The Atomic Bitchwax - atomic bitchwax (1999)

    09/10
humungus sabbath stylee riffs and a clutchish funk edge. ive waited ages to get this, and its better than i could have hoped. seriously, if this didnt have someof the spacey bits, it could have been a 10/10, not that they are bad, it just could have been a non stop stoner rock masterclass. well thats what happens when u jam for 6 years. i doubt atomic bitchwax2 could come close to this.

  • The only band I can think of in this sub genre, is Kyuss (and a few others worth noting) =[ I need to broaden my 'stoner rock' collection.

  • Acid Bath only ever recorded 2 albums i think, but they have songs that would cover most of the stoner/sludge/groove spectrum in one hit :) . Dredged out of the swamps of Louisiana, and sound the part :)

@friendlysnare - have a listen to Spine of God, or any of their other earlier stuff. Also Orange Goblin or High On Fire I'd recommend for more stoner rock sounds in Kyuss's ballpark.

Stoner Rockers, also check the brand (spanking) new Garage Rock Desk.

It's a mystery how MAC's gone 7 months without mention of The Hellacopters.

Yeah, only two albums (and one demos album) because of a death in the band, but they made some great sludge!

Anyway, two of their tracks are full stream on last.fm

  • A Question

What is Stoner Rock ??(Noisy Psychedelic Music?)

Would these albums fall in the above category?

I'm lazy, so I will copy definition from Wikipedia:
Stoner rock and stoner metal are interchangeable terms describing sub-genres of rock and metal music. Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo, with a low-tuned, bass-heavy sound and psychedelic jams. It is riff-oriented and often contains significant repetition with variation. Melodic vocals and 'raw' or 'retro' production are also common traits.
    ...what is pretty right.
Some key bands of this style include Kyuss, Down, Clutch, Monster Magnet, some Melvins, Electric Wizard and so on.
Black Sabbath has a lot of influence on the genre.
Soundgarden are pretty similar to stoner rock as well.
Related genres are psychedelic rock, doom metal, blues rock, etc.

I haven't heard mentioned albums, but as far as I remember Mainliner is some kind of crazy and loud noise rock.

  • dont know the first one, but id allow the second, tho first off id call it psychedelic noise-rock.

The Atomic Bitchwax - The Atomic Bitchwax (1999)
    Clutch - Jam Room (2000)
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (1994)
Om - Conference of the Birds (2006)
Place of Skulls - With Vision (2003)
    Sleep - Dopesmoker (2003)

...genius! - i was about to change the 'rock' in the title to 'rock/metal', but u left taht out completey. ive been thinking of requesting the 'psychedelic rock' desk be changed to just 'psychedelic', but was a bit worried that would open the door to electronica and such - i suppose it wouldnt be that bad.

  • i always think of stoner rock as having (heavy) riffs that twirl round in circles. tho usually the main "twirly" part isnt so heavy, so to speak, and, as defined by Jimi Hendrix and perpetuated by the likes of Joshua Holme, is played like halfway doen the fretbord on the higher strings.

"dangwn, dingg, dingn da dagwn dawwn" and so on (or not at all).

  • stoner

its funny, before idid anything, i had a tag for stoner, i assumed everyone did, it was third, after rock and metal.
