Because it really is too quiet at this desk I made a 'little' mix. As a matter of fact, since it isn't abnormal to have boxes with three or four cd's in the trance genre, I thought I'd make a triple mix. All good things come in three parts, you know.
(actually, I had a hard time choosing and even now I'm still unsatisfied, there's so many great tracks out there. Ah well, we'll see what the future holds.)
This mix contains some trance, hardtrance and progressive trance.(and melodic trance and uplifting trance, but I dislike these two last names. I think melody is quite an essential part to trance and I've never seen the point of the genre-term uplifting or euphoric) No goa trance/psytrance though.

    07. Paragliders - Oasis
    08. Jones & Stephenson - The Second Rebirth
    09. Bedrock - Heaven Scent

    Pick of the Week

    Retrofuturism (2005)

The second album of criminally overlooked psytrance artist Benza. His debut (Benza) is nearly impossible to find.
With psytrance/goa trance at the top of it's popularity in the western world in 2004-2005 the genre, like any popular genre, had fallen prey to countless releases of lesser quality, mostly on compilation cd's, as is typical for the trance genre. Between all the junk however Benza's genious shines only brighter. A cd that qualifies well as background music, but can also really be listened to, over and over again. You'll keep discovering new layers in the music.

    Choice cuts:
    Isis And Osiris
    The Ascension Of Smeagol
    The Twin Complex Of Dawn

    My pick of the week:

    Acid Phaze (1994)

As the title suggests, an acid track, but to be more precise this is where acid becomes trance. The death of one genre and the birth of another.

    Pick of the Week:

    The House of House

Cherrymoon Trax' first track and instant club hit has been remixed quite a few times through the years, as it does tend to happen with trance anthems like this. Last year saw the release of a triple vinyl gathering some of the best remixes of this simply fantastic piece of hardtrance. 5 mixes alongside the original version of The House of House and the original version of another Cherrymoon anthem, Let There Be House. Collectors, don't miss it.

Does psytrance stuff, like Infected Mushroom go here? If so, I would like to express my love for Texas Faggott, which is one of those rare groups that I only really noticed because of the odd name, and which I then completely fell in love with once I got a hold of their music. I believe they have a large amounts of tracks which are free to download on their home page, which is ultimately the only place I could ever find their music that didn't involve importing it from somewhere.

If someone happens to know of similar groups, I would be happy to expand my rather thin knowledge of electronic music with any suggestions.

I'll have to check out Texas Faggott.

Dark Nebula are a decent psytrance band, try "The 8th Sphere" (2003) or "Dreamfuel" (2006).

@ xx_maldita_xx, we've just opened an Ibiza Desk, which may be worth checking.

Well, that's tough, or at least, it needs a double answer.
Generally, Eyal Barkan and Yahel mostly psytrance artist, which means recommended others are: Infected Mushroom, (from here one the recs are also pointed at alholm), Astral Projection, Benza, Paranormal Attack, Astrix, GMS and Skazi. Skazi is a bit harder than the others, but does lean in quite closely with Texas Faggott, which is extraordinary too. Skazi's the elast melodic out of the bucnh.

Should you however refer to the track Voyage or one of it's remixes then you're probably looking for a more European type of trance, third renaissance style. Recommended artist: Tiësto (commercial, but album tracks are often good, mostly the non-vocal ones), Clockx, Solid Globe, Tranceball, Armin Van Buuren, Driftwood, Paul van Dyk.

I'll admit most of these aren't really up my alley. They're okay, but a bit too uninspired for my tastes, but that's because I'm largely a 90s trance man. Lots of this stuff really is good, but the genre needs some surprises, like psytrance has. Solid Globe and especially Tranceball do a very good job though.

  • thanks. Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection are on my hitlist..will let you know soon.

Various - Sounds of Sanity (2006)

I prefer trance compilations to artists studio albums (well, more often than not).

The tracks assembled here are tailor-made for a quality party, psy-trance to acid house, plenty of twists and turns.

    Serve chilled.

Trance mostly is a compilation genre, just like most genres of the house spectrum. Doesn't mean there aren't any great trance albums (especially psytrance has several good ones, for some reason psytrance also has more albums than the more 'western' trance/progressive trance.), just that you're probably better off buying yourself a couple of Bonzai Records cd's 8]

  • @TowerU

I heard quite a few recommendations you had posted up here..though never got hold of the albums.

So, this is what I've liked :

Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, Albert Vorne(Formentera What remixes), Goa Gil(very curious to listen more of this), Armin Van Buuren, Xerox.

Tiesto, Oakenfold played some average stuff.

    What comes next?

Beyond stuff like Armin Van Buuren, Tiësto and Oakenfold there's among other well-known stuff:

    Sander van Doorn
    The Thrillseekers
    Ferry Corsten
    Nightvision
    Opus III
    Perpetuous Dreamer
    Sander Kleinenberg
    Solar Stone
Dave Davis (Older style of trance. Better imo)

And I'll say it again, if you manage to get hold of some 90's Bonzai Records compilations then you probably got some really nice progressive/euphoric/melodic trance and hardtrance/hardstyle.
