  Of course everyone is free to think whatever they want, but I don't blame Last.fm for their radio silence about this issue much like I don't blame those represented by the RIAA or MPAA. Opinions shouldn't jeopardize jobs, but image is always a priority. Complicit or not, it's the leaders of this profits over free speech movement that are threatening the Internet as we now know it, not those that work for them.

  Part I. Most of the inner workings of the US government happen without much notice by most. The backlash to these censorship proposals is extremely uncommon and that's why a number of politicians ultimately changed their stance. Shine a light on the roaches and they tend to run. I truly believe most proposals end up taking the 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine' configuration. Meaning some Representatives probably supported these proposals (SOPA/PIPA) without even understanding what they were really about. The thing is, most people do something called living their life and mostly worry about that as well they, we, should. Given time, most politicians probably think this flavor of the moment uproar will subside and a new, slightly tweaked proposal with a different name will be pushed through with hopefully little notice by the general public.

  Part II. There are very polarized points of views with regards to this issue and this is no doubt just the beginning not the end. And in my opinion, any chance of a compromise vanished when these oppressive proposals were unilaterally unleashed on us all.

  I've heard that the founder of Megaupload has a good deal of legal backing, and will battle it out in court. Obviously, nothing about file hosting sites is inherently illegal. It will be interesting to watch.
