  • Great desk! I think it was done under Prog-rock so far.

    You must listen Art Bears!
For me their best is Winter Songs (1979)

The Origin of the Rock In Opposition Movement

    Origin.
'Rock in Opposition' or abbreviated RIO was a movement representing a collective of progressive bands, in the late 1970s, who united in their opposition to the music industry that refused to recognise their music.

It was initiated by English avant-garde rock group Henry Cow in March 1978 when they invited four mainland European groups to come to London and perform in a festival called "Rock in Opposition".

Line up of the Rock In Opposition festival.
Univers Zero actually spelled as Univers Zéro, but not in common last.fm use
    Stormy Six
    Etron Fou Leloublan
    Samla Mammas Manna
    Henry Cow

The Evolution of the Rock in Opposition Movement.

    Evolution

While "Rock in Opposition" was never intended to be a formal organisation, the festival did generate "a lot of press around the world".
This prompted the five bands to discuss future plans and in December 1978 they met at Sunrise Studio in Kirchberg, Switzerland to reconstitute Rock in Opposition as a collective.

By this time Henry Cow no longer existed as a group, but as RIO's prime mover its former members still actively participated.

RIO's primary aim was to represent and promote its members. It was decided that membership should remain closed and small, although new members would be welcome provided they adhered to:
    1. "musical excellence" (as evaluated by the collective);
    2. worked actively "outside the music business";
    3. and had a "social commitment to Rock".

Using these criteria, three new members were elected:
    Art Zoyd
Art Bears made up of former Henry Cow members
    Aksak Maboul

    Other Rock in Oppostion festivals.

A second RIO festival, organised by Stormy Six, took place between 26 April and 1 May 1979 at al Teatro dell'Elfo in Milan, where all seven groups performed, the original four (minus Henry Cow) plus the three new groups.

During the festival, the RIO members met formally again to discuss the way forward. However, despite some constructive discussion, disagreements arose between the groups regarding RIO's role and matters were left unresolved.

Two further RIO festivals took place in Sweden and Belgium, but no new meetings, and by the end of 1979, RIO as an organisation had "quietly slipped away".

    The RIO Reunion.

A "reunion" festival took place in France in April 2007. The spirit of the original festival was preserved in that only artists of quality, innovation and the willingness to be "in opposition" to the commercial music industry performed.

The lineup at this event included:
    Magma
    Faust
Peter Blegvad Trio (including Chris Cutler)
    Present
    Zao
    Mats Morgan
    Guapo
    NeBeLNeST
    Salle Gaveau
    GMEA

    Rock in Opposition, the Genre.

When RIO ceased being an organisation, its name moved into the public domain where it took on the meaning of a music genre.

While RIO never referred to a type of music (the original 5 bands were quite diverse musically), it became used by listeners, musicians, and distributors to classify bands (generally bands that appeared at the RIO festivals or bands related to or derived from the original RIO bands).

Bands familiarized with the RIO movement and genre today include (amongst others):
    Thinking Plague
    Present
    Miriodor
    Ahvak
    NeBeLNeST
La STPO La Société des Timides à la Parade des Oiseaux
    Klimperei
    5uu's
    Guapo
    U Totem

The term "RIO" today is almost synonymous with Avant-Progressive Rock, Experimental rock and Zeuhl.

might want to check out some Jefferson Airplane, excellent female fronted psychedelic rock...
Art Bears, Dagmar Krause (vocalist of Slapp Happy, Art Bears, Henry Cow etc...) and perhaps Comus if psychedelic folk rock is the thing your looking for...

the mentioned bands are all female fronted, Slapp Happy like, but it seems like an uncommon sound. I've been looking for some of Dagmar Krause's solo and early work, but seems hard to get...

also recommended; Shub Niggurath (the French one)... their album 'Les Morts Vont Vite' brings a dark zeuhl sound, think Magma meets Guapo.

and also recommending Guapo, a more contemporary/post-zeuhl sound.

Their album 'Five Suns' is quit epic...

    Änglagård - Epilog
Art Bears - The World as it is Today
Art Zoyd - Musique Pour L'odyssee
    Catherine Jauniaux - Fluvial
David Thomas and The Pedestrians - More Places Forever
Fred Frith & René Lussier - Nous Autres
    Henry Cow - Unrest
    Samla Mammas Manna - Kaka
    Slapp Happy - Ça Va
Shub Niggurath - Les Morts Vont Vite
    Univers Zero - 1313

100 great RIO albums; count: 11

    Notes:

David Thomas was never really a paid-up member of the RIO movement but the prominent input of Lindsay Cooper and Chris Cutler on this and his previous solo album lends a distinct RIO feel. And I'll take any old excuse to get David Thomas into a list.

The Catherine Jauniaux album has Tim Hodgkinson doing much of the instrumental side of things and is a somewhat more melodic take on the Art Bears Brecht/Weill thing.

Ça Va was the reunion album that Slapp Happy put out in the 90s and is well worth tracking down.

Could have included a dozen Fred Frith albums but this is probably the one I like most. A diverse and mostly rock/song oriented live affair.

The World as it is Today just shades it over Winter Songs for me.
