Internet radio gets a second wind

Internet radio may be saved, for the time being. The Digital Media Association (webcasters) and SoundExchange (record royalty collectors) have reached an agreement to set the royalty cap at $50,000 per service and a minimum of $500 per channel. This is great news for the entire internet radio industry which has been on the brink of extinction over the summer. It is also absolutely a big victory for the SaveNetRadio Coalition who has been pushing Congress and SoundExchange to help keep internet radio in business. Lastly, it's great news for consumers. It would have been a tragedy to see great sites like Pandora, Last.fm, SHOUTcast, and Live365 go under because of royalty costs.

Journal - New-shoe-gazers: A Sunny Day In Glasgow, by champersnova

From the desk of champersnova - journal - New-shoe-gazers: A Sunny Day In Glasgow

    Extract:

In spite of the fact that I really got bored at first listen and put the album on the back burner for a few weeks, all of a sudden I happened to give it another chance thanks to that rainy day in Istanbul. Somehow, rain must have created an association with Glasgow in my mind!! Listening to this stunning debut Scribble Mural Comic Journal for tad of times, I was convinced that these guys were not going to be a comet in my music library.

Journal - Battles in Brighton, by hotchk155

From the desk of hotchk155 - journal - gig review - Battles in Brighton.

    Extract:

Live, Battles suddenly make sense for me. Watching the creation of layers of sound from voice, guitar, synth and a spaghetti of stomp boxes and patch cables reminded me of watching Holy Fuck at work, except that where Holy Fuck build up hypnotic, head-nodding grooves, Battles jar and disorientate, waving a contemptuous shitty stick at such conventions as musical key, time signature and song structure. And they throw in some disturbingly strange noises to boot.

    Journal - M.I.A. - Kala : Kyaa Bhaat Hai!, by Babs_05

    From MY desk! :D - journal - album review - M.I.A. - Kala : Kyaa Bhaat Hai!.

    Extract:

After Jimmy, the album shifts and heads towards Africa. From Hussel (feat. Afrikan Boy) onwards, I must admit, I wasn't sure. Ok, first listen, I didn't sit down throughout the whole album. I mean after a few listens, when I actually started absorbing the tracks. Her mix of bhangra, hip-hop and grime continues, but hereon in, it doesn't shine so much. It's cool, there's no doubt, but the sound is now grubby, tatty, much darker in tone. Think blackened silver as opposed to shiny. Beats are deep and heavy. In 20 Dollar she sings "I put people on the map who ain't seen a map." Some critics have been incensed by her arrogance, but I would just direct them to her attitude, as described at the top of this journal.

Journal - Trail of Dead at Concorde 2 Brighton, by hotchk155

From the desk of hotchk155 - journal - gig review - Trail of Dead at Concorde 2 Brighton.

    Extract:

This time they lived up to their hell-raiser reputation. At first glance Trail of Dead might not look like the meanest bunch of motherfuckers, but you'd not want to bump into them down a dark alley I can tell you. Some memorable moments were Jason Reece teetering on the edge of the stage with a mike, picking up a spotlight that happened to be in the way and smashing it on the floor. Then later, unimpressed with the sound man going AWOL ("Hey, maybe we we should take the fucking night off too" - see below for clip), Conrad Keely hurling a bottle of water into the sound box drenching the mixing desk. Followed by an entertaining mid-song exchange of obscene gestures between towel-brandishing venue staff and the band. And Reece trying to make amends by pouring beer all over his drum kit.

  • Journal - Super Furry Animals- Hey Venus!

From my blog Music Fans Mic and originally written for gigwise

    Extract:
The single, with its soothingly bright chorus, fills you with glee and leaves you swaying graciously with the nearest musical instrument you can find. As for the edgier moments, they make the quieter songs seem insignificant. ‘Noo Consumer’ is bonkers, makes no sense but will get you off your seat, eventually. Leading you towards ‘Into The Night’, sitars at hand, widening their influences. It’s another ambitious pop song that works. The highlight of the record quite possibly, and where the background sounds of the verse could be mistaken for the better days of Morcheeba, the chorus wipes away all your doubts with powerful, poignant guitars.

"And once I knew, I was not magnificent"

Journal - Luke Temple - Snowbeast, by Babs_05

From MY desk, written for puddlegum.net - journal, album review - Luke Temple - Snowbeast.

    Extract:

Temple's voice takes on a quality only hinted at in his earlier work. Over and above everything else it is he who holds your attention. It's an usual and lovely thing, his voice. It's high, but masculine. Full of emotion, yet controlled. I don't think there is anyone else around to compare him with, quite honestly. I'd hesitate to mention Conor Oberst, though I know others will fall over themselves to do so. Conor Oberst is annoying. Luke Temple's voice is a delight.

