Welcome to the Rock and Roll Hall of Mediocrity

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.
—Albert Einstein

I love rock-n-roll. I think it's an exciting art form. It's revolutionary. Still revolutionary
and it changed people. It changed their hearts. But yeah, even rock-n-roll has a lot
of rubbish, really bad music.

—Nick Cave

please note: this group is NOT an "anti-mainstream" or "anti-rubbish" music
group. and we are not talking about "good" or "bad" music here. this simply is the
Rock and Roll Hall of Mediocrity,'s group for the celebration of a wide
spread phenomenon in contemporary music production and reception :

mediocrity : the quality or state of being mediocre
mediocre : of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance, ordinary, so-so
(Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary)

that said, mediocrity is not to be confused with what is called 'mainstream'. and
don't get me wrong, it's perfectly okay to listen to everything, including mainstream
music, mediocre music, pop music, etc... i do, because i enjoy it ... every once in a while.

if you want to study mediocrity in music, you are invited to listen to the connected

you might ask : is mediocre music the music of "suckcess" ? ... maybe, but is it the
music that "sucks" ? or is it us ? the music only mirrors what we are up to in life,
true or true ?

but we have a choice. do we set mediocre standards for ourselves, or do we want to
reach for the stars ? it's not about the music, the music is only one of many "tools"
in life.

i define 'mediocre music' compositions and performances that are "very average,
straightforward, and unremarkable", music slightly below average is additionally
imbalanced, music definitely below average (less than mediocre) is flawed,
amateurish and miserable in such a way that truely talented popular artists like,
say, Prince, Brian Eno or Bill Laswell, would have had composed and done it
during their ... :)

we have to confess that many of the connected artists could do better but it seems
they don't hone their talents that much (e.g. Amy Winehouse), only some single
tracks are well done. some connected artists are very talented (e.g. Madonna or
Elton John), but it seems thay can't resist in producing a kind of cheese pop
(maybe because they are clever, they go where the money is : the crowd which by
definition is mediocre. are you one of them ? welcome to the club.)

i have hope. we all can do better.

will we ?

yes we can.

and by the way : i have much respect for David Bowie, personally.

Alec, why on earth do you still have a BIG photo of your daughter on a group called Rock and Roll Hall of Mediocrity? Has she approved? Can she defend herself? Does she even understand all this and that her father is exploiting her on the internet? Child abuse.

I definitely prefer the sort of hipsters who affect a liking to hair metal.

The Ass in the Lion's Skin AN ASS, having put on the Lion's skin, roamed about in the forest and amused himself by frightening all the foolish animals he met in his wanderings. At last coming upon a Fox, he tried to frighten him also, but the Fox no sooner heard the sound of his voice than he exclaimed, "I might possibly have been frightened myself, if I had not heard your bray."

"i know nothing except the fact of my ignorance." (socrates) - so thanks for pointing this out and thx for your appreciation :) whereas most people believe i ADD value to, in fact, because of one group, i SUBTRACT. (sorry for not perusing all the shouts on this group page, but i guess you found out that i'm way more dangerous to's easy-to-control user base than all those people that only know how to shout every once in a while). take care and stay armed, this little hall is nothing compared to the much weirder plans i have in my mind :) :) :)

sophistic so·phis·tic [sə fístik] or so·phis·ti·cal [sə fístik'l] adjective 1. clever-sounding but flawed: clever-sounding and plausible but based on shallow or dishonest thinking or flawed logic Microsoft® Encarta® 2006. © 1993-2005 Microsoft Corporation. So while you say nothing that can be objectively assessed, you appear to validate musical elitism.I think What you are doing is harmful to this site as you are a trying to get people to conform to your own vision of what constitutes good music and doing do in a very persistent, invasive and admittedly intelligent manner. While many others try to impose there opinion but do so poorly, you are so active and prominent on the site that many people are falling for your charms.Frankly transformation of last fm into a class based society with you as the "god" of music is not something that I really want to see.And to follow on from the question you could answer, if the now mainstream artist you listened to was to enter your top 20 you would have to leave your sophisticated tastes group yes?If you all about the music then what does the publics preference for an artist have to do with it ?I fear that you and your sophisticated tastes are all about the ego really.

Alec you use such over worked metaphors and sweeping generalizations in all your explanations that I think you fail to clearly explain anything... certainly to me anyway.I agree that personal attacks are poor debating but exceptions must be made when the debate is about a person. Now I am all about the music here and my behavior does support that, so when a person comes seems to be taking over the site I cant help but take an interest and object. You seem to say nothing tangible but say it with dazzling authority. For example it's not the music that sucks. it's us. it's we who are mediocre. the music only mirrors what we are up to in life, think about it." but we have a choice. do we want to stay mediocre or do we want to reach for the stars ? it's not about the music, the music is only one of many "tools" in life. it's about our standards in life
