I hadn't read it, but in any case I tracked down the issue in question yesterday, it's dated June 23. Thanks for the effort, though!

NME is 5€ in Germany, which is fair enough. Half the time extras et al are missing, though (CDs and the like), but they were even when I had a subscription for a year!
I'm guilty of reading Spex as well! :D It's so pretentious, the new staff even more than the old ... but they always dig up subjects nobody else would have thought of covering, their interviews can be completely useless but often enough are far more interesting than the promo-paper-rechewing of other publications - and the CDs are wonderful, about the only magazine samplers around on which I regularly discover things I hadn't known before.
I suppose it would technically be possible to find old Sounds magazines, though only at the usual locales, i.e. on ebay ... the Musikexpress back issues archives only go back to '96, and the two were put together (and ME-ised) in '83 already. Anyway, I don't know about Turkey, but on German ebay issues from the seventies and eighties are usually between four and ten euros at buy-now. If you're lucky you'll also come across some on flea markets from time to time, but the trouble with good music press is, those that followed it then are not the kind to throw it out for nothing (like people would with their old Bravos or something).

I agree on TIH! I quite like it, but it's nowhere near as spliffing as the bouncy cheese-pop days.

that's exactly the idea... as soon as we're done with the underrated ones...

Ah, I don't like the terms 'underrated' and 'overrated' ... they're the new 'in' words, every band with less than 50,000 scrobbles on here is underrated and every band above that is overrated :D

Linoleum, I remember at the time people saying "we don't need another Echobelly". Hell, why not?! I'll have as many Echobelly's as I can eat (thanks very much).

True that! (Similar things happen to Salad, who supposedly sound like Sleeper. I don't know, technically I suppose they might, but they lack the Louise Wener spirit ... but they're still fun!) Besides, there could be a dozen or more Genes and Jamess and Raymondes and Marions and ... oh, wait, there are dozens of that sort! How come there were so few complaints about that? Clearly britpop is more chauvinist than commercial hip hop.

i guess you might say this for many music magazines. yes, spex sometimes seems pretentious, but just as you pointed out, they cover many interesting bands and issues. and yes, the CDs are wonderful. one thing that bugs me is, the "duzen" in the interviews. i just don't like it.

List: Albums, Critically Bashed Upon Their Release, But Were Not Really Bad, Count: 35

The Clash / Cut the Crap: ok, it's not a very good album. actually, it's pretty lame compared to the previous work of the clash. but there are so many people pretending as if this album doesn't even exist and no, it's NOT that bad. at least it has "this is england" and i think it's not only one of the best songs by the clash, but one of the best ever.

The Cure / The Top: 3x the cure on a list like this may seem like a joke, but "the top" was yet another cure album to be critically bashed. it's still overshadowed by the more famous the cure albums, but it's also a fan favourite, just like "mixed up" and "pornography". i personally like it a lot. with songs like "shake dog shake", "birdmad girl", "piggy in the mirror", "bananafishbones", the title track and of course "the caterpillar", "the top" is a perfect experimental pop album. it was generally criticized for being too weird, but that's where the charm of "the top" lies.

Weezer - Pinkerton: i guess "pinkerton" is the most famous example of an album being critically bashed first, but hailed as a masterpiece later. the reviews were pretty harsh, the sales were bad and it was chosen as the second WORST album of 1996 by rolling stone readers. after the critical and commercial failure, even the band disowned the album. however, "pinkerton" was another fan favourite and word of mouth changed everything within 5-6 years. later, most of the magazines gave it a new review, crowned it with 5 stars mostly and included it in many "best of..." lists. the odd thing is; 10 years ago "pinkerton" was THE underrated album, now some think it's overrated. LOL

  • yup, terrible ranking

    don't ask me. ask
  • The 2006 one is worse, really.
(Guess we can be glad MCR and Panic!... aren't British, else they'd have probably put them at #1 and #2.)

  • those two lists make me miss MM even more...
