    Your favourite Prog Metal band

I saw topics for favourite Prog Metal song, and first Prog Metal band, but I thought the obvious topic was missing, so here we go.

Personally its Evergrey without shadow of a doubt, everything about them gets me going.

Worthy of mention are Symphony X, nothing quite like singing along to Of Sins And Shadows or Inferno at the top of your voice in the middle of street :)

  • Fave Prog Metal Band

I would have to go with Pain of Salvation as my favorite but Riverside is catching up fast.

    Dream Theater
    Riverside
    Ayreon
    Pain of Salvation

    in that order

  • Today I would say Dream Theater and Evergrey.

  • Of all-time it is Dream Theater but at the moment it is Porcupine Tree or Ayreon. I also like Symphony X and Fates Warning.

I may have to check out Pain Of Salvation, Riverside & Evergrey.

  • I have to say that it's Pain of Salvation, although I really like Dream Theater too. PoS's music just seems to have more soul to it.

nm. browser seemed to timeout -> double posted

  • Has to be Tool for me, was gonna say Dream Theater but they are not as 'metal', more like prog rock. Closly following is Opeth, and Porcupine Tree deserve a metion too :)

  • Tool
    Dream Theater

    Those are the top two.

I need sanctuary in the pages of this book..

I'd say Symphony X followed by Dream Theater and Opeth.

Motivation: I love Russel Allen's powerful and soulful voice and his solo-album is awesome too because he shows his influences aren't exactly the classic prog-rocker influences.

Micheal Romeo's crunchy(!) guitars that always reminds me of Dimebag Darrel (R.I.P). Awesome songwriting and solos.

Great bassguitarist, more noticeable than for example Jon Myung.

What can I say about the drums... just listen to the live version of Death of Balance!

I'm not too much for keyboards but I like how Pinella really strengthens Romeo's riffing and solos. Also his own solos are cool.

Ayreon is the no. 1 now. I will never get tired of listening it. Then comes Dream Theater, just bought "Images And Words" and I've already listened it about ten times. The third place is divided by Evergrey and Pain Of Salvation.

My alltime favourite band is Pain of Salvation.
Right now I listen a lot to Porcupine Tree and Fates Warning as well.

  • i couldn't name one favourite band. dream theater, tool and pain of salvation top my prog-metal playlist at the moment, but that changes all the time.

  • definetely queensryche... i also like to listen dt, evergrey, symphony x or angra but my admiration to queensryche goes to extremes. not only mey favorite prog band, but definetely my favorite band among all. i hardly find the quality of liyrics that i find in queensryche in other, rush is really unbelievable in this, too. ryche does cleverly draw the line in making a good song in the limits it should and performing talent in instruments. alsa is there any singer that can beat geoff tate?
