    Clarifying ScrobblePod's Device Scrobbling Ability

    Hey guys,

I've noticed some confusing around these parts as regards to how to get ScrobblePod to scrobble devices when they are synced to iTunes. To enable this functionality, check the preference 'Only scrobble if iPod was synchronised in the last 0 hours'. Note the '0' especially. Using the Growl preferences, you'll be notified if everything worked shortly after the device has synced to iTunes.

Update: works fine on ScrobblePod 0.73, iTunes 10.5, iOS 5, Growl 1.3 (App Store version), and Lion 10.7.2

This method did not work for me until I changed the “Scrobbling is set automatically” selection in the ScobblePod menu to “Scrobbling is now ON”.

    ScrobblePod 0.7.2
    iTunes 10.4.1
    iOS 4.3.5
    Growl 1.2.2
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Ah, yes, so did I. Thanks.

Do you find that after syncing a device, the 'Scrobbling is now ON' turns off—the green light changes to a blue/red light, and consequently songs played in iTunes are cached but not scrobbled by ScrobblePod?

My bad, I worked it out: After you sync your device, ScrobblePod caches scrobbles from your Mac's iTunes. It doesn't submit iTunes' tracks until your device is next synced, so scrobbles can be submitted in chronological order.

  • That doesn't seem to work here. Turned the option to "Only scrobble if iPod was synchronised in the last 0 hours", but when syncing my iPod Shuffle none of the songs are scrobbled. But when I play in iTunes it scrobbles without any problem.

    Any idea?

    Mac OS 10.7.2

    • Make sure your iTunes XML location is correct. It should be 'iTunes Library.xml' not 'iTunes Music Library.xml'.
    • In ScrobblePod's drop down menu, try setting the light to green before syncing.

  • Hmm weird, but the only xml I've got in the iTunes folder is the "iTunes Music Library.xml", and no "iTunes Library.xml".

Renaming it will make iTunes create another xml with the old name.
    Weird or what?

Don't rename it. Are you using the latest version of iTunes?

  • Updated it to last version right now, but didn't solve it.

With the newer version of iTunes—did it create the new .xml file?

  • No, it just updated the old "iTunes Music Library.xml"

  • The library renaming would explain why it hadn't scrobbled in a while. It must have coincided with an iTunes update, but after 10.5.

I don't think the .xml file is your issue. That file is fine, don't worry about it and just make sure ScrobblePod is using it.

Are you 100% certain that your iPod isn't scrobbling? If you're using Growl, you probably are; however, I'll just check that you know that ScrobblePod submits songs in the order that they were played. Hence upon sync, your iPod's scrobbles won't necessarily appear in your recently played list on last.fm (i.e. they'll be further back in your play history).

Personally, I still find ScrobblePod's device syncing confusing. After syncing my iPod, the app sets itself to 'scrobbling automatically'. This automatic mode has never worked for me. I need to manually change the setting back to 'scrobbling is now on' for it to work. In this mode, I then have to play a song in iTunes before all of my iPod's scrobbles are submitted together with that song.

This thread is supposed to clarify how ScrobblePod works. Maybe I'm just stupid.

  • So yeah, I've tried that thing of playing a song and waiting for it to scrobble. No good.

And yes, I've checked the full list, it doesn't appear there (I sync the iPod almost everyday).

    Perhaps I'll just give up.
    Thanks for the help anyway.
