Songs that inexplicably seem gay

  • Jellyfish's He's My Best Friend, putting aside what it's actually about and dealing with it as if it's two people (as I was about five when I first heard it, so that interpretation's always been my default *sheepish*), edges the razor-thin line between ambiguous and dear god, just admit it lyrics. Which is sort of odd, considering otherwise it totally doesn't and leads to some wonderful confusion. (lyrics)

Or ooo, there's also Of Montreal's Don't Ask Me to Explain , with its speaker being all confused and not wanting to be the first to come out. (lyrics)

Also, does the Magnetic Fields' Papa Was a Rodeo count here? Because I know it's been said over and over that Mike is supposed to be a woman, but it's very easy to miss if you aren't one of those fannish types who read interviews and, as I remember it was pointed out to me at one point, the speaker could be interpreted as a woman as well. (lyrics)

man, it's really queer (at least what's for my own interpretation). but no one can deny that 'he's cinnamon on my toast, we're so close' (awwww!) and 'we could hold hands for hours...' verses mean something more than just a common friendship. *lewd smile*

  • Another one is When We're Old Men by Yellowcard. I'm not entirely sure when it creeped onto my playlist, but it popped up again this morning and surprised me. It could easily be a song between feuding friends (which is probably what it is, from what I've heard), but it sounds an awful lot like a break-up song to me. (lyrics)

I know! *g* And really, any friend you shower with has to be fairly close...

  • I've another one. Camera Obscura's Teenager, although I'm not quite sure -why- aside from how the person being sung to is implied to be a girl in the third verse (with 'I didn't have you done for being... the girl well read') and the rest of the song is about the girl who is apparently breaking the implied girl's heart. I may not be the greatest judge of these type of things though; I tend to read pretty much anything even remotely probable as gay. XD Still, it really sounds like it is here, to me.(lyrics)

I swear I'll stop now. *sheepish*

  • For the longest time, I thought Mr Brightside was sung from the PoV of a terribly jealous/tormented guy whose crush ran off and found some girl. I couldn't understand why people gave me odd looks when I talked about him being jealous of the girl rather than the guy. Much fun was had. XD Honestly, I fully blame the fic I was obsessed with when the song was fresh and new and constantly being broadcast over the airwaves.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - My Lovely Man (lyrics).

who would ever think Red Hot Chili Peppers have anything to do with anything queer? they are the most straight-and-proud band on Earth, which has never stepped onto the land under rainbow.
and this song isn't an exception. when I first saw the lyrics, I was like, 'oh my! just look at this! is it for real or is it that strange thing that occur to your brains when you stay up till 4am every night?' but no, guys. 'My Lovely Man' is a song about a man written in the name of another man. worse still, we should keep in mind RHCP are all-over straight, so the song isn't gay. in fact, it's about band's dead member.
and I know it's absofuckinglutely weird to call one 'brother' and then 'my lovely man' without meaning something gay; nevertheless, the song's no gay.
it's beyond me how can something sounding so gay not be gay when it is so... gay.

  • Wow, you guys, "He's My Best Friend" and "Don't Ask Me To Explain" both look totally gay to me! I put them on the list for the next update.

That RHCP song blew my mind, too! I remember coming across it once and I was like "WHAT? ... No, that can't be right." And then I blocked it from memory, apparently.

I've clearly failed at keeping up with this community, but I've got an almost-gay track! The Bagman's Gambit by the Decemberists. Nothing about it suggests anything gay, except maybe that the narrator and his lover enjoy a tryst in a public bathroom. And you know, heterosexual people do that, so that doesn't leave much of a case. I just really want it to be gay, because let's face it: it'd just be better that way. (Lyrics)

The Piccadilly Trail by The Style Council (lyrics).

The Style Council should be added to the List of Bands that Inexplicably Seem Fauxmosexual. they're at the top my Weekly Fauxmo Songs list, too, apparently. really. they're great.
what's for the aforementioned song, I luv it for there's no straight (he-he) queer allusions, but you can easily make out it's GAYGAYGAY. after all: Piccadilly, dude! we all know well what often happens at Piccadilly. right, bad affairs that sometimes end up like 'The Piccadilly Trail'.

If I Were A Boy by Beyoncé (lyrics).

Ahem... Well, you better have an eye on this one. I mean, it looks slightly more expressive than usually.
Pop divas want to be boys, boys want to be pop divas. O tempora! o mores!

    Sunny by Morrissey (lyrics).

Just because I can't even imagine this being about woman; can you?

    Bicycle Race by Queen (lyrics).

'So I wouldn't give a shit if my bicycle's in bits, I think I'm going to heaven on it...' Why on earth is 'To the Birds' not on Queerics? Bicycles, bisexuals and andersexuality are pretty similar to each other.

  • "To The Birds" seems pretty ambiguous to me, compared to all those songs where Brett basically sings "MEN! GIVE THEM ALL TO ME!" I did use it as a title for a very queer story once, though, so I guess I'm making some subconscious connection.

    Here's what I've got:
O Valencia! by the Decemberists (lyrics). I was listening to it and realized that Valencia is more likely the name of a place than a person, and there are no gender-specific references. Hmmm! Really, though, I just want all of the Decemberists' songs to be gay, because they tell such interesting stories, and it's so fun to find queerics that aren't just the typical relationship fare.

  • February Air by Lights
and the other songs by Lights that I have heard.

    No reasoning behind why.

  • Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I See a Darkness
this is beautiful love song.. lyrics

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You

    lyrics

I guess that's because cars, bands and all things Bohemian are more common amongst boys rather than girls. This sort of sexism doesn't make the song less pretty, though.

  • The very first song that comes to my mind is Dirt by The Stooges. I keep listening to it while reading the lyrics, and I'm so very certain that Iggy sings "f*ck me" instead of (what the lyrics sites suggest) "touch me". Go on, hear it for yourselves!

    There is no god.
  • Ladyboy - Indochine

    Yeah that.

"I like the bible, I like it as a book I like it like the cat in the hat" - Marilyn Manson
"I love Pogo but my phone plan does not include outer space" - Tim Skold
" 'How do you like your chicken?' 'I like it dead' " - Wednesday 13
"The beauty exist in places that aren't necessarily pretty" - Brian Molko
