We think female fronted metal is not a genre.

Saying a metal band is a female fronted one is not very informative, musically speaking. Indeed, this tag...

Why have I created this group?

- because female fronted metal is not a genre;
Saying a metal band is a female fronted one is not very informative, musically speaking. Indeed, this tag includes a lot of genres like doom metal [Draconian], symphonic [Epica], gothic [Lacuna Coil], nu metal [Otep], melodic death [Arch Enemy]...

- because I think this tag has no use at all;
It's far more useful to describe the music we're actually listening to because, even if we want to hear a female voice, Angela Gossow [Arch Enemy], Otep Shamaya [Otep] or Tairrie B. [My Ruin] don't sing like Floor Jansen [After Forever], Andrea Dätwyler [Lunatica] or Anette Olzon [Nightwish]...

- because now it's even written on CDs I'm buying to describe the bands [like on the eponymous album of "After Forever": "best female fronted metal band from Benelux"] and I think it's not a good idea to use this term irl.

If you agree with these points or have your own reasons not to like it, feel free to join! :) [whatever the genre of music you are listening to ;)]

I can understand that this tag it's quite useful for some people [... for a lot of people ^_^] but if the reasons for which I created this group make you add a genre between female and metal, it's already a good thing! :)

Please, don't join the group just to say that you find the tag useful. If you come here and don't join or if you are using this tag, it's sufficient to show you don't agree. It's just annoying for me to kick you...
Thank you! :)

    the genre is about the music. not the vocals, not the lyrics, not the ideas. there is no such thing as " female fronted","male fronted", "viking metal"..and other stupid tags.

    Does it really matter what gender the vocalist is?

    Interested in discussing this? Okay: first point, not all of the bands tagged as are metal. Is it therefore wrong to use that tag and tag radio? What if I like both rock and metal and the tag therefore serves my needs perfectly? Second, what? Third, you are generalizing about the music and you are generalizing about its fans. I like quality music with female vocals. If the music doesn't please your taste, that's your problem. If you are really concerned about how this tag has come to represent a misplaced focus, then I think you are worried about mere symptoms of a disease in metal culture's perception of women. For that matter, the mainstream pop music culture adores singers far above musicians. Tags result from these things, and arguing about them only results in unjust attacks on the innocent: those of us who use this tag because it's a legitimate tag.

    First, not all the bands on there are metal. In fact, a decent amount are not. Second, half the genres they use are not actual metal genres. Third, I don't mind a band with female for the vocalist, but the fact that those bands and their fans focus on it only makes the music quite generic and boring.

    Good points.

    I listen to all sorts of metal and I like the female voice a lot. So if I want to listen to metal in general, why should I not use the tag "metal" and if I want to narrow that down to female vocalists, why would I bother that this is not genre specific? Just curious.

    ^_^ Héhé, why not? It only depends of the users to make a "male fronted" tag :p And I totally agree that they are a lot of bands with a man and a woman who both are singers for whom the "femal fronted" tag is misplaced.

    I find myself saying "femme metal" as well, but that gives the wrong impression soundwise, as if all femme metal is pink and fluffy lol

    By no means is "female fronted metal" the most useless tag, but I just don't see why people bother with it. There's the metal tag and the female vocalist tag and you don't need to be a genius to figure out that a metal band with a female vocalist probably performs metal with a female vocalist. It's redundant.
