what's so baroque about Pet Sounds?
and i seriously doubt Modest Mouse shaped Indie Rock. a bit late i'd say.

    don't ask me. ask
  • and Graceland, Pop?? if someone in the 80s was Pop then it was Madonna, Michael Jackson or Prince.

    don't ask me. ask
  • i dont think this list is about originators, i think it is more a list of good examples of the genres. but i still think there is a lot of room for argument.

    stab me 'til i cum

Black Metal isnt Black Metal. Black metal is a Moterhead clone album.
(ive not said that in about 3months - maybe a record)

Venom in general isn't really black metal, but they did define the future sound, imo.

maybe. id say Bathory is a Black Metal clone

Agree, it's not about who was first, but about albums that could define what the genre was about at the given time, or what it would be like. Which albums that was important can be argued over I guess.

If you look at it though, many indie rock bands has created a similar sound to that of Modest Mouse since that time, so the question is, did it bring something new, or was the sound they brought already well developed?

ok i see your point. still graceland is not pop. we should replace that. wasn't it famous for being influenced by african music (though there are still a lot of better examples, but that's just me). but i got no idea how to call it.

i think they deserve to be in there, since they are, imo, one of indie rocks innovators of today.

can someone explain some terms to me. like Baroque Pop, Artwave (i know which kind of bands are in the desk, but why Artwave?) and the mysterious Bossa Britpop (haha)?

    don't ask me. ask
  • Artwave = Artificial attempt at cashing in on the hype around the movie about a dead New Wave singer.

in b4 "JD wasn't New Wave"

  • Sorry I dunno if this is the right help desk so call me an idiot and send me somewhere else if it is wrong but I really really like Give it Back! by The Brian Jonestown Massacre and I want to find albums like it. Any suggestions?

  • thanks for that. I'll check out one of those avenue's. I just wasn't sure if my question fir into this helpdesk or artist helpdesk, but I might even try shoutbox service

  • Maybe something mixing world music with electronic(a) should be here? Think Karsh Kale, Max Pashm (something I recently picked up at the CD store, see here), DJ Cheb I Sabbah.
Kale's Realize might be a good option?

Apart from quoting wikipedia:Musically, the group is influenced by trip hop, ambient music, and French electronic groups such as Air. However the lyrics to these lush and romantic melodies are frequently bleak, ironic or sarcastic: obvious influences are Ray Davies, Morrissey, and Pulp. I can't help much, I'm afraid.

I wonder, what would the white stripes fall under? I've seen things like garage rock revival, but I don't have any knowledge of garage rock. Perhaps a recommendation in that direction would be nice:).

Black Metal isnt Black Metal. Black metal is a Moterhead clone album.
(ive not said that in about 3months - maybe a record)

Venom in general isn't really black metal, but they did define the future sound, imo.

Venom is speed metal, but their album Black Metal is a landmark record and basically created the whole extreme metal scene. Plus their "satanic" image played a big role too I guess.

Alright, I'm back, and I have yet another electronic music request:
    I'm looking for drum-based electronic--heavy, rhythmic, etc.
Also, anything like the first song in the Techno Viking video would be great.
