Well, the Mesmerize cover reminds me that I have a nu-metal question running around in the back of my mind ...

I don't really like System of a Down or most of the nu-metal I've heard, but I really, really love the song "Radio/Video". It's almost like a "Weird Al" Yankovich song or something, it's just a perfect comedy pop song to me.

Are there any nu-metal bands that focus on only making that kind of song? I guess I'm looking for a band that is to nu-metal what Primus is to alt-rock or GWAR is to metal.

  • need help with finding new bands.

basically i want ones in these categories

    =Like S.O.A.D
    =Like Deadstar Assembly
    =Like Static X

This desk is almost only around System Of A Down, I've listened a lot of Nu Metal but I haven't found anything similar to them, They are so different from the standar Nu Metal Act that I decided to change their genre from Nu Metal to Alternative Metal in my music library.

    Sorry I can't help.

  • I honestly don't like System of a Down. There are very few bands that I actually dislike, but they are one of them. I am open to new genres. What is a good Nu-metal album that kind of defines the genre, but doesn't sound like System? Is there such an album?

An album that I consider that has many standard Nu Metal elements is Welcome By Taproot, but I recommend others that probably don't have that homegenized sound but I like them more, maybe that's why I like them :)

I prefer a more emoish and Industrial kind of nu metal, some Nu Metal that I highly recommend:

    Strictly Diesel by Spineshank

My all time favorite album, It has the higest rating in my library of many many albums, I really don't know why I like it so much, the mixture of emotional vocals, nu metal sound and some industrial elements is like the perfect music for me.They even have a beatles cover in this album :)

Bitterness the Star by 36 Crazyfists

Really great!, emoish vocals Nu Metal.

    Untitled By Five Pointe O

The only album from this short lived project, It has some experimental sounds and Death Metal and emotional vocals mixed in some songs.

    Adrenaline By Deftones

What can I say..., A Classic in Nu Metal.

Invitation to the Dance By 40 Below Summer

    Very dynamic album, really awesome.

    New Killer America By Skrape

Industrial Nu Metal, the vocals are a bit difficult to listen, but once you do it you will love them.

    Progress By Ultraspank

    Industrial Nu Metal. Great Album!.

    Subject to Change By Switched

Very traditional Nu Metal, but it has something that make it stand out of the others traditional acts.

    Mankind By Factory 81

    Rapcore Deftones influenced Nu Metal.

:O I'm supposed to be working!!, I hope you find it useful.

  • Thanks...I think I'll listen to Taproot just to help myself to understand what Nu-Metal is. I can't read about music genres. I have to hear them. I'll give 36 Crazyfists a try b/c I might actually like them. Thanks again. That was a great reply with so many recommendations. =)

    no problem :)

ok I listened a couple of songs of that album and I'm thinking again about if it really represents Nu Metal, but this song I think that really does, take a look at the poem video by taproot -->

  • nu? new? emu?

not liking system IS the end of the world.

i always thought taproot sucked, tho i liked a single, was it called wish? it had a lyric "smash the glass" in the chorusy bit. and saw them once and thought they were pretty good/noisey. plus the dude had a cordless mic, he crowd-surfed off of a massive specker stack, went to the toilet and took a piss wilst singing and had a wee strole around the balcony section bit.. all-together very flashy. his name is steven richards, after a guy outa the wwf.

    DontLetsStart
maybe u should check out Dog Fashion Disco, a really great band, really great, id rec Anarchists of Good Taste to u for now, even tho their last cd, Adultery, is their best.

    nu metal pick
American Head Charge - The War Of Art (2001)

one of my favs. produced by the ledgendary public enemy, slayer, er, system knob-head ricky rubin. very bungley, very perverted, very good.

other than that, the slipkont cds are great, all of them.

I'll suppose that was a typo, but you can't believe how funny slipkont sounds in Dutch.

Why does everyone think SOAD are nu metal? I was convinced that nu metal was metal with rap elements. (You know, like the Anthrax-Public Enemy collaboration) Never found those in SOAD songs. (there are other groups that are mistakenly called nu metal in my opinion. Korn for instance would classify industrial metal in my book)
I mean, if you say nu metal, I think Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Disturbed (uck),... But I'm sorry, SOAD doesn't sound like any of those.

  • SOAD cover a ODB song. and surely some of it is considered rap/rapping.

  • korn industrial?
i think the phrase nu metal also kinda just ment 'new' metal. what they did to 'old' metal is similar to what they did to the word 'new' i suppose.

  • I have been to a French nu metal concert at Sziget Festival. They band is called Pleymo.
    Try them!

    Today's Lyrics...

    .
    Slipknot - Eyeless

Insane - am I the only motherfucker with a brain?
I'm hearing voiced but all they do is complain
How many times have you ever wanted to kill
Everything and everyone - say you'll do it but never will

You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes

    I am my father's son
Cuz he's a phantom, a mystery and that leaves me nothing!
How many times have you wanted to die?
It's too late for me - all you have to do is get rid of me

    It's all in your head
    I'ts all in my head
    It's all in your head

It tried - you lied to me for so long
Everywhere I go, there's a sense of it
Freak on my antics and give me a choice
Doesn't matter if I give a shit - it's shit that you gave me

Do you wanna feel pain? Takin' my name in vain
Caring never felt so lame inside
Anybody else got pride? Do you wanna take my life?
    Maybe I'll reverse my ride
Who the fuck are you? Fuck you!
Better suck it up 'cause you bled through
    Better get away from me
Stay the fuck away from me

    I feel safe - seems you're saved

Look me in my brand new eye

First of all, System of a Down is NOT nu metal!

The only nu element they use is downtuned guitars ... as for other common mallcore aspects, System has barely none. I would categorize them as or . It is true that System created two songs which contained rap, but fact is that these were merily tributes and were never even released on their albums. As a matter of fact, Daron Malakian (guitarist) once stopped playing one of the songs live and said "fuck this shit, we're not rappers".
When I'm talking about nu metal, I talk about early Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit, etcetera. Compare these bands to System of a Down and you will find almost none (if in fact, none) similar sounds/lyrics. Somehow people started calling them nu because they started playing music when Korn and other nu metal acts were becoming popular. But they aren't.

Second, Static-X isn't nu metal either, it's . I don't really think it needs any explanation ... no rap, just hard rock with industrial elements (latest album is a tad more heavier, thus the label of industrial metal).

Third, I don't have anything against nu metal (note a few nu artists in my top 50). The thing is that I like to listen and sing with these bands, but I'd never support them or have alot of respect for what they create. The music if fun, but that's where it ends. I get annoyed when somebody mis-uses the tag though.

Questions or more info about what I said or the bands in my sig, feel free to ask !
