Reco of the Week as of Tues 24 July 07

New thing - started last week when I went bananas over Paw Paw and their track Wired OK. Just had to tell the world how great they are so I put them in my sig.

Wired OK video on MySpaceTV. Group: Paw Paw.

So - I thought I'd open the floor for suggestions from the group.

    Criteria:

    * has to be worthy and deserve a nudge in the right direction
    * if I'm putting my name to it, I have to like it (!!)

Other than that, doesn't matter if it's in Last.fm or not, as long as people can hear the whole track, that's the main thing. Video would be nice but not essential. Not fussed about content, but I draw the line at blood and gore.

Doesn't matter about genres, tempo, language, new release / re-release /
rarity, no. of listeners. Main thing is it has to be QUALITY, ie really, really, really good. :D

I will post here when I've decided what the next week's reco will be. If you see I haven't put anything there yet, get in there quick! lol! : )

Reco Of The Week changes every Tuesday.

    ****************************************************************************************

This week's reco is from Ian, who suggested Steel Pulse. They are playing Womad this weekend.

  • Caribou- Melody Day

My reco of the week would have to be a song that songs so familar from the moment you first hear it. It's quite possibly my single of the year so far.
Taken from the forthcoming album 'Andorra', whether this is a standout track or not, 'Melody Day' will make anybody tempted to purchase the full record when it's released next month.

  • The Defectors: Turn Me On

    i love this whole album:

i've been playing it for weeks, and i still can't get enough of it.
perfect combination of the stooges, the doors and something else i can't quite put my finger on. can't recommend it enough(!)

you can find the whole album here.. don't forget you need the p/w to open it ;)

    I'm seriously chuffed

that barefiles is back up and running. Some of the most inventive music being made, for free. Only problem is, a lot of the mixes are from pirate radio, so have annoying MCs on. I'm downloading loads, so I'll reco the good ones.

    Eeeeeep.

    Thanks, guys. : )

Remember the criteria (above). What I need from you is something for people to click on to hear (or see) the whole track.

    So I want a fully-streamable track or a video.

Extra info is useful too, eg url to a Last.fm group, or an event page in Last.fm. etc. Prefer to keep it on-site as far as possible.

Aim for something like Ian's post (above). I had everything I needed there.

Thanks again! And keep those thinking hats on! :D

  • sorry, babs, the defectors aren't streamable yet (not that many listeners on last.fm at all .. yet!) i'll have a think next week and see what i can come up with..

S'alright. : ) Don't forget, uploaded tracks are good, too. (As long as they don't expire within 7 days, lol!).

For example: here is the url for 'White Dove' from the new John Vanderslice. I just nabbed it from a blog:

    http://jv.vendaface.com/Vanderslice.White_Dove.mp3

It's not streamable in Last yet, but if I put that in my sig, people will be able to hear it.

    Yeah?

I don't know how people upload on Q, but I do know how to upload on Putfile, which is quite a good resource as, once the page loads, the track starts playing. People then have a choice either to listen, or download. Seeing as you can download from those Q pages too, I don't see why Putfile should be a problem.

    http://putfile.com/

Obscure is good! No. of listeners doesn't matter. :D

  • oh right then, well my link to the whole album is in the last line of my original post there: it takes you to a music blog, were you have a download link, you just need to remember to use the p/w (given on the blog) to open it once the file is downloaded.

sorry it's not on site, they don't have any music videos on youtube or anything that i'm aware of (not a fan of music videos in general anyway). but the link still works as far as i know, no one's come back to me complaining that they can't get in.

might be a faff without direct instant access, but they are worth the effort, i promise you! :)

Thanks for the link. : ) I tried to d/l it, but I haven't a clue what to do with .rar files, I don't have the right programme to open them, so that's why I haven't listened. :s

But anyway - I only want one track. : ) I need you to cherry pick it so I can point arrows at it. I suppose I could reco a whole album? hmmm. *thinking*.... Only after I've heard it all and feel the same, otherwise I can't honestly put my name to it.

  • the whole album is golden(!!)
but if i had to pick just one track, probably "it's gonna take some time"..
this is fairly compact and does the job for opening most files you'd come across -- right click on the file once you've downloaded 7-zip (i'd recommend scanning anything with anti-virus first, but this file i can verify is safe), then choose 7-zip from the menu, choose extract files, then you will have a box for the password where you can cut and paste it in and the folder will be extracted to the same location as the original you opened with 7-zip.

  • I believe, in Mr. Grieves.

My reco is PlayMr. Grieves by TV on the Radio. It's an A Cappella cover of an old Pixies song of the same name, which I consider to be quite dull in comparison.
The TV on the Radio version has enough atmosphere to drown a fish, it's incredibly eerie and dark, but I also find it to be über melodic and soothing.
The fact that it's A Cappella adds a lot to it, Tunde Adebimpe recorded 28 separate tracks of his own voice, so he's literally got a harmony going with himself.

Here's a link to download the song.

    is this the right one?

i'd prefer to steer clear of downloads. If people click on a track to listen, it's a bit off-putting to then go through another process before they can. Instant is better!
