delighted. The noise the audience make in response suggests the feeling is entirely mutual.

Everybody LOVES Beyoncé!
After storming the stage with an electrifying & career defining performance at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, Beyoncé has been the talk of the past week! Find out what some of your favorite artists had to say about it.
Pitchfork: Beyoncé's '1+1' is a "Timeless CLASSIC"!
Among other things, Beyoncé's "1+1" is a clever, of-the-moment update on Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World". Writer/producers Tricky Stewart and The-Dream retain the 1960 hit's "don't know much about algebra" line, but they scoop up that love song sentiment and plop it down into the perilous world of 2011. Cooke told his girl, "I know that if you love me too/ What a wonderful world this could be," while Beyoncé, referencing death, war, and maybe even a pending apocalypse, knows that the world is chaos, and just hopes that love can still do what Sam Cooke promised. "Make love to me," she implores, mixing vulnerability and confidence, and then she even explains why you should: "When the world's at war/ That our love will heal us all."
But this Sam Cooke update is also a Prince homage. Specifically "Purple Rain" thanks to those delicate guitars, melodramatic piano, and Beyoncé affecting the Purple One's high-register whimper a few times. But what could have been just a musical exercise for Stewart and The-Dream ("I don't know about guns/ But I've been shot by you" is a Prince-like head scratcher for sure) becomes something so much more for Beyoncé. So she really digs in and sells the song's knotty qualities, and when that over-the-top guitar break appears exactly when it should, it's cathartic. At that precise moment, this passionate pastiche of timeless pop becomes a classic all its own.
The Révolution starts NOW!
In the next chapter of her career, Beyoncé certainly seems dedicated to breaking new ground. It takes guts for one of the world's biggest pop stars to release such a stridently unconventional single as the militaristic, beat-driven "Run the World (Girls)," built around a freaky sample from relatively obscure indie favorites Major Lazer's club hit, "Pon de Floor." That's just the first salvo in the unexpected collage of sonic textures and unique song structures on her new album, which features edgy new collaborators like Switch (who makes up half of Major Lazer) along with established hitmakers like The-Dream.
The meaning behind '4'
The upcoming fourth album is titled 4. In an exclusive interview with Billboard's Ray Rogers, the star says that the album's title was inspired by her fans. "Everywhere I look, I see them calling it '4,' she explains. "I had a whole other name and concept, but I keep seeing that the fans love the name '4,' and I think it would be a really nice thing to let them name the record."
The number four also holds personal significance for Beyoncé, and not just because her latest studio album will be her fourth as a solo artist. "We all have special numbers in our lives, and 4 is that for me," she says. It's the day I was born. My mother's birthday, and a lot of my friends' birthdays, are on the fourth; April 4 is my wedding date."
