Ρεμπέτικα για πάντα

Rembetika has its roots in two musical traditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: the music of the urban Greek social fringes, especially in the Piraeus (often compared to the blues sub-culture in the United States at about the same time), and the cafe aman (Smyrnaika, or Smyrneika) of the Asia Minor cities of Smyrna and Constantinople. The two forms came together after the influx of ethnic-Greek refugees from Turkey in the early 1920s.

Rembetika is often referred to as the Greek blues — not because of the musical style so much as the feeling imbued in much of the music, as well as the favoured topics (sex, drugs, prison, etc.) and the social context of the rembetika sub-culture.

Tagging your music

It would really help with the charts if people could tag their music (at least the artists, if not the individual tracks) in the same way. There has been a lot of discussion of this in various places, but essentially the only way to ensure that we all use the same tags is to use Greek. If you don't read & write Greek, don't worry -- you can just cut and paste from the Music Connections here, or ask in the Shoutbox or Discussion forum. There are many people here who'd be glad to provide the Greek for you to paste in to your player.

    I'm a young filmmaker looking to make a few short videos about young musicians in Greece playing rebetika and laika. Would anybody be able to recommend some artists to me? MySpaces and websites where I can hear their music would be perfect, though if you have contact info as well, that would be a great help.     its called 'blues meet rebetika' recorded on 85'.but its hard to find it even here in greece.stelios vamvakaris has his on page on last fm check his songs.especially fantasia,se ena bar sto missisipi.he also record something with jonh lee hooker when they play together on sweeden.but if you like this kind of mix,check zorz pilali and his alboum theokomodia(espesially-never mousaka on sunday)
