Stats Ideas

  • It may be impossible to programme: My idea is a tool that creates a chain of all the artists you listened to (optimally the artist you listened to in the last 3 months) ordered by similarity.

    Example:
The only artists you listened to are Interpol, Joanna Newsom, The Smiths, Grandaddy, Jeff Buckley, Blonde Redhead, Joy Division and Sigur Rós. The tool would now create a chain of these artists based on the similarity between them. That would look like this..

    Joanna Newsom
    Jeff Buckley
    Grandaddy
    Blonde Redhead
    Interpol
    Joy Division
    The Smiths

Now, Sigur Rós doesn't fit into the chain. The only similar artist to Sigur Rós would be Blonde Redhead. So maybe it would make more sense to display the artists in a map (e.g. like this: http://www.dimvision.com/musicmap/ or http://audiomap.tuneglue.net/ but without the expand-thing).
I hope you can understand what I tried to explain. ;)
Another question is the use of such a tool..

  • Would it be possible to create an app that displays what artists/albums/tracks you're a top listener of?

See the "Artist Fan Rank" script in Greasemonkeys.

Did I hear that right? Mondegreens - for the misheard word.

  • user/artist generator

ok, what I would like to do is this.
Go into one of my groups, see the top artist of the week (for example: John Coltrane), I'd like to then see the list of what users in the group listened to that artist that week. So in other words, I'd like to cross-check which members of a particular group listened to a particular artist. Is this possible? thanks.

  • I've been reading through this thread pages, but I'm getting impatient so here's my idea:

Calculate how much you represent, in percentages, compared to an artist weekly charts.

You know like if Band X had 100 plays this week and I played them 45 times, I'd represent 45%.

Don't know the viability of that, seeing that charts get generated on different days according to user, such and such. But it'd be nice if someone could figure it out :)

  • Even if that were worked out, unless they're an obscure band, the calculated percentages are likely to be <1%.

A better calculation for Music Variability than AEP and Long Tail?

I don't know whether this is the right place or whether something similar has been suggested before, but if you're familiar with the AEP and Long Tail values, you'll have probably noticed that they don't really do justice to a user's listening habits, and using them to compare to user's is a very blunt tool!

I suggest a new method, the OEM.
This method generates a percentage value based on your top 50 artists [because a calculation with 500 isn't easy by hand!], and allows for cases such as a user who listenes to 50 artists only, but the same amount, having an AEP of 5 (maximum) but long-tail of 0% (minimum)! Or a user who has an AEP of -11 (very low) but a long tail of 85% (very high)!

If you have time, look at the article I wrote here.
It's quite long, and maybe not clear, but I just want to know if there's interest in this, before I ask someone who knows something more than me about computers to write a program to automatically generate this.

Please reply to the article/here/message me with your thoughts.

    Thank you.

  • someone has probably already suggested this, but how about something that can predict your average songs per day etc.

Ie if I am currently averaging 100 per day, what effect will this have on my overall average.

The thing I am most interested in with this is being able to know how long my current average will take to affect my overall average to a specific number (say, 100 per day, based on a starting average of 44, total time of 2 years membership, currently listening to 150 tracks per day) etc.

    OR

what number of songs i need to listen to per day in a specific period of time to make my current average reach a target average.

    thanks

Huh, how do you get the "daily average" of something measured with the unit of "per day", I'm guessing you mean that you want a script that works out how many tracks you listened to on a particular day, then compares that number to your calculated average?

  • Is there a way to see how many similar artists you have with a user? Not just the rank the taste-o-meter gives you, but exactly how many artists you share?

you can do it with the compatibility rating option in last.fm extra stats:

    http://www.last.fm/user/C26000/journal/2006/07/30/195693/

  • Someone a while back came up with the idea of ranking bands by dividing there number of plays by the number of listeners low numbers mean people who listen don't listen much. i.e. radio head has 94,664,516 plays and 1,327,156 listeners as so has a number of 71.33 because people who listen to Radiohead listen to a lot of radiohead. on the other hand people who listen to Nurse With Wound has a score of 11.41 because people who listen to them listen to a lot less of them.
proposal a stat called Taste (in a tounge in cheek way) which is the sum or mean of the (plays / listeners) of your top 50 bands.
A low score would mean most people do not agree with your taste even in obscure artists.
    -Jake
    p.s.
according to an informal survey I took most "bedroom" bands that promote on last.fm have scores of less than four.

