I was surprised to find that there were no non-monogamy groups of any kind on Last.fm. So I decided to start one. =P
Actually, I was wrong. There is a polyamory group here. But not all non-monogamous people are polyamorous, so my group still serves a purpose. XD
Non-monogamy is a blanket term covering several different types of interpersonal relationships in which some or all participants have multiple marital, sexual, and/or romantic partners. This can be contrasted with its opposite, which is monogamy (describes an exclusive relationship between two people).
(Note: While this definition of non-monogamy seems to be generally accepted, I believe that there is more to it than that.
For instance, I am polyamorous. Just as my sexuality will not change, I will remain polyamorous regardless of whether I happen to be practicing a polyamorous relationship at any given time. It is a part of who I am. If I am single or dating one partner, I am still attracted to many people and still open to the possibility of multiple relationships in the future. While I am capable of being with only one person, it's pretty much guaranteed that I will have at least one other crush while I am dating someone, and I need to feel comfortable discussing this with my partner without fearing that they will become jealous. I need to know that I have the option of going out with other people if the opportunity arises.
Basically, polyamory is my nature; whether I like it or not, it is an inherent tendency in me, and I cannot change it. I'm not sure if this applies to others, but I thought I would add this disclaimer, anyway. So if you have never been in a non-monogamous relationship, but you are interested in it, please join. Those who have been in non-monogamous relationships in the past are welcome, as well. You don't have to be currently practicing non-monogamy to be non-monogamous.)
Forms of non-monogamy include:
Polyamory, in which participants have multiple romantic partners---always consensual
Polyfidelity, in which participants have multiple partners but restrict sexual activity to within a certain group
Open marriages and open relationships, in which one or both members of a committed couple may become sexually active with other partners
Swinging, similar to open relationships, but commonly conducted as an organized social activity
Polygyny, in which men have multiple wives
Polyandry, in which women have multiple husbands
Polygamy, a term encompassing both polygyny and polyandry
Group marriage (also termed polygynandry), in which several people form a single family unit, with all considered to be married to one another
PolyFamilies, similar to group marriage, but some members may not consider themselves married to all other members
Line families, a form of group marriage intended to outlive its original members by ongoing addition of new spouses
Plural marriage, a form of polygyny associated with the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 19th-century and with present-day splinter groups from that faith. It is also associated with an evangelical splinter group which advocates Christian Plural Marriage