Exposure - Simphiwe Dana - The One Love Movement on Bantu Biko Street

South African artist Simphiwe Dana is a politically committed singer-songwriter who delivers her messages in the dreamiest jazz-tinged soul. Ethereal harmonies keep you enthralled as she tells you how it is.

Her new album, The One Love Movement On Bantu Biko Street, is released this week and is already streamable in Last.fm. I have tagged it 'my gang', to appear in our featured artists radio.

Exposure - Paul Steel - Moon Rock

Brighton artist Paul Steel kind of reminds me of Mika only not half as annoying. He's got the bounce, the talent, the know-how, but there's one thing he's got that Mika hasn't: he sounds cute. Well he would, he's only 20. Awww! He even tells us his favourite colour in his MySpace. You either have to puke or be charmed.

All that youthful exuberance is barely harnessed in his new album, Moon Rock, out 10 September. Some big names are watching him, nudging him in the right direction. Tony Hoffer, (former producer for Supergrass and Beck), for one. You can hear Supergrass now, can't you?

Journal - Tim Williams: to release When Work Is Done on October 2, by puddlegum

From the desk of puddlegum, journal - album news - Tim Williams: to release When Work Is Done on October 2.

    Extract:

Tim Williams writes desperate ballads and catchy indie-pop melodies, perfect songs to listen to while you stroll around. Williams has a knack for creating autumn-esque music that mimic the feel of leaves skipping along the sidewalk, though, When Work Is Done will be Tim's most aggressive set of songs to date.

Journal - Film School: Hideout on 9-11, fall tour, by puddlegum

From the desk of puddlegum - journal - Film School: Hideout on 9-11.

    Extract:

Greg Berten shared with Puddlegum that Hideout is, “probably more lush and swirly and driving, maybe more experimental in tones as well, than the last album. To me it’s our sound and sentiment, but more realized. There are some female vocals and guest musicians on the album as well, which adds to the diversity.”

Journal - The Innocence Mission: We Walked In Song released in Europe, by puddlegum

From the desk of puddlegum - journal - The Innocence Mission: We Walked In Song released in Europe.

    Extract:

Karen Peris wrote all eleven tracks on We Walked in Song, each with a tinge of sadness and reflection. Karen lost her father in 2006 when she began writing songs for the album. Badman Records writes, “Sometime after the passing of her father, Karen began to write some of the most beautiful and heartfelt material I have heard from the band. I believe she turned to songwriting as a way of coping with this great loss, which was compounded with the loss of her mother a few years ago, and celebrating those she loves in her life.”

Journal - Horse Feathers: recording new album, fall tour, by puddlegum

From the desk of puddlegum - journal - Horse Feathers: recording new album, fall tour.

    Extract:

Jason Ringle explains one of their new songs, Father of Failure:
“I’d written it this spring after one of my best friend’s cousins (who I had also known for quite a while) just had died by his own hand. The song isn’t about that necessarily but I was kind of reacting to it musically nonetheless. The mood of the song is in debt to that incident but the lyrics are a bit more impressionistic. I was combining my own experiences in a way with a made up scenario. It’s something I find myself doing in some of my songs.”

    Sony Ditching Connect Music Service

Acknowledging its proprietary audio technology was a marketplace flop, Sony Corp. said Thursday it plans to shutter its Connect digital music store and open its portable media players to other formats.

In an e-mail sent to Connect users, the service said it would not close before March 2008, but it did not set a more specific date. The company's Connect e-book service for the Sony Reader is not affected.

Sigur Ros release DVD and double CD

Sigur Ros have announced that they will release a DVD and a double CD in the US on November 6.

The DVD titled 'Heima' (meaning "at home" or "homeland") features a series of free concerts the Icelandic band played in their homeland during summer 2006.

Highlights include a previously unreleased performance of 'Guitardjamm' filmed inside a herring oil tank in the far West Fjords, a one-mic recording of 'Vaka' filmed at a dam protest camp, and first-time acoustic versions of 'Staralfur', 'Agaetis Byrjun' and 'Von'.

The double CD is titled 'Hvarf/Heim' (meaning "disappeared/home").

The first disc consists primarily of songs that the band feel have disappeared from their history because they were never released or recorded. They were played acoustically on the road during the summer tour.

The second disc contains live acoustic versions of tracks from all four Sigur Ros studio albums that were recorded in Iceland during summer 2006 and spring 2007.

An exclusive screening of 'Heima' will be held in Akureyri, Iceland on September 14 before it officially premieres at the Icelandic International Film Festival in Reykjavik on September 27.
