What Music do wish was on last.fm? Part 2

  • What Music do wish was on last.fm? Part 2

Well we're making progress or last.fm is just naturally gaining new music. Hopefully some of both.

Making this list of what is currently available was a PITA and took quite a while so there are some new ground rules.

    1. Only post Artists and/or Albums, track requests will be ignored.
    2. If you request an artist and don't specify an album, if ONE track becomes streamable the artist is available and it's considered a success.
    3. PLEASE LINK TO THE LAST.FM PAGE FOR THE ALBUM OR ARTIST!!! If the album's not on last.fm link the artist, if the artist isn't on last.fm link to musicbrainz, if they're not on musicbrainz add an entry for them then link that.
    4. If you don't link album/artist I reserve the right to ignore you. I'm not being a dick, I'm being lazy there's a difference.
    5. If one or two tracks out of an album are in last.fm it will be labeled with "Partial" and considered not streamable. Lastfm has a tendancy to link one track from an album to every reference to that track.
    6. I'll try to keep this upto date but like I said it's kind of a pain. After we get a bunch more suggestions I'll probably start a new thread again.

These have been added to the system:

  • Wuthering Heights

Specifically that track, but it looks like technically the album The Kick Inside is not streamable, just that most of the tracks appear on streamable compilations.

    Twin Cinema

I've checked about a third of the list, and that seems to be it.

Velvet Darkness They Fear. It's their classic album and it should be added...

  • I would like some Concrete Blonde - Recollection (especially this album).Concrete BlondeI don't know if that linking worked. I tried to link it but I used that star button. Is that not the right way to do it?

Yup. But A Child's Adventure, undoubtably one of her 3 best albums, is not streable yet :(

EDIT: btw, if you find you've written something wrong ion your message before anyone answers, you might want to try and edit your last message rather than sending another one, since many people will only read the last message and not the complete thread.

** (dynamic list) - 49 entries (and counting)

Since I wouldn't like to be the cause of an unnecessarily long threads, I thought it best to just add the artists/albums by re-editing this message every time. Hope it's ok.

    1. Nits>> Faved albums: Ting, Urk, Hat, Wool, Giant Normal Dwarf. The band has around 20 albums and is massive in Holland. I've contacted the group a few days back to enable me to upload streams from freely downloadable uncopyrighted recordings (concerts, demos etc) they've approved in the past. But the real deal depends on Sony Music. (1,296 listeners to date)
    2. Takio Ito / Takio Ito & Takio Band Sony Japan
    3. James Bowman Hyperion
    4. Matti Caspi Hed Arzi / NMC
    5. Arik Einstein Recorded in almost every Israeli label
    6. Habiluim NMC
    7. Fretwork added to radio
    8. Two Nice Girls. They have their moments.
    9. The Hilliard Ensemble. EDIT: 2(uncool) track are streamable (used to be 1). For a brilliant ensemble that has 799 listeners on its statistics. EMI Classical and other labels.
    10. Jerusalem Quartet. According to LastFM: 1 EMI album, 2 Harmonia Mundi, 0 streams.
    11. The Zappa issue
yeah, I know some bits are streamable, but, I mean, c'mon! Just look at the number of plays on these (or just check any Frank Zappa musical forum). These albums simply cannot be ignored:
    11.1 The Yellow Shark
11.2 Sheik Yerbouti. One track streamable from the album - the crappy 7" and the poppiest piece of crap Zappa's ever produced.
11.3 Apostrophe (') or Apostrophe' / Overnite Sensation - only half is streamable (probably from some anthology/compilation).
    11.4 Lumpy Gravy
    11.5 Jazz From Hell
11.6 Cheap Thrills 1 track added to radio
And the fact that one 1 track from a 20+ track album is streamable causes the green icon to appear on its name, stating it's streamable is just absurd.

