Sharing The Love of Female Voices :)

    HEYA

I want to share girls that are a part of my life. and that sing. :)

Sophie Zelmani - this might be obvious to anyone that has seen my scrobbled top10, but to anyone that has not.. you have to hear this girl. her voice is so emotional, smooth, dreamy..

The Wailin' Jennys - these girls I never get tired of. I can't really explain it well, but I find myself at certain times when I feel like listening to something specific, I just don't know what. in most cases, it turns out this is the answer.

(crappy sound but you can get the feeling)

    --

Ani DiFranco - do I need to say anything? :)

folk, singer-songwriter, female vocalists, indie, alternative

    --

Emilie Simon - pure awesomeness. this chick rocks. different as Ani may be in a way, but completely different. if you aren't used to this kind of music, it may take some time getting used to. but her voice.. wah.

I would really like to see weekly charts reflect the recommendations we will make and get. you know you want to hear it. :)

    Bears care too.

    Madeline

Madeline - I have an incredible urge to delve deep into her music, deeper than I thought possible. her easy sounding songs contain lyrics that you can easily miss.. you start dreaming and time flies.. and you start feeling things you don't feel normally. she reminds me of Ellen Page, the girl that played Juno and "Hard Candy". for some reason both got stuck inside me somewhere..

she released four albums to date and I am soon to buy them all. :)

    yummey jolly

Jolie Holland - got a recommendation a couple of hours ago from a friend. I am listening to the fifth song right now and am already making this recommendation. her style is oddly enchanting, voice somewhat magical. smooth, not powerful. it takes you all kinds of places. it's like the voice itself is alive..you ahve to hear it to understand..

live. a little worse recording, but I think it is a better way to hear her for the first time than her official video.

she is the founder of The Be Good Tanyas, a former member and a frequent guest still.

    buddy & julie

Buddy & Julie Miller - just a few days back, I stumbled upon their latest album, "Writen in Chalk". (march 2009) I have never before heard of any of them. it's like I was struck by lightning. you know what I am doing now? looking for their previous albums. :D it is simply incredible. both have strong ties with Allison Krauss, PAtty Griffin, Emmylou Harris and others.. their duets are awesome. they compliment each others voices amazingly. and as Buddy said, Julie has a childish voice with incredible ammount of emotions and experiences ambedded in it, which turns out into goosebump material. I would advise watching all three youtube vids. :) I am a sentimental bastard, so that is what they will be about. google for more.

Blue Roses - incredible. she is. her music is. her album is. her songs are. all of it. I can't even decide which of her songs I like the most. each and every one of you need to hear her. the style, the acoustic/indie feel, the attitude.. I gotta stop. go and download a track or two from the links below.

Sarah Harmer - I felt like listening some pendulum, so I searched my library and set everything on a playlist. I was playing UT2004 and then there was this one song that wasnt them. I immediately noticed that I nevertheless like it very much. so, later on I searched for it and it turns out to be her song. I appear to have two albums, one her solo, the other with Jason Euringer.. lovely album. I keep listening to it and not getting tired of it. it's this one: Songs For Clem. no playable track, but you can google them. I would definitely recommend her.\o/

Melody Gardot - I can't recall no more, what exactly was the reason I stumbled across her. what I do know is that I know the reason I will be listening to her from now on. she has a certain charm, seductiveness, head in the clouds, .. I feel good when I listen to her. I mean, I feel good otherwise too, just when I listen to her I feel better than good. :) chilled-out. take a listen. not to mention.. she's friggin HOT!!

Moony - to change the flow for a bit. coincidentally, I managed to get my hands on her album Lifestories a few months ago, but forgot to listen to it. a few days ago I did, and it made me come here and write a recommendation. her real name is Monica Bragato and she comes from Italy. despite the type of songs she takes part in, her voice shines. since I can really enjoy music of this type sometimes, in combination with a gorgeous female voice world couldn't be prettier. :) I recommend.

Brigid Boden - Brigid Boden is a singer from Dublin, Ireland.

After a childhood spent in Dublin, she studied dance there and in New York City, culminating in a scholarship to the Dance Theatre of Harlem.[1] She then moved to London to focus on songwriting.[2]

After sending demo recordings to producer and musician Kevin Armstrong, she signed with A&M/PolyGram Records and released one album in 1996, whose lead single "Oh, How I Cry" peaked at #44 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts in 1997 because of a remix by Todd Terry.[3] A&M was absorbed by Interscope Records in 1999, and Boden did not release any new material until 2007, when a second album was released by Universal Records.

