Description:
A group for fans of the Shibuya-Kei musical movement, spearheaded by acts like Pizzicato Five, Flippers Guitar, Cornelius, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Kahimi Karie...
Shibuya-kei was one of the biggest movements in Japanese pop in the 1990's. Some consider it to be dead now, but its influences linger on. The name stems from the Shibuya district in Tokyo, a young and 'hip' district where record stores proliferate.
Some of the greatest and most influential "classic" Shibuya-kei bands were (and in some cases still are) Flipper's Guitar, Pizzicato Five, Cornelius, Kahimi Karie and Fantastic Plastic Machine.
These bands would frequently blend musical and visual elements from a variety of western pop styles from the 60's, 70's and 80's, such as french pop, bossa nova, disco, Bacharach-esque songwriting, dance music, hip hop, etc. The results would often have an intense energy and freshness to them that set them apart from the works that inspired them.
While "classic" Shibuya-kei is arguably something of the past, much of the Japanese pop being recorded today draws clear influences from it. Thus, the label "Neo Shibuya-Kei" is being used to describe some of today's artists.
Feel free to discuss and post journals both in English and Japanese! 英語がいいです、日本語もいいです!