    And speaking of which -
    12. Kick in the Eye. Don't care why, don't care how, all the albums it appears on have MOST tracks streamable. but this track is not to be ignored, by no means. added to radio
    13. Solid Air - again, half the album is streamable. But it's his best work - ever.
    14. Joe Jackson (I'm half shocked about this). MCA limited catalogue added as Joe Jackson & Joe Jackson Band
    15. Nnenna Freelon Sony/Columbia
    16. Fleischmann Sony Germany
    17. Verdone Gerini Cecchi Gori Music, published by Sony Italy
    18. The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions or The Life Aquatic - Studio Sessions or Life Aquatic Sessions (yup - all are listed, album art and all), or The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, which has 3 track on preview. Seu Jorge made 10 extremely cool David Bowie covers, which would be such a shame to go to waste... added to radio
    19. Dag Columbia

Furthermore, I think it would be in LastFM's best interest to state, say in the "reccommendations", permanent links to renowned labels with some international appeal (mine, for instance, isn't) who decided to have their complete catalogue streamable through the site. It's something that should not be accidentally found by users, as it's important to the site's growth (and to the label's own listening statistics, of course).

    Moving on:
    20. Madra Mute U.S. The girls made 1 decent album. Great even. 174 listeners to date, #1 on the UK album charts at the time (which is unique for an a-cappella medival/renaissance album). They deserve the re-push.
    21. The Queen in Waiting (disc 1)+The Queen in Waiting (disc 2)
and/or Jazz to Soul (disc 1)+Jazz to Soul (disc 2) -- Because sometimes an artist's early works have more than Walk On By to them, great as it may be.
    22. Lemon Demon (5,476 listeners to date!)
    23. In Visible Silence China (384 listeners to the album alone, 0 tracks streamable).
    24. Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen/Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen - great jazz bassist, have worked with the best. IS probably one of the best himself.
    25. Goons/The Goons/The Goon Show/Goon Show BBC Radio. 3 shows added for The Goons. cool! need more.

And please - add an automatic artist name moderation system!!

    26. Soul Mining
    27. Neville Brothers (Not necessarily my cup of tea, but it bugs me there are no streams for them. Dunno why). added to radio
    28. A Child's Adventure Island (Partially streamable from artist's compilations' upload)
    29. Churchill's / הצ'רצ'ילים
    30. The Platina / הפלטינה
    31. European Jazz Trio
    32. The Assembly Mute. It's not much, just the one 12" single (Never Never). oh yeah
    33. Nocturne Polydor / Wonderland EDIT: (5 tracks streamable)
    34. Duets MCA (1987)
    35. Rickie Lee Jones Reprise / WEA big time
    36. New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble (1,727 listeners to date)
    37. Nina Hagen Sony (1 track streamable)
    38. OPERA
Apparantly, there are no (or next to null) operas or opera bits on LastFM. (aside from the odd "famous arias" compilations). There are quite a few opera recordings - not all from major commercial labels, so I see no reason not to find a nice opera label and/company and post its recordings.
Several examples of operas NOT streamed here:
38.1 Carmen (e.g., Carmen (Callas, Gedda, Guiot, Massard, Prêtre) (disc 1) & Carmen (Callas, Gedda, Guiot, Massard, Prêtre) (disc 2) - EMI Classical. CD2 is not even on the database yet!)
    38.2 Faust
38.3 ANY Mozart opera will do.
    (to name but a few)
    39. G. Love / G. Love & Special Sauce Okeh (there are probably more pseudonames/typos/variants to him, but combined he's got over 16,000 listeners, which shold count for something. Oh yeah - and 1 measly streamable track).
    40. Kenny Barron various labels, mainly Verve - truely a jazz great
    41. The Honeydrippers, Vol. 1 added as Nine Lives [Digital Version] (btw album names that have square brackets in them can't be linked to)
    42. The Muppets
    43. Hans Christian Andersen
    44. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard Capitol. It's a brilliant album well worth of the old genious we all knew Sir Paul to be. added to radio
    45. Sail Away Rhino / Wea added as Sail Away+ - silly tagging typo (the "+" stands for an extra space after album name), in the remastered version with extra tracks. Thing is all tracks have "(Remastered LP Version)" in their names, so there's no way to find them or have them go to the top of the charts unless streamed, which is kind of, well, irritating: Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear (Remastered LP Version)
    46. Recent Songs Sony
    47. One Second (1 track streamable) Fontana Int'l
    48. Winelight (or Winelight, to name just the 2 most popular appearances of this album in the database)
    49. Walls and Bridges. 1 streamable track. measly. added to radio

EDIT 17/5/07: a lot has changed. Many streams were added lately. Apparantly this group actually does the trick, which is cool.
Only drawback now is that it's not immediately apparant, since artist/album preview/stream icons do not appear with the links :)
