Riot Grrrl Desk:

  • I think Le Tigre are indeed even catchier than Bikini Kill (both are Kathleen Hanna bands), seeing how they're not quite so noisy. Moving on from BK and leaving that aside I'd go to Bratmobile's Pottymouth and Calculated by Heavens to Betsy (featuring Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker - S-K are great also, their output's been consistently good, which can't be said for everybody on this scene or another ... Kaia Wilson maybe; both Team Dresch albums are definite riot grrrl/queercore favourites of mine-- incidentally, all that's been mentioned in this bracket is a little more melodic, less screechy than BK, Bratmobile et al).
Less feministically inclined and only taking sound inspirations from these bands were Jack Off Jill (whose singer Jessicka went on to form the shoegaze-inspired Scarling., a cotton-candy-and-razorblades-style acquired taste that personally I adore and recommend, though I see why some people would consider them cheesy and/or artificial). Especially their early(ish) material is highly addictive - check out Humid Teenage Mediocrity.

  • are The Amps riot grrrl?

    stab me 'til i cum
  • I don't think The Amps explicitly identified with the scene and its ideals, but they definitely had the lo-fi/DIY sound aesthetic down pat. Hmm, I'm not sure, they don't seem influenced by or themselves an influence on the movement at all (other than, say, Helium, whom I mentioned at the noise pop desk earlier - their sound came from a relatively different corner of the alternative rock continent, but they had a strong feminist touch especially in their early days), and yet I can see them appealing (muchly!) to fans of the sound.

Of all the things I've heard, I'd rank them :

    Babes In Toyland - Fontanelle
    Team Dresch - Personal Best
    Bikini Kill - Singles
    Le Tigre - Le Tigre
    Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped
    --
I'd heard Scarling - Bummer (and didn't like it)..so I skipped the later artists.

I've changed the project to "feminist".

Well, I've not done this before but I'll just go ahead and say it... Ludus and Au Pairs. And hmm.. would The Dresden Dolls count? Also Ani DiFranco for sure. Patti Smith? They're all political at least. Take your pick of whatever you consider the best albums. I'm too lazy. Personally my favorite girl band would be The Organ. They were the closest thing Canada's had to a feminist band, from what I'm aware, more so than Tegan & Sara.. both are only really feminist by association though.

The way you do it is you copy and paste the list, then you fill in whatever you want on the list. Go here to see how to give you choices a different color:

I was on Ludus' artist page, and they've been on an insane number of MAC lists, huh? Well, one more couldn't hurt, considering their critical and criminal awesomeness-to-scrobble ratio. Stil far from 20,000! Besides, Linder Sterling was probably the most crazy and cool feminist ever.
