darkderelict the genre is about the music. not the vocals, not the lyrics, not the ideas. there is no such thing as " female fronted","male fronted", "viking metal"..and other stupid tags.

CGholy Does it really matter what gender the vocalist is?

Scent-of-Woman Interested in discussing this? Okay: first point, not all of the bands tagged as metal are metal. Is it therefore wrong to use that tag and tag radio? What if I like both rock and metal and the tag therefore serves my needs perfectly? Second, what? Third, you are generalizing about the music and you are generalizing about its fans. I like quality music with female vocals. If the music doesn't please your taste, that's your problem. If you are really concerned about how this tag has come to represent a misplaced focus, then I think you are worried about mere symptoms of a disease in metal culture's perception of women. For that matter, the mainstream pop music culture adores singers far above musicians. Tags result from these things, and arguing about them only results in unjust attacks on the innocent: those of us who use this tag because it's a legitimate tag.

BananaGeekLord First, not all the bands on there are metal. In fact, a decent amount are not. Second, half the genres they use are not actual metal genres. Third, I don't mind a band with female for the vocalist, but the fact that those bands and their fans focus on it only makes the music quite generic and boring.

CGholy Good points.

Censeo I listen to all sorts of metal and I like the female voice a lot. So if I want to listen to metal in general, why should I not use the tag "metal" and if I want to narrow that down to female vocalists, why would I bother that this is not genre specific? Just curious.

CGholy female fronted metal tag is overused.

Marguip I enjoy female voices, but femenine fronted is NOT a genre!

Elintasokas Stupid tag. I agree.
August 2010 -
ayersh "Male fronted" tag is absolutely esential. :D
August 2010 -
Miaaaw ^_^ Héhé, why not? It only depends of the users to make a "male fronted" tag :p And I totally agree that they are a lot of bands with a man and a woman who both are singers for whom the "femal fronted" tag is misplaced.
July 2010 -
nilzzzberghman There should be a "male fronted metal" tag
June 2010 -
RaphX It throws my recommended radio off balance.
May 2010 -
Wonderglue I don't listen to many bands with that tag anymore, and i hate the most tagged like that as well.
May 2010 -
WorldOfOne I find myself saying "femme metal" as well, but that gives the wrong impression soundwise, as if all femme metal is pink and fluffy lol
March 2010 -
PanicAttackWCF By no means is "female fronted metal" the most useless tag, but I just don't see why people bother with it. There's the metal tag and the female vocalist tag and you don't need to be a genius to figure out that a metal band with a female vocalist probably performs metal with a female vocalist. It's redundant.
February 2010 -
Aladin001 When people use this tag, why don't they use "male fornted metal" ??

SaberX Whaha people calling Arch Enemy Gothic Metal fail hard.

PhAntOmEttA I hate the stereotype that FF metal = gothic metal !! this tag makes a wrong opinion 'bout metal with ladies on vocal

DeadlyFred Female artists (lead singers especially) are really *not* that uncommon in metal these days. They might still be in the minority, but there are only two genders competing for the title to begin with so that doesn't say too much. Chicks have always been around to rock out and there are more than ever these days in all kinds of metal, its definitely ridiculous to make a genre off that fact alone. Then again, people call any band with a chick and some keyboards "goth" so, there ya go.

Miaaaw Done! :) The connections are limited to 200 artits. Now, if I want to connect more band, I have to remove some other. Just to warn ^_^!

Sharkuu I agree, just because females are uncommon in metal (actually in music as a whole) doesn't mean that you have to tell us which bands contain female members.

TheWolfGang_de Howldy! Howl do you do? Our "First Blood" EP is new on last.fm and ready for free download. If you like Gothic Rock with influences from Post Punk and New Wave: Enjoy! Goodbite, The Wolf Gang

Silkenfist my personal reason: Because it messes up my last.fm recommendations. I found a lot of good bands here but I keep hating the fact that it is nearly impossible to get all-male bands recommended in genres where the "female fronted" tag runs rampant.
April 2009 -
she_dominates "Seen live" and "favorite" aren't genres either, but they're still valid tags. Just sayin'.

Miaaaw I agree with you that is annoying when this term is used when the female in the band is not the leader, I already thought about that when I made the "connected artists".
July 2008 -
my_eyes_burn great group ! i agree, female fronted metal is not a genre and the tag is nonsense when there are both female and male singers (or even several male singers)
July 2008 -
Miaaaw After I created this group, I was wondering about a "Stop using useless tags" group! ^_^ I made a group about the "female fronted metal" because I listen to metal and I already seen this when I tried to tag [but I never tagged :p]. I feel "concerned" ^_^. And because for some people, a band is a "female fronted metal" one, for other people it isn't even if a female sing in it [because it's not "symphonic"]. And also because I saw the tag on the cd's I buy =D There are many reasons for which I created this group so it doesn't matter if it's pointless or not :/ [and anyway, it's too late ^_^].
July 2008 -
Fulvian While I agree that it's not a genre, the fact that a tag isn't necessarily a genre is already enough to prove how pointless this group is. Have You ever used Last.fm tag radio? if You have, You'd notice that there are LOTS of non-genre tags out there, and RIGHT NOW there ARE millions of people who are listening to those non-genre tags (they wouldn't listen to those tags if those are not useful). Now, how about forming a group to encourage people to stop using tags like awesome, amazing, godlike, best, better than radiohead, fucking hot as hell, :3, seen naked, female vocalists, check it out, everything, music, crap, shit, etc. etc.? BECAUSE those tags aren't musically informative, wouldn't that be c00L? ;)

Miaaaw About Arch Enemy, I entirely agree with you :p