I bought this cd one day as I was in our main city in slovenia, waiting for some guy. had a few hours to spend, so I went around and searched obscure music shops. I ended up buying 5 cd's, none of which I had even the slightest clue how they will sound. Brigid Boden - Brigid Boden (1996) was one of them. I am in love with it. with her voice. incredible. I am now trying to get my hands on her new album, Innocence is Not a Crime, but it might take a while. it is practically impossible to find! pisses me off. do yourself a favor and if you can, listen to her.

    Re:

You're a fan of my girls Julie Miller and Pink, so that automatically makes you one of my favorite Last.fm'ers. Nice!

Seriously, Julie Miller is un-freaking-believable. I have been listening to her since the early 90's when she did religious music that was different than the other "contemporary christian" crap on the radio.

I look forward to checking out some of your other girls. . .

thanks miss_awful. am just about to listen to her. :)

I feel like making a new suggestion now. I have been in Iceland for the last few months, being exposed to a lot of different music. The first one I am about to mention has absolutely nothing to do with Iceland. her name is Dezarie.

Dezarie - I went crazy as soon as I heard her song. I was listening to reggae the whole day, and she smacked me in the face with her voice. I can't even explain it. I had to go and find all of her music. I would recommend you do the same. She is amazing.

Russian Red - youtube is at fault for this affection. it feels like she is singing pure emotions, having a uniquely sounding voice, usually only accompanied with an acoustic guitar. I don't say that often, but I would genuinely love to meet her and get to know her. Her music alone has had an impact on my life, I can't even imagine what would happen with the whole package. Try with the music yourself, I am not lying. A Spanish wonder.

P.s Thanks for the Dezarie recommendation, loving her already!! - if you like her you should check out another new obsession of mine Nneka - fave songs are heart vs mind and heartbeat, this whole album is good No Longer At Ease

Nneka Egbuna was born in a small town called Warri in Nigeria in 1981 and used to sing in her school’s and church choir in Nigeria. She says “In my life the only places I really felt secure were and still are in the Music and in the Lord“.

After relocating to Germany she’s been singing “professionally“ for 5 years now. Her influences reflect her younger days in Nigeria as well as her time in the western world as she names famous compatriot Fela Kuti and legend Bob Marley as well as contemporary rappers Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Mobb Deep and Lauryn Hill. After gaining experiences good and bad with several producers and artists, she finally met DJ and Hip Hop Beatmaker, DJ Farhot (Hit Spot Productions) and they are working together for 2 years now. Before that she started hanging out with artists such as „Maskoe“ and „The Chosen Few Crew“ (Short Lord, Sensai Miyagie, Antonio, Seven 30 a.o.) and recorded songs with them. Subsequently they became her posse.

Musically her songs range from deep soulful ballads like her „Confession“ tune to modern reinventions of the UK sound, that „Massive Attack“ once was popular for („Changes“) to funk-driven Hip Hop tracks („Stand Strong“). Even though she sings more than raps, she claims Hip Hop as her primary musical roots and an important source of her inspiration. You can call it Hip-hop Soul, if you want to, but as most real artist, Nneka doesn’t like labels. Even more important for her thoughtful lyrics are her origin and up bringing in Nigeria. „I get inspired when I take a severe look at the things going on in our world today; especially in my country. How people live, suffer and endure pain, politicians and religion. And when I see all that man has evoked and created out of self-centeredness and devotion to material things“, she rants.

I have been neglecting this group, but I simply have to share this find.

    Aoife O'Donovan

Founder of Crooked Still, sang with The Wayfaring Strangers and can be found in Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile album The Goat Rodeo Sessions, she absolutely astounds me.

    A sample:

Search for more. She is amazing.

A few words from her page:
For the past 10 years, Aoife has been fronting the alt-bluegrass/string band Crooked Still, which she formed when she was 18. Despite her young age, Aoife has toured in ten different countries, performed with the Boston Pops and the Utah Symphony Orchestra and has appeared on countless radio and television programs.

Her natural talent for songwriting recently came to the attention of Alison Krauss, who recorded Aoife’s song Lay My Burden Down, which is included on Alison’s album Paper Airplane (2011 Rounder Records) and can also be heard in the film Get Low (2010 Sony Pictures). Aoife’s crystalline voice has also been heard on True Blood (HBO) and Private Practice (ABC).

In June 2010, Aoife released her first solo recording in the form of a limited edition 7” vinyl. Featuring two original tracks, it garnered rave reviews from audiophiles worldwide.
