Your queerical revelation?

  • Your queerical revelation?

By which I mean: do you remember the first song that made you say "Oh my god, THIS IS GAY!"? Not the ones you heard for years without really registering; the one that made you realize that people actually write songs about this kind of stuff.

I think mine was "Nancy Boy" by Placebo. I was 12 or 13, and a lot of musical discoveries were happening to me around then, but that song really stands out in my mind. I sought out "The Drowners" by Suede because I read an article that compared "Nancy Boy" to it, and I've clearly spiraled out of control since then. How about you?

I think no one replied to this because no one else can remember theirs!! For some reason, I remember "Rebel Rebel" striking me as ... interesting. And after I came out to myself, I really took note of "I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality" in "Affirmation." LEAVE ME AND DARREN ALONE. IT IS A THING.

You've got the love I need to see me through.
  • I do not remember if this was the first song, I do not think it was, but I remember a male friend of mine playing me "Michael" by Franz Ferdinand when we were in middle school because he thought I would like the lyrics. Yes, I did in case you were wondering.

I think it was Suede's 'Pantomime Horse' and 'Breakdown', but I'm not sure at all. I was somewhere about 14 and it was that time I began turning into Suede-obessed freak . Oh, sweet times. I remember I thought something like wow, that's so exciting, that's like nothing what I've heard before, and that's totally gay, and I love it. Realising rock lyrics can be gay was something absolutely extraordinary, because, you know, guys singing of Anna's and Angie's is a commonplace of rock music, and Brett praising pretty boys, drugs and everything else appeared to be sort of a surprisingly pleasant revelation.
By the way, I could've just passed Brett's lyrics by if there wasn't Butler's gorgeous guitars. I fell in love with Suede mostly because of Bernard's musical genius rather than Brett's perverted lyrics and weird dances in woman clothes.

  • I'm pretty sure "The Drowners" was the first Suede song I ever heard, and when Brett's voice came in I got SO ANGRY, like "WHO IS THIS DYING CAT AND WHY IS HE HOWLING ALL OVER THIS AWESOME SONG? MOTHERFUCKER!" Then I heard "Beautiful Ones" and he sounds even worse in that one. But obviously, I eventually learned to love Mr. Nasal McCrackAddiction and appreciate that what he lacks in uh, tunefulness, he makes up for in emotional power.

The weird dances in woman clothes do help a lot, though.

Dude LOL so I was watching that Brett interview I have uploaded on YouTube earlier and Smeg was like, "Wait, is that HIM talking? What the hell happens when he sings?!" And at first I didn't get what she meant, assuming she was talking about how ineloquent and prattly and permanently-congested he sounds when he mumbles in interviews, but then she clarified that she meant Brett sings like a dying goat, but talks like "a normal dude."

OH ANDERSON, YOU'RE SUCH AN ACQUIRED TASTE. <333

(Bernard Butler does basically make everything awesome, yes yes y'all.)

You've got the love I need to see me through.

I'm listening to "Kashka from Baghdad" right now and I'm loving it! This song really was an advanced way to discuss about homosexuality when Lionheart was released. Thanks for suggestion!
