Check out Aurora Borealis and Unquintessence. They might be what you're looking for. The first is more of a blackened death feel. But like I said in the last thread I'm no expert on BM :P.

  • If you like Sons of Northern Darkness you should like Naglfar. Im no expert on them but I think they sound pretty similar.

  • posh!

Btw - Naglfar and Immortal sounding similar? :O kekek
Btw2 - Only LP's should be added, rite? Just wanna clear that up.
Btw3 - Are we talking here about black metal in it's broad sense? I guess we are, since i can see Solefald, Venom (? O_o) and Enslaved's "Isa" ;e anyway, \m/
Btw4 - Venom O_o i know it was fundamental to the creation of black metal as a genre, but that band was never BM per se. Should it really be on this list?

@M-M: Dude, if you wanna BM that's fast and furious, check out Anaal Nathrakh. It's bordering on Grindcore, lol. ;d I especially recommend their latest release, "Eschaton". It owns little teddybears.

I included Venom pretty much first up, on the bias of their influence on latter bands. So blame me!

  • The Second Wave:

Akercocke - The Goat of Mendes (2001)
Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro (2001)
December Wolves - Blasterpiece Theatre (2003)

[a quick guide to great black metal albums u discovered when i read kerrang, haha, true]
and fuck u guys, im addin a cradle cd next... true.

  • and hows about we compile a definative top 20 black metal demos?
    yeah, good idea.

    stab me 'til i cum
  • Woot! You read my mind, mate. How do we do this demos list thingy?

And just for the record - CoF is NOT black metal, it's gothic metal. Sheesh. :P And i'm having doubts about Akercocke, they're more death than black, really.

    Anyway:

Akercocke - The Goat of Mendes (2001)
Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro (2001)
    Arkona - Imperium (1996)
December Wolves - Blasterpiece Theatre (2003)
    Drudkh - Autumn Aurora (2004)
Sort Vokter - Folkloric Necro Metal (1996)

  • ssssh, yeah i know. i went from eminem to red hot chillies to limp bizcuit to akercocke it the space af a week, and i thought it was BM then, and still think it is in a way - what other death stuff has all that spooky evil shit going on?
as i said, i learned of all those bands from kerrang, a mr dom lawson to be exact, who was singer with the short lived but brilliant 'nu-death' band Matter. he is a great singer, like noone els, really. last i heard the record lable were getting rid of their only cd for 1 pound [last january].

and f u mate, cradle obviously were a black metal band, and up until midian were really quite good too [bitter suites is good too, but i dont count it]

I have to agree with madbringer on this, CoF is gothic, heavy/black if you will...and most people who want to classify CoF as BM, I can live with that 'name'. Dani has always distanced his band from the black metal scene, as their intentions were to never make music that even resemblanced to BM - and thats what they did. From The Principle to...whatever album they released recently...it never came even close to BM...

  • ok, lets leave it at that.

    stab me 'til i cum
  • Just sayin' - i dont like CoF much myself, but i wont go around and diss their music. I didnt wanna be aggrievin' your style dude, just point out they dont fit on the list. :P

Oh, and a few other very fast BM bands -

    Reign Of Erebus
    Infernal War
    Kriegsmaschine
    Vesania
    Setherial
    Kult ov Azazel

with Reign of Erebus and Setherial coming closest (RoE even topping it, imo) to 1349's speed.

    Cheers.

MAC Album of the Day, 11th March 2007:

Secret Snacker & Accomplished Pen Thief At:
  • Bathory - Bathory
    Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therium

  • From Norway, anno 1994, Bergtatt :

I've just recommended the newer creations of Ulver at the ambient Electronics desk but they started out as a Black Metal band.
    Bergtatt is thier debut:
Chanting, clear singing and harsh vocals. Folk music, acustic guitars, flute, droning riffs. The drums are rarely accentuated which creates a flow-together feel.
A really good black metal album, not a bit monochrome, a real gem.
