Artists/Albums that you are "supposed" to like but are having a hard time.

Anyone have artists that everyone is talking about or are hyping but you just don't 'get it'? This happens to me a lot as I think I know what I am talking about and that I should enjoy what people are telling me is good music, but sometimes.....I just don't get it. I try, but I dunno....

Some lately are: Colin Stetson, The Weeknd (this might be for obvious reasons though) and even people like James Blake.

    Am I alone in this?

Here goes: Kanye West, The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes, Anything by Radiohead after Kid A, and My Morning Jacket

  • HA! I get Kanye and I am a fan of older Decemberists and Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket. Radiohead is a bit of an enigma - good and bad mixed throughout their albums I feel - but more good previous than lately.

Fleet Foxes are alright - they are pretty good overall, but I don't see the crazy hype they get compared to other "folk" bands. I tend to be sensitive about FF due to J. Tillman being 'only their drummer' but his material is better than anything they have done anyway....but I digress....

  • Yes, the Arctic Monkeys bore me. I somewhat agree with Fleet Foxes too. I think they are talented but it all sounds the same to me. It takes me all but 3 songs on the new one to want to switch to something else. J. Tillman's solo work is way more compelling.

Bands I don't get or just plain don't like: Cults. Wavves. Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti. Wild Beasts. Vivian Girls. Lil Wayne.

I feel like a lot of people act like they are into this shit because Pitchfork tells them they should be.

  • oh yeah

While I think there's a measure of talent involved, I couldn't be more "meh" about Vampire Weekend.

  • @Cap - agreed, Ariel Pink & Wavves for sure - they are so over-rated (or I should say over hyped) that I don't even think of them as makers of music anymore.

Not being schooled in Hip Hop or Rap I would probably agree with Lil Wayne - from what little I have heard. But don't get me started on Odd Future/Tyler the Creator stuff.

  • Got another, Animal Collective. For the most part....really??

    Fleet Foxes

I have been pondering over the Fleet Foxes, I really loved them, well I still like them. For me they were like a gateway drug to more substanial folkiness.

Animal Collective are okay, but much prefer Yeasayer

  • But What About Slowcoustic Artists You Don't Get?

I find it totally unsurprising that people in the folk forum don't care for many hip-hop and indie rock superstars, but what kind of slow/acoustic music do you not get?

Personally, I tend to be biased in favor of Americana inspired folk music so a lot of the draw of British folk music is beyond me. I also can't stand Paul Simon for some reason.