  • Is there a tool to tell you what track was your ___ track? So you could search 1,000th track, 10,000th track and such and find out what you were playing when you reached that count? I'm not describing it well at all, but that would be super cool.

xemper recently wrote a journal about that

    http://www.last.fm/group/Stats/journal?action=display&entryid=712931

anyway it's not possible because the last.fm webservices don't provide the full history of tracks the maximum detail avaliable in the webservices is weekly charts.

  • I think it would be awesome if there were a way to see the similar albums of an album, I'm not trained in Progamming, but when you think about it all you have to do is extract the similar tracks of all of the tracks from an album and extract the albums from each of those, and see which albums are the most common similarity of the tracks from the album. Though, as far as I can see there is no way to see what album the tracks are connected to on the web services, so that might put a little bit of a damper on the chance for similar albums.

  • TAG CHARTS

I know so little about programming, but love watching trends come and go.

Who here knows of a script that measures change in tags over time (probably by adding up the top 10 Artist listens of the chart or something along these lines.

Presentation-wise, it could be done stockmarket style :P "POP is up 11% this week in anticipation of the latest Madonna album"...or whatever.

I just dream of the day I would see tag trends done yahoo finance style :) or even better...gapminder/motion charts style!!

    !!!

    ---
on a rather unrelated note, I wish artist plays would show you how many are made per week as well...

    ___

please someone out there!! TAG CHARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PM me if you know a solution or are willing to come up with a script or something...

you can do something similar to what you said using last.fm extra stats, look at what I did with it

you can do them with the program, but it took around seven hours to download all the required data !!! that's a lot!! you have tons of different artists in your charts, way more than normal!, do it once and you can play with tags, charts and graphs all that you want , don't worry it wont be downloading at maximum all the seven hours, I added pauses between each download, you will be downloading maximum 15 mb of data.

    That's pretty cool :)

But the nature of what i am looking for is a little different. I am looking for a way to count the total plays of the top ten (or whatever number) artists in a tag, then add them up, then compare them over time, THEN compare to other tags. any ideas anyone?

  • Would it be possible firstly :

    1) To see a kind of open mindedness test or AEP for the last year or a set amount of time, rather than for all time because i used to listen to a rather restricted selection of music which i like a lot less nowadays. I know i have had a much more open mind recently than my AEP (2.77) and i would like a stat to tell me this:)

    2) Secondly is it possible to see the OVERALL top listener ever of a particular artist, rather than just in the past week.

    Cheers

you can use last graph for this, it has an option for AEP graphs.

    http://www.last.fm/user/soadize/journal/2007/02/26/4265_last.fm_graph_%28beta%29_-_app_to_generate_graphs_of_your_weekly_artist_playcounts

and if you want to calculate your aep or omi for certain amount of time you can use last.fm extra stats, it doesn't have the omi but it has the diversity rating that is very similar

mm I'm not sure about this, last.fm use to work like this so I think they have this data, but it isn't avaliable to us

  • okay thankyou:)

    i'll try those

  • TBQH I couldn't be bothered reading this entire thread (is there a search function? I couldn't find it) but I would like to see a "Your xth track played" thing if that's possible to get from last.fm. I can't help but wonder what my 100th, 1000th, 5000th etc tracks were...

  • How about an individual-o-meter. It checks your ten (or however many is practical) closest neighbors and counts how many of them also have you as a neighbor. It could also take into account how close a neighbor they were if that added much.

  • I'd like to see a tool that would give me a breakdown of my friends:

    %'s for Age/Sex/Location.

%'s for their Taste-o-meter levels with me.

Then maybe overall top artists and tracks with everyone's charts taken together?

Anything like this out there already?
